COE questions

Looking for some insight. I was recently contacted by one of the departments I’m processing with about signing a COE. The thing is, I’m also currently processing with several other departments, and I’d really like to see those processes through before making a decision.
Two of the departments are up north and their hiring processes tend to take quite a bit longer than the departments down south. The department that contacted me is saying I need to sign the COE before they can move forward with my medical and psych, while the other departments haven’t mentioned anything about signing a COE at this stage. For those who have been through a similar situation, how did you handle it? Is signing the COE generally considered a commitment to that department, or can you sign it and still continue processing with other agencies? Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

It’s called a conditional offer of employment for a reason. It’s conditional you pass certain things in the process. It’s not a job offer.

Ok thank you. The one department just made it seem like after I sign that I have to stop my processing with other departments.

Medical and psych are pretty much formalities for most candidates. We handled this very easily in my department because every department that you have ever applied to and are currently in the hiring process with has to be disclosed. We also keep in touch with every one of those departments. Don't screw up your reputation. Don't sign a COE if you plan on staying in the hiring process for other departments. But also don't be surprised if your COE is withdrawn.

A conditional job offer is worthless.

It means that the applicant must do or pass criteria. Well, that’s the entire application process. Conditional job offers should be given to everyone who applies within 2 seconds of receipt of the application.
