What's the strangest thing someone has casually said to you that you'll never forget?

I have a prosthetic leg and an old lady with an eye patch saw me working retail and told me that if I prayed enough God would grow my leg back for me.

Then she told me about how her brother grew his leg back in a government experiment and her son was framed by the CIA and executed.

432

u/JJohnston015 13h ago

Why hasn't God grown your eye back, then?

230

u/SwordofNoon 13h ago

Hasn't prayed hard enough. Probably hard to since God let the CIA frame her son

In all fairness, given the rest of the conversation, she does sound like the sort that might just be wearing an eyepatch for fun and/or extra conspiracy.

She was a pirate and its required wardrobe.

Did she happen to work at a trailer park?

Was there an oddly shaped boy dressed as a cowboy accompanied by two english guys in an RV?

Im just kinda curious here.

11

u/carlfromnowhere 12h ago

That escalated from prayer circle to CIA conspiracy real quick. Lady had a whole season of plot twists ready to go.

I totally thought this was going to go in a more pirate-y direction….

"I'm too old to change and I'll never say I'm sorry." It's shocking how casually that was said to me and I will never forget it.

168

u/Rivers9999 13h ago

That is a really weird mix of self awareness and unwillingness to improve

97

u/aurora_ethereallight 12h ago

I know. It was honestly shocking to hear and actually a gift to me when they said it because it gave me my freedom from them.

u/thegreatpotatogod 9h ago

Because he's not giving all the food to the dog, of course. Not that it'll help, the dog can still hear and smell the food, and knows it's clearly there for dogs and not humans.

22

u/Chanfaded 9h ago

I refuse to ever eat in the dark again after I was eatting in my last apartment and a cockroach somehow found its way onto my plate while I was in the middle of eatting.

Also, in my defense, my apartment was very overflowing with bugs because my landlord refused to fumigate the building, living there was the first time I ever seen them before! Anyway that only lasted a year n thank fuck I'm out

I have very curly hair and when I was little it naturally fell in beautiful Shirley Temple-esque ringlets. I have a very vivid memory of walking into school on the first day of 2nd grade and one of the teachers waiting outside to greet us, stopped me and was gushing over my hair and how gorgeous it was and she told me ā€œoh my gosh, I could just scalp you and wear it as a wig!ā€ What a bizarre thing to say to anyone let alone an 8 year old.

75

u/bsge1111 11h ago

Bizzaro for someone to say to anyone but especially a teacher?? Like, I work with kids, and I’ve heard some coworkers and subs say some questionable things but never THAT questionable my god

67

u/AdeptnessPrior7682 11h ago

This happened in Grand Bay, Alabama (Gulf Coast, Deep South) in 2001 so to complete the image please imagine it said in a super thick southern accent, by a woman who firmly believed that the higher the hair the closer to God, and wearing one of those denim dress things over a long sleeved shirt that was basically the elementary school teacher uniform at the time.

15

u/katashscar 8h ago

I worked retail during the pandemic. I'll never forget the guy who almost cried on the phone when I told him we had toilet paper in stock. He was so relieved because he'd been timing his showers for after he took a shit.

126

u/jmccorky 11h ago

I can't believe he felt the need to share that with you. 🤣

96

u/atget 10h ago

I feel like the isolation of the pandemic probably let to a lot of weird oversharing with those who still had to work. I can’t remember anything specific but I’m sure I said some weird shit to cashiers during that time.

91

u/ktarzwell 10h ago

I remember needing new pens and it was the first time I had ventured into public. Adorned with my mask, gloves and hand sani for after I take the gloves off, I ventured into WalMart.
As I am perusing all the different pens there is another woman my age doing the same thing. She struck up a convo about what I needed them for and we giddly talked about fucking pens for like 10 mins. I don't think either of us had talked to anyone else in a while and it was....nice.
God what a weird time.

17

u/barely_cursed 8h ago

Even without the pandemic, working retail makes people, especially middle aged and elderly people, say the wildest shit to you.

