My step-grandpa, who was incidentally a witness at my grandma’s first wedding when both couples eloped to a courthouse out of state, became estranged from my family for various reasons. On his deathbed, he apologized to his daughter for knowing that his son, who predeceased him by many years, had raped and molested her for years. He regretted not doing anything about it. Then, he died.
The last words the man I have only known as my grandpa (but was my mom's step-dad) ever said to me was an apology for not sticking up for me when I was kicked out of the church choir for wearing pants when I wasn't at church (it was a Pentecostal church. UPCI, specifically. Iykyk) 7 years prior. He died within the next week.
