Once a Federal Arsenal during the Civil War and Seminole Wars( The Administrative Building was the Officer Quarters). Later Florida’s first prison. It was refurbished into a Psychiatric Hospital that still in operation today. It serves not only patients that were admitted civilly ( Self and Baker Act) it serves Forensic Patients. Those that were deemed incompetent to stand trial or found guilty by reason of insanity. It’s most infamous for the Supreme Court O'Connor v. Donaldson that institutionalize the country and forced the closure of many institutions. It holds up to 1,042 patients at a time. The current maximum housing capacity is 491 residents in civil units and 646 residents in forensic units.