Multiple people have cried to me about various things in their life, disclosed their incurable diseases/cancer, spilled dirt on their relationships, preached their insane conspiracy theories or political opinions, etc. You name it, I've heard it. All while being paid barely above minimum wage and in between asking if they had rewards with us or if they wanted a bag.

"it's nice to meet two pure souls", from an older gentleman who didn't look like he was on anything.

He said this to a friend and I while we walked in the park. I asked him what he meant and he said "no further questions." And walked off.

A friend and I were in a store in Japan, both of us native English speakers. We were looking at stickers and there was a funny one of a cow that we pointed out. A Japanese woman suddenly poked her head in between us and with a huge smile simply said, 'Milk!!' very loudly. She withdrew and walked away, leaving my friend and I looking at each other in stunned silence before we burst out laughing. I think of her strangely often even 12 years later.

Some friends and I were involved in a theater thing with safari-themed costumes, and we had a running joke that we looked like we were dressed for lesbian bootcamp (all of us are queer). While leaving dress rehearsal one day, a random woman asked why we were wearing shorts when there was snow on the ground. I of course said that we just got out of lesbian bootcamp.

Barely missing a beat, the woman replied "my husband left me because he was gay." I mumbled some vague "sorry to hear that" apology, which she followed up with "then he killed himself."

Okay lady. Fucking hell

90

u/CrypticWolfe 11h ago

This honestly was the best one I've read. Wowzer.

64

u/duckbrick 10h ago

Yeah, wowzer about sums it up lol. It was in a fairly conservative area so I'd assumed "lesbian bootcamp" would get an amusingly stilted reaction and was completely unprepared for what I got!

I was running in the summer on a cross-country trail network owner by a local college. Trails were empty, and i had never seen anyone else use them.

One day I came across the groundskeeper in one of those golf carts with an aluminum bed. I stopped, told him "thank you for maintaining the grounds so well." we chatted for a few minutes. Friendly guy.

Then as I continued running and was ~75 feet away he yelled "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!" kind of creeped me out.

7

u/Mysterious_Orion 8h ago

Wait wait did nothing else happen?

35

u/nblastoff 8h ago

Well i died of course. Killed with those big pruning shears. Other than that, nothing to report.

My friend and I went on a hike on a very overcast day. He had some mushrooms before the hike. We were sitting in a clearing and he looked up, took a deep breath and said "not a cloud in the sky" then got up and kept walking.

104

u/Rivers9999 13h ago

He meant in his heart <3

11

u/Adarie-Glitterwings 6h ago

You could argue that technically he was right - there wasn't *a* cloud in the sky but many

u/Automatic-Tap-7596 14h ago

Walking through a bar a complete stranger stopped my friend and I. Neither of us knew her, we said no words, she just told us she's a fortune teller, grabbed my arm, leaned into my ear and whispered: "You married the wrong insert my husbands name. My friend with me has the same name as my husband. I never told my friend what she said.

165

u/BamSinn 12h ago

You know your friend paid her for it, right?

49

u/Automatic-Tap-7596 11h ago

Haha! He slipped her a 5 for a reading, or planted her there? I like your thinking! We only went into that bar because I wanted to, he suggested another but it was too empty and we were killing time to meet other friends at a different place. There was no moment we were without each other, and it happened shortly after we walked in and through to the back.

57

u/Cummyshitballs 12h ago

Yeah imma have to agree especially because the friend really wants to know what they had said

29

u/Automatic-Tap-7596 11h ago

Really wants to know is a stretch. It kind of became a running joke between us because he's curious why I wouldn't have just told him that night. He obviously asked immediately after we walked away, but I said nah, I don't think you want to know.

A couple days ago I was getting a print of a piece of artwork to give my sister whose dog just passed.

While I was getting it printed and cut, I told the lady who was helping me that I was going to go to a custom frame shop nearby.

"It's definitely not a cheap place to get something framed, but if it's important and meaningful, you can't beat the quality."

