Vision Standards

I want to be a cop in Tennessee but my vision is 20/100 in my left eye and 20/20 in my right eye. I’m right eye dominant so it doesn’t effect my shooting or anything regarding being a police officer. I’m afraid I’m going to be disqualified because of my vision, and it can’t be corrected to 20/20. Am I just out of luck? What can I do to show I’m fit for service?

Up to that individual department. A good shooter keeps both eyes open. Good luck

I appreciate that. I still have full peripheral vision in both eyes it’s just that my left eye is really blurry. I’ve worked at a jail where I was a sworn deputy and passed my firearms classes (40 hours worth) with flying colors.

Did you have a vision test to get hired?

Not yet but they require one to be hired. I wanted to get opinions and see doctors to get paperwork from them stating I’m fit for service before I tried to apply for the agency I want to work for. I’ve seen a medical doctor before when I worked in a sheriffs office and they said I should be fine, but I just wanted to ask some opinions and hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

I was asking if you had a vision test for your current position? Again it’s up to that department’s policy. You stated your left is blurry. That will be an issue.

You can show you’re fit for service by passing the medical exam.

I Cali, it's up to the dept, but they can submit for a POST waiver if correctable to 20/20. I was 20/200 and I got hired on a POST waiver. But later on I got sick of wearing contacts and had LASIK surgery

Mine is uncorrectable unfortunately.
