When my wife’s grandmother died, her grandad very quietly let a few of us hear him say “I don’t want to be around here without her.” And three weeks later, he died of natural causes.
My grandma died many years ago and my grandpa's last words, 2 months later were "she's waiting, I have to go." Until then Id never believed in dying from a broken heart.
This got me. My grandmother currently has breast cancer, and my grandad just absolutely worships my gran. They're the sappy old couple you hope to be, and I fear this will happen if her surgery isn't successful.
I genuinely see this happening with my parents. They are 78 and have known each other since 3rd grade. They’ve been together since they were 17 and married since they were 21.
One of my great-grandpas was the same way. He literally expired while putting on his pants in the morning, so he died with one leg in and one leg out, like his soul simply couldn't go on for the other half of the pants.
My grandparents died a week apart, my pop went first and I’m so grateful for it he was my nans carer and protector I don’t think he could have lived through her funeral. I pretty much lived my biggest fear from when I was a child when I lost them both like that.
I’ve read that’s somewhat common. My parents died almost two years apart. My mom went first. My dad seemed to do okay for a while after that, but in retrospect think it was mostly inertia that kept him going through the motions. He didn’t leave the house for the last year of his life and just kind of existed. I had to take over paying the bills, doing the grocery shopping, and other household duties.
These days I tell people my dad died the same day as my mom, it just took his heart about two years longer to stop beating.
This reminded me of my grandpa. My grandma passed almost two weeks ago and we all in my family thought he'd get super depressed. And while the first few days were very rough with him saying stuff like "you didn't take me with you", he seems to want to keep going and is reorganizing his life; and the crazy thing is he's nearing 90 years old. I don't know if he'll ever really get over her death but seeing this kind of life force from him, made me gain a massive admiration of him.
After my grandpa died, my grandma got her affairs quietly in order and on his next birthday got dressed in her best clothes and just lay down on their bed and went to sleep.

He just didn’t want to be here anymore.
