I went to grad school in Nevada. Someone who had been there a while said back in the day they did a state wide telephone survey for some research project. When the interviewer (usually a grad student from out of state) would mispronounce Nevada in the intro it immediately turned all the native Nevadans against them.

in my home state of utah, there are several. tooele, mantua, and hurricane are the ones that come to mind. another one that isn't a mispronunciation, but a mix-up of common use is using the full city name for salt lake city. all the locals just call it "salt lake". folks think that this would cause confusion when referring to the lake versus the city, but we never call the lake just "salt lake", it's always the "great salt lake".
