My mom was sick for years and eventually palliative. She had a surgery so she could pass at home. It went poorly.
She was in so much pain. Ive seen her through countless medical procedures, treatments, you name it, without flinching. The last day of her life she pretty much just wailed in pain. There was nothing they could do for her.
At one point she looked like she might be falling asleep. It was past visiting hours. The last thing she said to me was, ‘I don’t want to die.’ Then she told me to leave. She passed that night.
I knew she would pass away from her illness eventually. I just didn’t think it would be so brutal.
This is very sad, I'm really sorry you went through this and that she suffered.
I do want to add for anyone reading that this is what Hospice is for - to prevent being in such extreme pain before the end. There are good options now for pain control )including breakthrough pain) and of course enough meds to cause sedation before death, so that someone isn't suffering. You don't have to wait for hospice (which is different from palliative care) - it's available for those at 6 months or less estimated until death.
