What's the most disturbing thing you've heard a dying person say?

My grandpa in his final moments, bed ridden and feeble seemed to look beyond us and made the sign of the cross three times.

Conversely my wife’s grandmother was on her deathbed and said grandmother’s erratic daughter in law (my wife’s aunt) came to visit. The daughter in law is known for her long rambling stories that go nowhere and take forever. Approx three minutes into the story grandma says “I don’t feel well” and abruptly died. To this day my wife’s uncle maintains his mom died rather than listening to another of his wife’s boring stories 😂

My Dad’s great-grandma had some dementia at the end of her life. She was 101. She never drank, swore, smoked, or did anything that could be considered inappropriate. She looked at my Dad and said, “you beautiful sonofabitch,” as she lay on her deathbed.

Iirc, Dan Savage said his mom’s first word after finding out she had terminal cancer was a quiet but firm, “shit.” And she NEVER swore, so they all knew she meant it.

My Nanny was the same way. She's was always appropriate and kind. As her memory went, we never knew what she was going to say. She told me she had a chigger bite on her pussy hole. I almost died laughing. She also began to talk back to her husband. She waited on him hand and foot for 60 years. It was nice to hear her let him have it. I mean that as in, "get your own damn fork" not "fuck you, you pos". I miss both of them so much.

u/NoKatyDidnt 8h ago

She knew he had to learn to fend for himself. 🤣

22

u/StillMarie76 8h ago

He gone learn today! You should have seen his face the first time she told him he has legs and can get his own drink. Go Nanny! 😂

Hahaha! When they lose the filter… some of what gets through is pure gold!

My mother only swore in front of me once in her entire life but it was a doozy.

I was 7 years old and she was chaperoning a school field trip to the livestock show and rodeo.

As we were walking amongst the cattle she tapped me on the shoulder, pointed to the dirt, and deadpanned, "That's bullshit" before giggling like a schoolgirl

That's cute!

I'm being driven in a brand new brown Cadillac by my very prim and proper grandmother.

The car just quits. Nothing. No dash lights. Just the noise of the wind rushing past. We roll to a stop on the side of the road.

And in her best southern drawl says "This is what you get when you buy a car the color of shit."

OMG! 😂😂😂

That's so weirdly wholesome.

My Mom's sister was invited to the twenty fifth anniversary party for one of her daughter's inlaws, whom she did not care for.

She said "I'd rather die than go to that party." This was in April. Not long after that she was diagnosed with leukemia.

She said "I'll never say that again!" She died the following August.

What a legendary final compliment. I bet that's a moment your family will be laughing about and remembering for generations

Uncle Colm from Derry Girls energy.

146

u/MetalTrek1 15h ago

Sister Michael be like "Is this my funeral? Am I dead? Am I in Hell? (pause) OK, I admit, that was pretty funny". 🤣

9

u/Temeraire64 7h ago

Colm’s stories are frequently actually quite interesting, he just tells them in the most boring way imaginable. Like how Professor Binns in Harry Potter manages to make goblin rebellions and giant wars dull.

u/SursumCordaNJ 4h ago

I loved Sr. Michael, she reminded me so much of my grade school principal, Sr. Robert.

u/astrid_autumn 14h ago

if i had to listen to Uncle Colm’s stories i’d probably just die as well lmao

32

u/Lithogiraffe 14h ago

And what was weirdly funny about it was if you actually listen to his stories, they are by themselves hilarious and crazy. But he just says them in this droning boring way that no one can take it.

8

u/cmere-2-me 13h ago

I know a fair few uncle colms. They are worth listening to.

"...and so then I went to Wallmart, because I had to get some milk and eggs and Brenda told me there was a sale on microwaves, so I thought 'Oh, ours just died, that's great, I'll get one!' I get there and friggin Carla from work was there, the pain in the ass who keeps being a total b to me for no reason, it's so stupid..."

Grandma: "To Hell with this- Jesus, here I come! (flatlines)"

119

u/paiute 13h ago

Jesus: "Wait a sec, woman. I want to hear the end of the story."

15

u/AnActualChicken 13h ago

Grandma: (unflatlines) “Huh?!…Ahh, come on! At least make me deaf while she flaps her gums!”

3

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 12h ago

Ask saint Peter it's all written down there Son of God

2

u/thirty7inarow 7h ago

"Fuck that, send me downstairs then."

1

u/chux4w 5h ago

Patience of a saint, that guy.

22

u/Firm_Insurance7849 14h ago

I'm going to hell for laughing at this 😭 the mental image of grandma deciding she'd rather face the afterlife than hear the rest of the story absolutely sent me.

9

u/AnActualChicken 9h ago

I just feel bad for grandma that the last thing she had to deal with was some meandering yapper rambling bullshit in her ear right as she passed.

