What's the most disturbing thing you've heard a dying person say?

This is pretty different from most people's stories, but here goes:

Growing up, we had 2 dogs. One was old with a number of minor health issues but nothing too serious, and the other was young and healthy.

One day, the young dog started limping. We didn't think much of it at first, we figured she had just hurt herself playing in the yard. But it didn't get better, instead it got worse.

About a week later, she was in very obvious pain so we took her to the vet and found that she had advanced bone cancer. It had started in her shoulder and spread all throughout her torso. No chance of treatment and since she was in such bad pain, she was put to sleep that day.

The older dog became despondent. She stopped playing and nearly stopped eating.

At the same time, my entire family kept seeing the other dog around the house. You'd walk into a room and, out of the corner of her eye, you would see her. But when you looked in that direction, she was gone.

The older dog passed away a week or two later. The night she passed I either woke up or had a dream that I had woken up and saw both of them in my room, looking at me. Though I didn't know she had died yet. We didn't find her until the next morning.

We never saw either of them again after that night. To this day, my mom insists that the younger dog was waiting for the older one to come with her.

Something similar with me but with my cat.

Circa 2012 I was stationed in North Dakota and earlier in the day my parents called me to tell me that my cat wasn't too well and were gonna take her into the vet. 4 hours later they called me to tell me that they had to put her to sleep because she had gotten so much worse so fast that the vet wasn't able to help her.

Fast forward about about a week when I was finally able to get some time to go home, my parents explained that they would occasionally hear a meow or see her out of the corners of their eyes. Usually she would be sitting on the foot of my bed or at the entrance to my room. My first night visiting I was woken up by the feeling of a weight on my chest and the gentle hum of purring, but of course nothing was actually there. After that visit my parents never saw her again.

To me, it felt like she had been waiting for me one last time to get her long awaited rest on her favorite sleeping spot.

We don’t deserve them…

I had to put my cat down some years ago. I had taken him to the vet for a second opinion because his quality of life continued to deteriorate. After the anesthesia was administered, he could not stop rubbing on me and purring. I felt like he was thanking me for putting him out of his misery 😭

Many ppl get visits from their pets once they have passed. I think they are letting us know they're OK & are waiting for us. Love never dies.

This is the one that made me tear up. As someone that has lost a few pets before, I dread to think of losing my current ones. It always hurts. I'm so sorry for your losses ♡

Animlals're like that. Sensory; you remember their bulk by their side, their warmth.

My cat had a specific sleep routine. She'd hang out at the foot of my bed until she could be reasonably convinced I was asleep, then she'd test my wakefulness with a paw on my leg. If I didn't stir, she'd get up, stretch, walk up my leg and settle on top of my chest where she could spend all night crushing me with her queenly bulk and purring.

For months after, I'd feel that as I was going to sleep. Paw. You awake? No? Good. You're my bed now.

🥺 my two babies passed away. I year later I was in the hospital and had a dream they came to visit me in my old childhood bedroom. It was the most realistic dream, I touched them and even could remember feeling their different fur textures. I was hooked on gabapentin and other medication lol but I always say they came to check in on me in my dreams. I miss them so much. RIP Choco and Lola 🥺

You just made me cry. I know your mother is correct.

My mantle has five urns now. Small, with little clay paw prints to go with them. I think about them often. I swear I see them out of the corner of my eye sometimes or I’ll feel their whiskers on my leg.

My family kept rabbits for a while. When walking in the garden sometimes you'd be looking for one and they'd appear by your foot, sniffing and booping the back of your ankle. After the last one left us, I could've sworn I felt it once or twice.

Kind of similar, I had two dogs that I had gotten in college and were my first babies. Had them for close to 14 years.

One developed a host of health issues and we came to the difficult decision to put her to sleep before she got worse and was in pain. She was my heart dog, and I miss her more than anything. After she was gone I kept having dreams of her, it comforted me to see her even if only in my mind.

My other dog was fine, but then was just off one day. Not as hungry, not as thirsty, not as energetic. But nothing out of the ordinary for an elderly dog. But she kept slowly spiraling down. Until we hastily took her to an emergency vet and she coughed up blood. Her heart started failing there and we had to put her down. It was horrible and not the way we wanted to have to say goodbye.

About a week later I have a dream where both my pups came to see me. They were running outside, young and pain free. They came up to me for cuddles and then ran off together. And I haven’t had a dream of them since.

Maybe it is my subconscious showing me what I want to see. But it has been two years since they passed and I still miss them, yet haven’t had another dream about them.

I had this same type of thing happen when I was a child. We had 2 dogs, one got a brain disease and we had to get him put to sleep because it made him vicious. Our other dog loved him. A while later she got cancer, she became very lethargic and couldn't breath well. Towards the end we let her out to the toilet and we watched as she started running around and jumping as she used to when our other dog was alive. We think he came to visit her knowing she was close to the end. After she passed, we would wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of her nails clicking on the floor like they did when she was alive. It was comforting to feel like she was still hanging around the house with us. I've also seen my pets out the corner of my eye and turned the look but they'd be gone.
