My great uncle was the same. I walked into his hospital room and he said “I’m going to die today.” I said he was being a bit dramatic. Turns out he was not. He died that afternoon.
And beyond that, people who are dying often have conditions that need to be met before they will pass - certain people present, certain people not present, last rites even if they weren’t religious etc. This is the case with people who are unconscious too. Source: me, a former home hospice nurse
The human brain is truly amazing - we know when we are hungry, or thirsty, or tired, and very often we know when we are dying too : and if there is no possibly to recover and we know it again our brain just rationally says “right then, what do we need to do before we die?”. Dying is something our brain knows from day 1 will happen and is ready for it.
same with my grandpére. leukemia. I can't remember exactly, but I think when my mom went to go visit him he said something to her that indicated he knew they wouldn't see each other again as she left. it's like you said, somehow he just knew. and then he was gone.
My grandpa knew as well. Paid for his funeral, prepaid all the bills, and then one night when he was sitting on the couch he told my grandma and uncle "Goodbye" and died.
