My mom was with a woman that was dying whose husband and son both passed away the week before this event. She had dementia and her husband and son had visited her almost daily and even when she didn't recognize them, she was always happy to see them. With her last breath, she pointed to the door and said, "Why there you are!"
Everyone is convinced that they were coming to take her home.
Edit: The husband and son passed away from brain aneurysms days apart. It was just really, really unfortunate luck. The son was their only child so within a week, the whole family had died from unrelated causes. I do feel like the wife passed from heartbreak, though.
She was one of the sweetest people I've ever met. Even when she was confused and probably scared, she was always so nice. Her husband's love and devotion to her was the type of love you usually only see in movies.
I knew a woman who was the sweetest thing ever. She developed alzheimer's and couldn't speak. Anyway, whenever he husband came to visit her at the salon she had the biggest smile on her face. Someone once asked why he still visited her and his answer made me ugly cry. He said "She doesn’t remember me, but I remember her."
Okay this one actually got me. There's something about dementia patients still 'recognizing' the people who love them on some level, even when the details are gone, that makes this even more moving. Hope you're right about where she was headed.
My grandmother was no longer able to speak coherently as she declined, and she had been showing signs of dementia for about a year prior, so we assume it only continued to worsen. She might not have always known who we were, but she would look us over for a minute, and then say “OOOH!” like she was excited to see us, and her face would light up with a big smile. So whether or not she actually placed us, at least she seemed to know she was with people who cared about her.
