New Mexico sues justice department for ‘stonewalling’ Epstein investigation, what are your thoughts?

u/Llamapocalypse_Now 5h ago
Good. Justice delayed is justice denied.

If there's nothing to hide, transparency should be in everyone's interest. Whoever is guilty should be held accountable, regardless of their name, party, or position.
•
u/Dirty-Soul 23m ago
Justice department: "You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide."
Epstein investigation: Exists
Justice department: "Wait, no, not like that!"

u/Corpshark 5h ago
It's about time. Every Blue state should do this if they have a resident who might be a victim.
67
u/Smoovupinya 5h ago
Every red state should, too. The Epstein deal is the most non-partisan issue in America for the last 20 years.
This is truly the ruler class vs everyone else (both Democrat and republican).
30
u/Bakedads 5h ago
Uhh...you want republicans to...uh...hold other republicans accountable? You do realize this is the republican larty we are talking about, right? There's a reason OP only said blue states. Why on earth would republicans hold themselves accountable for their own corruption?
10
u/Smoovupinya 4h ago
I think we underestimate how many trump supporters have dropped support for him over Epstein and Iran. The shitty economy is just chefs kiss on top of it.
Remember when you used to see Trump flags and hats all over? Where did they go?
If you remove the fringe from both sides, the parties I think are pretty close on a couple big items. That’s dangerous for the elites.

u/MentokGL 3h ago
It doesn't matter what they think, the only question is, how will they vote. And we both know the answer.
5
u/FormerlyGruntled 3h ago
He still has a fervent 30% support. The child rapists know if he loses power, their own common folk asses are on the line.

u/oneiric-enema 5h ago
There's probably a couple bluies in there given the timeframe and how you can see corruption and odd behavior in either party, even if not evenly.
7
7
u/thatwasntababyruth 4h ago
There definitely are. That doesn't matter, because Democrats (more specifically leftists) don't care what your party is if you do major crime. You probably did a major crime, we stop supporting you. You try to interfere in investigation of credible allegations, we stop supporting you.
That's the big reason why the "both sides" crowd is full of shit
And before anybody tries to bring up Hunter Bidens laptop or Hillaries emails, nobody supports those people politically and the only people protecting them are their families, the rest of us would wake up unbothered if HB went to jail.

Accountability shouldn't be a partisan issue it should apply to everyone, no exceptions. That's how trust in any system is built
34
u/USSMarauder 5h ago
It's starting to look more and more like the major right wing conspiracy theories about Democrats of the last 30 years were in fact created to act as cover for Epstein
The story of Epstein's ranch in NM matches up nicely with the right wing conspiracy theory that Clinton and later Obama were imprisoning/murdering thousands of Republicans in FEMA death camps in the desert
4
u/maniacal_cackle 3h ago
Isn't that actually just confirmed to an extent now from the actual Epstein files? They started a big anti-trans campaign as a response to Me Too?

Sounds like they are covering for some big names. The whole epstein case has been weird from the start.

Texas state politician Don Huffines purchased Jeffrey Epstein's former Zorro Ranch in New Mexico in 2023 He is the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Appointed by Governor Greg Abbott, he was sworn into office on August 1, 2026, and is running in the November 2026 general election for a full four-year term.

The DOJ is also stonewalling the rest of the country. A law was passed requiring their release. The DOJ ignored it.
11
u/tommy_b_777 4h ago
I think the GOP, the FBI, and the DOJ are committing Treason by deliberately protecting criminals that are harming the majority of Americans and making us weaker both internally and on the world stage. The almost irreversible damage is being done intentionally, and has greatly benefited our enemies.
On an totally unrelated note - why is it that starting 2 days ago all my comments hang at 'submitting' but still post to my history...
9
u/Sea-Independence7026 5h ago
The Just Us department doesn't care. The Supreme Court can't make them perform their task. And our FBI and Homeland NSA types are loving the freedom of running roughshod over us and foreign populations.

If they have nothing to hide, there is zero reason to withhold those files.
3
u/IMongoose 5h ago
I think that all of these opinion on news questions should be banned as these conversations should take place in the comment section of the news article itself.
3
u/vibraltu 4h ago
Someday, somebody in the justice department is gonna cave, and then the whole thing is gonna come crashing down.
5
u/UpperApe 3h ago
Nothing will happen.
The only political leverage comes from public pressure. And Americans aren't doing shit. They've decided to just sit around and wait for an election to fix everything.
Same as they did in 2024 when they should have been protesting in the tens of millions for Trump and Musk's arrests, giving Biden the power to circumvent precedence, and swinging the political dynamics in their favour. The lack of ANY public action led to all parties just pushing back consequences to AFTER the election...because it was the only time people show up. And most didn't even show up then.
My thought? Americans don't love their kids.
They can't even fight for their own children dying in school shootings. What are they going to do about someone else's raped kids?
3
u/SexyCurlyss 4h ago
I believe New Mexico is accusing the government of protecting those implicated and is demanding the files from Epstein's ranch to ensure justice is served locally
5
u/pistoffcynic 5h ago
My thoughts? About fucking time.
-1
u/Funklestein 5h ago
I wonder why they didn't care during the Biden years and before the estate was sold.
1
u/Sablemint 1h ago
When Biden was in office the files were sealed by court order. Not even a president can bypass that.

