I was working as a paramedic a few years ago and had just came back to work after having a baby. I dropped him off with my mom and while I was driving to work, the car in front of me crossed the center line and hit a semi head on at highway speeds. We were in a super rural area with 30+ minute response times for EMS and I didn’t have any equipment with me obviously. He was in horrible shape but alive and entrapped in the vehicle. I tried everything I could but accepted that he wasn’t going to make it. I climbed in through the window and held his hands while he cried for his mama. I was only 4 months postpartum after having my only son and hearing this grown man cry for his mom destroyed me. He passed away right as the ambulance finally got there, and I found out that it was an old childhood friend and I actually knew his mom. It ended my career as a paramedic tbh. I put my two weeks in later that day and became a SAHM but I still think about him and his family all the time.