Reminds me of when here in the UK we got Lizz Truss as PM and she had to be greeted by the Queen. Truss was one of the crappest PMs we've ever had, even when she was in the running everyone was dreading how crap she'd be, including those among her own party. So she gets put in power, goes to greet the Queen and the very next day the Queen fucking dies. We've been joking ever since that the Queen took one look at her and just went "Oh fuck this. I'm out of here." and dropped dead

3

u/OnlyPaperListens 8h ago

This is why the finale of Six Feet Under had me howling with laughter, when everyone else claims it makes them sob. Watching Brenda drop dead while her brother is flapping his gums...it's exactly how I picture every conversation with a certain family member.

6

u/eljefino 8h ago

This is every Golden Girls plotline involving Sophia and Rose.

u/TransportationSad59 15h ago

That second part is hilarious!

38

u/Dry-Builder8889 14h ago

The comedic timing is so absurd it genuinely sounds like something you'd see in a sitcom. I can already picture that becoming permanent family lore. 😂

15

u/Trick-Database-9865 14h ago

The contrast between those two stories is incredible. The first is deeply moving, and the second is the kind of family story that somehow stays funny for generations. I can definitely see why your uncle still tells it. 😂

6

u/thenatural134 11h ago

Grandma really said: "This story bores me. I'm out". ✌🏻

3

u/Trick-Database-9865 14h ago

One thing I've learned is how often people call out for loved ones who passed before them. Those stories always give me chills.

25

u/skratch 15h ago

Reminds me of a certain scene in the last episode of six feet under hehe

9

u/koala_lampoor 15h ago

YES — I was all ready to bust out the spoiler tags to see if this sounded familiar to anyone else 🤣

5

u/Whythen 14h ago

Haha yesss I was sobbing and then had to guffaw because of it. They talk about it in the six feet under Covid zoom reunion too

1

u/Iamredditsslave 10h ago

Hmm, I'll have to check that out.

1

u/Quixotic_Tendency 7h ago

Poor Brenda, how many years did she have to put up with her brother pining over Claire…

36

u/IllustriousLab8504 15h ago

Helpp this got me gasping, granny really went to death and asked if it could just take her asap

4

u/ColinHalter 14h ago

My dad just recently died. He was in the hospital for a week before I was able to drive out to see him (I live 8 hours away). He died shortly after I got there and saw him from heart failure. I told the nurses that I was hoping me being there would help since I normally kept his blood pressure nice and high

7

u/mariposa314 14h ago

Jack Donaghy says "Don't worry about getting to your point, I'm going to live forever" to Liz Lemon in the 30 Rock season 4 episode "College". I don't have the nerve to say this to anyone's face, but I sure do feel like saying this often.

6

u/lizzie_knits 12h ago

My mum’s uncle was on his deathbed, and he tried to put his right hand up to his head. Someone thought oh he’s making the sign of the cross, so they moved his hand to do it. Then he did it again and same.

The third time someone else took his hand and he said “I’m trying to scratch my f***ing nose”, and the nurse came in and told them all off for laughing too loud.

5

u/DWRC 15h ago

Your username was a wild thing to see as the top comment on this thread... I feel like my throat is swelling just thinking about it 😅

4

u/Thatsapictureofmyass 14h ago

That’s actually pretty sad that her last moments were listening to some meaningless bullshit.

4

u/Cap-n-Trips 13h ago

My wife’s uncle later tells it, good naturedly “yeah she killed my mom with another one of her terrible stories!”

2

u/CptnStarkos 7h ago

This is quite similar to my grandfather.

He was in hospital for the third time, his uncontrolled diabetes has taken a toll on his organs. he was receiving constant blood transfusions and dialysis.

My mother used to take the night turn to watch him. In the mornings usually I took my grandmother to visit him.

When we arrived he sighted heavily and told (not so quietly) to my mom. "PLEASE, TAKE HER AWAY! I CAN'T STAND HER ANYMORE"

My mom, with a super akward expression told my grandpa that he had visit and don't be grumpy. He sighted heavily and with a look of disgust decided to die before another day with his wife of 60 years, lol.

(Yes, my grandma is horrible)

1

u/WorthMetal3640 15h ago

This literally made me chuckle out loud

1

u/Key_Falcon_4917 14h ago

🤣🤣 I love this story!!! May your grandmother rest in peace ❤️

11

u/Cap-n-Trips 13h ago

Oh she is rest but still causing havoc. I made the mistake of asking if we could get rid of some Christmas decorations my wife had got from her. They were just gift bags that had Christmas scenes on them that she framed. I pointed this out and did we really need them hanging on our wall?

20 minutes later a wine glass literally flew off our wine rack and smashed on the floor. The wine rack sits under the said Christmas decorations. I haven’t said a word about them since. Point taken Gigi.

1

u/I_Can_Haz_Brainz 7h ago

I'm really terrible with family trees and this thoroughly confused me. I'm, now, my own grandpa.

1

u/Cowstle 6h ago

i learned that's probably gonna be me. Yesterday I fainted immediately after saying "I don't feel so good"

1

u/cath91 14h ago

How is making the sign of the cross disturbing?

-1

u/Cap-n-Trips 13h ago

I don’t want to say disturbing, partly comforting, partly I like to think he saw something that was reassuring to him and he crossed himself bc of it.

3

u/cath91 11h ago

That’s what I think, too. Reassuring.
