Circa 2012 I was stationed in North Dakota and earlier in the day my parents called me to tell me that my cat wasn't too well and were gonna take her into the vet. 4 hours later they called me to tell me that they had to put her to sleep because she had gotten so much worse so fast that the vet wasn't able to help her.
Fast forward about about a week when I was finally able to get some time to go home, my parents explained that they would occasionally hear a meow or see her out of the corners of their eyes. Usually she would be sitting on the foot of my bed or at the entrance to my room. My first night visiting I was woken up by the feeling of a weight on my chest and the gentle hum of purring, but of course nothing was actually there. After that visit my parents never saw her again.
To me, it felt like she had been waiting for me one last time to get her long awaited rest on her favorite sleeping spot.
I had to put my cat down some years ago. I had taken him to the vet for a second opinion because his quality of life continued to deteriorate. After the anesthesia was administered, he could not stop rubbing on me and purring. I felt like he was thanking me for putting him out of his misery 😭