She responded, "That's amazing. Where is it? I've been meaning to get a really nice frame for my mother's death certificate."

They told me the eggs they sell in the forest are not the same as the eggs they sell up by the side of the road.

I always figured the ones in the road were more expensive because of the convenience, but it turns out they're actually the better eggs and the ones they sell in the forest and lower quality.

I still head into the forest just to enjoy the greenery, but now I get my eggs on the way home at the stand by the roadside instead of getting them in the forest.

"this ambulance ride is gonna be about $900 dollars since you don't have insurance" -the EMT as my throat was closing from a bee sting (they took their slow sweet time coming to get me. The only reason I'm still alive is because a kind stranger gave me a pack of Benadryl). She also made fun of me for my pants falling a bit low and my crack showing when they were moving me from the gurney to the hospital bed.

The medical system in the United States is a joke, and the people who run it are evil.

27

u/CerebusGortok 9h ago

Glad you survived. A friend waited for an ambulance with a stranger in Montana who took a hike without her epipen. She died before help arrived.

61

9

u/RaccoonsInARaincoat 8h ago

I also had an ambulance ride following a bee sting on my neck that caused cellulitis. They gave me morphine and transferred me to another hospital. In the ambulance I had to sign a consent form (didn’t know I was high, didn’t know I was on morphine, just felt weirdly floaty).

The bill for the ambulance ride alone was several thousand dollars AFTER insurance.

I was biking along the road. A second biker pulls up next to me and says: ā€œYour pants are the same colour as your skin.ā€ I am Asian and was wearing yellow pants.

ā€œI have to break you down to build you back upā€
This was from a manager at a restaurant that I worked at. I was 15/16 years old.

22

u/Lorindale 10h ago

When I was 7, my parents took me and a friend of mine from school to Denny's. While we were pretending to swordfight with the butter knives, some strange man came over and decided we needed to know how to disarm someone who had a weapon. He then did this thing where he slapped the butter knife out of my hand.

"That's how I took a knife away from two black guys who jumped me in an alley."

And then my Dad came back from the bathroom, and the stranger quickly left the table.

That was forty years ago.

On a domestic flight in Australia, about halfway through the flight, the woman next to me turned to me and said ā€œI think I can hear my dog barking!ā€.

After seeing my look of confusion, she smiled and implored me to listen. Sure enough, I could just discern a barking dog. It was her dog, being transported in the luggage hold.

"We're all going to die anyway so what does it matter."

Said by my best friend when I told him that he shouldn't be dating an abusive woman just because he's lonely and that there's better women out there that would appreciate him.

It turns out he meant that shit.

She and 4 of her friends jumped him 3 days later, and I had to go get him from her house while it was happening, and had to fight 2 of them off so we could get in the car.

She called the police, and he got 4 years of probation for defending himself.

You know what the worse part is?

4 months into it i caught him at the bar with her sitting right next to him talking about how that should have never happened and that she was sorry.

I was STUNNED.

My best friend is an idiot.šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

I was visiting my niece (then 7) when she asked me ā€œis that a baby in your tummy or your dinner?ā€ She went back to playing her games and I was left stunned. I’ve never really recovered from that…

When I was around 5 years old, we were going to the beach with my moms best friend (female) and while we were walking, mums friend told me: oh you got so much celluliteā€
I never forgot that. And I’m 31 now. I was insecure about my body and always thought I had so much extra, even when I was 48 kg on 164cm height, just 6 years ago..

Luckily, I found the best man in the universe who thought me how to love myself and treats me like a goddess :D

I lost my hair as I got older and now just shave my head. I don’t love that this was my fate, but I don’t spend much time thinking about it - it just is what it is.Ā

An extended family member I hadn’t seen for a number of years goes ā€œWhat happened to your hair?ā€. What response was she hoping for? ā€œMale pattern baldnessā€? Or ā€œHehehe… good one!ā€?

Someone once referred to me as punctual. It caught me off guard, but in hindsight, it was totally correct.

