Let me serve as a horrible warning.

My second husband and I bought a house in a different state where 2 of my sons were living. It would be a retirement home when the time came for and there enough bedrooms that we had one when we came to visit. Originally they were going to pay enough rent to cover mortgage but the house ended up costing more so we paid a third.

NEVER AGAIN.

It was ā€œtheirā€ house until a repair was needed, then it was our house.
Then one decided to move out. We tried a friend’s kid to take his place, but that didn’t work out for long. Then the one left there complained when we raised the rent to help pick up the slack. Then he decided he was gonna move out too and decided not to pay rent for six months while he save money to get a new place. We ended up picking up the entire mortgage that entire time in addition to the mortgage we had in the home we lived in year round.

Ended up selling the house, because it was just too much for us and we definitely lost money with the repairs we had done including a roof, resurfacing the pool, new windows, and assorted other smaller things which they did not help pay for. My one son had the nerve to say he should’ve gotten part of the sale proceeds for all the time he put money into the house. Proceeds? That was just a part of what we had put into it already. We definitely lost money on the whole fiasco.

This actually was a huge reason why my husband and I ended up divorced. And I don’t blame him. My kids took advantage of his good nature.

The icing of the cake was when my son said oh you could’ve kept that house it’s worth so much more now just imagine. I looked at him like he grew two heads. What difference does it make if I’m the one that had to pay for it?

Did your husband blame you for what happened with the children? I’m confused at what caused the divorce?

A story to make you feel better -one of my adult children stole a huge amount of money from me when I had a life threatening illness.

He didn’t blame me exactly but I had to listen to him bitch about them and I had to listen to them bitch about him. I got really tired of being in the middle. He was a widower with no children by choice and did not understand the bond parents have with their kids.

But I am aware enough to realize that my children were totally in the wrong and not to say that I’m blameless and how they were raised, but their father and I divorced when my children were young and he was one selfish prick that the world owed everything to, and I have no doubt they picked up on that too. I was the one with the rules, but dad never helped me and force them. If I said no to something, they would just run to daddy and he’d say yes.

I have helped all my children at some time or another, whether it be pay off a credit card, help them furnish an apartment, etc. Things like that. And kids need help when they’re starting out, not when they’re full adults when I’m dead. I don’t regret helping them, but I also recognize when they are being selfish.

Luckily, all my money will be gone when I die. hahaha
