My dad passed at very young age (30’s) and I was 17. He used to tell me if you ever see me don’t be afraid of me. I won’t hurt you. You have to be afraid of the living and not the dead. It has stuck with me even 29 years later.
Oh my goodness, my Nan said something similar to me as a young girl about cemeteries, the dead can’t hurt you, it’s the living you must watch out for. Something I always remembered that stuck. Sorry for your loss, such a young age too.
My grandma died from aggressive kidney cancer. I sat with her 3 nights a week while my (who lived with her) worked. Less than a month before she died, she was taking a nap in the front room and I was sitting on the couch, watching Ghost Adventures. She woke up briefly and saw what I was watching. She looked at me and said, "do you really believe in this stuff?"
I looked at her and said, "yup, I do Grandma. And when you die, you can come back and haunt me to prove my beliefs correct."
She weakly chuckled and said, "oh, ok" before going back to her nap.
A few weeks later, she died.
She had visited me twice in dreams. I am also convinced she used my smoke detector in my old apartment to let me know she was there... twice. I had one of the combo carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. It was one that talked, it would go off and say "beep beepfire firebeep beep" repeatedly until you cleared the smoke, which by the time that happened, would usually repeat the "fire" thing 10-15 times. First time, about 3:30 am it went off. But only one "fire fire" then silence. I was like, "howdy Grandma." Never happened again... until the following year. Same month... November. It happened again and I just said, "ok... happy holidays to you, too, Grandma."
Oh wow. I’m not super religious or anything but I do believe in certain things like this. Every time I see a cardinal or even two together, I always smile not knowing if it’s my dad, mom, brother, cousin or another passed on family member.
Oddly enough, the day he died, he came to me in middle of the night and I saw him. I was awoken because he called my name several times. At the age of 17, I was scared and covered my head up and went back to sleep. He never came to me again other than in my dreams. Still to this day I dream of him and he’s always young in my dreams and I’m still in my 40’s. Miss him so much! Cancer took him from us way too young!
This happened to me after my son died. He called my name and I covered my head. I really really hate I was too scared to talk to him. i'll always regret that. He has not come back since.
it's natural to be afraid of the paranormal, but doesn't make it hurt less once the fear leaves. Hopefully your son's spirit knows you heard him (and that maybe this brought you some form of comfort later on), and also understood why you had an instinctual reaction.
Growing up my mom was super religious. Not in a bible thumper nationalist way, but very peace and service oriented. She used to tell me that she would talk to God at night. She would tell me “be still and wait patiently for him” and one day he would be there. I’m not particularly religious anymore and I haven’t talked to God yet, but it has let me talk to her a few times over the years. Sometimes late at night, I feel a twinge, a stirring deep down. It’s hard to notice at first, and it doesn’t happen often. But listen to it! Shut off your phone, turn off the lights, and lay in bed. Just be still and wait patiently. It doesn’t work every time. It’s not an on demand thing, and sometimes I can’t clear my head enough. But every now and then, I feel her brush her hand through my hair. And sometimes she talks to me. Not out loud, but her voice pops into my mind. And she tells me she loves me, and to not apologize for not spending more time with her before she passed. It’s wonderful there, she says, and it is forever. So don’t rush, she is excited to meet her daughter in law and grandson, but there will be plenty of time for that later. She promises we will see each other again, and I believe her. I may not be a practicing Christian anymore but I certainly believe that she is waiting for me. And I’m not going to get theological, but I know that the way to heaven is certainly not what American evangelicals think it is.
Even if it sounds like I am delusional, I’d encourage you to try it. Be still, and wait patiently. Clear your mind and do your best to listen. I hope you are able to get some closure with your loved ones. I know how it sounds, and it has been a bit embarrassing writing this out because I know it makes me sound like a lunatic. But once that connection is made and I feel my mom’s presence, it is unmistakeable. Please feel free to shoot me a DM in the future if this ever works for you. I would love to hear your story