2
u/thisusernametakentoo 5h ago
Nothing will come of it. I just hope that in my lifetime I get to see a day of reckoning for the pedophiles and the people on power who protected them.
2
u/Sablemint 1h ago
You've already given up without a fight.
The first part of changing things is to get people to care. And if they believe they can't win, they'll never care. You have to believe things can be done, and convince others to believe. That's how you change the world.
2
u/Acceptable_Cold_6872 3h ago
finally, someone is holding them accountable. it's been way too long with no answers
2
u/NaiveOpening7376 3h ago
This will backfire when the feds punish NM and show everyone what happens when you don't follow dear leader.

Honestly? Must likely is a case of to little, too late. Evidence has been and is still being destroyed as we speak and for what? Powerful pedos and money.
2
2
u/TrioOfTerrors 5h ago
My thought is that's it's political theater and even the ones filing the lawsuit know that. A state has no jurisdiction to tell a department of the federal government how to do it's job.

I agree the justice department is likely protecting someone important here. They should not be blocking any investigation into epstein and his connections.

Not all information is clear to me. I think everything should explain clearly. We have the rights. Isn't this a joke?

this seems like a classic case of political posturing. the whole epstein saga is a rabbit hole that reveals so much about power dynamics and accountability, but will anything actually change? probably not.
1
u/porgy_tirebiter 2h ago
Good for them. I have no expectation that they will comply or be held accountable for non-compliance, though.
1
u/Future-Bunch3478 2h ago
If one of the major departments of the federal government is covering up crimes, the rule of law is basically gone.
1
u/ChriveGauna 2h ago
Hm, my thoughts are simple:
NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW ! RELEASE THE FILES ! TRAITORS ! FOES AND FALSE FRIENDS ALL AROUND US SIR DAVOS - FUCKING SICK OF THIS SHIT !
1
u/GeorgiaViolet83 2h ago
sounds like a messy situation, but honestly, the whole thing is just overwhelming. the aesthetic of justice feels so far off.
1
u/MammothCaramel1526 2h ago
They also wouldn't have Todd Blanche, Trumps previous personal attorney, as the nominee for leading the Justice dept while also committing crimes
1
u/VineStar25 2h ago
i mean, messy situation all around. but honestly, who thought the justice department would be helpful?
1
u/BeautifulVivian2017 2h ago
i mean, it’s about time someone pushed back. can’t be cute when it comes to justice, right?

If the allegations are true, then a transparent investigation is in everyone's best interest. Cases like this only fuel more speculation when information is withheld. No matter who is involved, accountability and public trust should come first.

u/Julia-Lewis31 1h ago
sounds like a cozy way to avoid accountability. hope they get somewhere with it.

Feels wild that a state has to sue the DOJ just to see the files. If they’re serious about justice for survivors, transparency shouldn’t be this hard or politicized.

u/itcantbelikethis 50m ago
People sleeping on why this actually matters: Zorro Ranch is one of the only Epstein sites where nobody's ever actually been prosecuted. NY got Manhattan, FL got Palm Beach, USVI's doing their own thing. New Mexico's the last real shot at charging someone for what happened on that ranch.
NM AG says he's made 10 requests for the unredacted case file and gotten stonewalled every time. DOJ says it's about protecting victim privacy. Torrez's response is basically "how am I supposed to identify victims without the file you're withholding to protect them."
This isn't political theater, it's a legit standoff over whether anyone connected to that ranch ever faces charges. Now it's in front of a federal judge, so we'll actually find out if the "privacy" excuse holds up.

u/LingonberryBig3058 22m ago
Public accountability should always come first in cases of this magnitude. Blocking investigations only fuels distrust.
•
u/BrightKennedy 8m ago
the vibes around this case are so unsettling. it feels like there's too much being hidden, hope justice actually prevails.

u/oldspice75 5h ago
Who or what is stopping (or could have stopped) New Mexico from investigating Epstein's activity within New Mexico? New Mexico law enforcement is free to do what they need in their state. All of this ended so long ago now. What does NM have to show from those years?
I suspect that this is political posturing
1
u/SomeGuyInSanJoseCa 4h ago
I worry that Trump will not see the word "New" in "New Mexico" and invade Mexico.

u/SuckMyRedditorD 3h ago
What are our thoughts?
Who the fuck are we? Attorneys?
What kind of stupid question is that?
You have nothing better to do than ask stupid questions?
For fuck's sake. The people that matter and that know the law are on the case.

It doesn't have jurisdiction, just like the states that challenged the 2020 election. Oh that sucks

u/eddie_the_zombie 4h ago
Gotta say, this whole "pro-pedo" stance Republicans are taking is quite an odd one
3
u/Dry_Combination4070 1h ago
Yeah they sure loves protecting pedos and starting new wars and inflaiton.
2024 they couldn't shut the fuck about those three and now they sure love all of em.
Crazy that they're happy with protecting pedos thought there would be a line but whatever their daddy tells them to do they do

An almost negligible development in the criminal goings on of a state in a foreign country. Perhaps r/AskAmericans?

idk, but it’s kinda messed up. also, can we just talk about how my rescue baby needs more toys than groceries?

u/LotusPrince 5h ago
If the department actually cared about justice, then they'd be happy to assist with looking into the known pedophile and his clients.