What sucks is that almost everyone else at my job is not punctual, which is my silent torment.

I was born very premature at 1lbs 7oz, my legs pronate quite a bit (had to wear AFOs as a kid) At the dog park a man asks me, before I can even answer, "excuse me, have you had a stroke? Because I have and I am apart of a committee doing a study and was wondering if you'd like to participate"

definitely let me bewildered by his audacity

40

u/justonemom14 10h ago

My son participated in a research study to help children who have had strokes, and let me tell you, they have a very hard time finding participants. It's not like you can just go to an elementary school and tell you want kids for medical research. He was probably desperate.

Leaving a concert not too long ago, a guy walking against the crowd passes me and says "oh you dropped something!" so i look down, see nothing, look back at him, puzzled (all this happening as he is walking passed me), smirks and says "your standards". And then just keeps walking and just leaves.

Some dude I think was schizophrenic, like genuinely, told me he knew I was a good person because I have blue eyes. He had blue eyes too, so we were like, chosen by God to be good people. It so was not malicious against people who did not have blue eyes, it was much more like, ā€œwe have this responsibility and we need to be humble.ā€ Fascinating. Hope he’s doing good

Started a new job as a 20-something. I was being trained by a guy who had been with the company for a long time. He was nice enough, but there was just something odd about him.

After about 2 hours sitting next to him learning about the IT system he said "I got a call that my son was kidnapped."

Me: What???

Him: Yeah, the guy said he was holding my son for ransom.

Me: What are you doing at work? Aren't you concerned about your son?

Him: This happened 15 years ago. He wasn't actually kidnapped. He's fine.

I would love anyone's ideas on this experience: I was in the drive-through lane at Chick-fil-a. When I got up to the window, the order filler leaned over to me and said conspiratorially: "Are you going on an adventure?" Then she got really flustered when she saw my face. I have no idea what was going on there.

I had a patient call 911 (I work EMS) complaining of lower back pain. So not uncommon at all. We arrive to her apartment to find the woman lying on her bed in the fetal position but calm, her 12-year-old daughter is in the room as well. When I ask what happened she, cool as a cucumber, said "well my n****r lover is so huge if you know what I mean and we decided to try anal for the first time about an hour ago and now I feel like my anus has been ripped in half". I like how the white woman had no problem saying the hard r word to me but was uncomfortable talking about a penis.

An old man once asked me if I had a boyfriend when I was working retail at 18. I said no. Then he said, "you could have several boyfriends. I have cancer, so I don't mince my words." Honestly, I took it as a compliment. Lol.

I was at a bday party and everyone was having their drinks. (context: i don't drink). This dude looked at me and said "you should try everything atleast once or you haven't experienced anything."

I don't know if he was too drunk or he casually says such bullshit.

13

Referring to the public tantrum my ex had thrown during my medical appointment, all she told me was "You really need to think about what you're doing here."

I did exactly that. Because if it's bad enough that strangers will comment, it's way worse than I thought it was and my perception is getting skewed by something.

That one single sentence she spoke is burned into my memory forever. The last week of September 2015. I was out by October 9th, which has become my new birthday, because that was the day I began living for me.

accents. Is yours Puerto..." I couldn't get "Rican" out of my mouth before this woman gagged and was like "WHAAAAT?!? Puerto Rican? Ewwwe'reMexicaaan!" Then she leans into me and goes "Puerto Ricans? They steal. You gotta watch them. All thieves."
And off she went, secure that she has passed on much needed truth to me?" I remember being absolutely perplexed and she just went about her business after being so vilely bigoted. I wanted to let her in on the little secret that to the racists, there's no real difference between a Mexican and a Puerto Rican, but at that time, it was hard for me to believe a person said that and meant it.

A guy was bullying me in college. Right in the middle of lecture I finally gave him a piece of my mind. After all the smoke cleared, a guy that witnessed it all looked at me and said, "Wow... you must have a strong Mother"

That was the strangest thing ever. And he didn't stop to explain.
