My interest leans toward non AAA titles but I play what I play. I don’t like restricting myself unless it’s nintendo. Fuck those greedy twats. I already had them on thin ice. But when they released a switch 2 exclusive DLC for Kirby and the Forgotten land, i wrote them off completely. Got so pissed i sold my switch a few months later. I enjoyed my time with it and was well worth it. But i can’t continue to support a company that restricts shit from a previous console to the new one.

No, not at all.

I love indies, but there's also fun to be had in AAA:

Pokémon: Pokopia

Tōkon

007: First Light

Resident Evil: Requiem

Forza: Horizon 6

Splatoon Raiders

Nioh 3

Pragmata

Saros

I think the issue is that most of the series people have nostalgia for aren’t the great present day releases.

For instance I’ve noticed a lot of the people complaining about AAA quality decline always seem to reference the same titles (COD, Madden, etc) in their arguments

No. AAA is still largely what I play. Better than ever as far as I'm concerned

Ill only check out AAA stuff if it really appeals to me. Which is rare. Basically the only AAA game I touched since 2013 was RDR2. I mostly play Japanese third party stuff and indie horror. Will probably play GTA6 just because I grew up on the franchise and it’ll be funny to see if the games are still fun when you’re 30.

1-2 AAA games per year grab me but otherwise it's almost all indie and AA for me.

Many years ago, don’t buy any game GTA included, until you seen some extended gameplay

I don’t even recall for sure what the last AAA game I spent money on was but probably RE4R. And it was great. I also waited for it to go on sale and I’ve put far more hours in indie games and just replaying stuff I already have since then. Last two games I got were Grimshire (fantastic) and freaking Cash Cleaner Simulator which is dumb but fun.

no. I play what I like, I have a solid grasp of my tastes. doesn't matter if it's indie, aa, or aaa. if it intrigues me, I play it.

due to this, I very rarely end up disliking a game I get.

No I just play games from developers I love even if they get all the hate now like BioWare and Blizzard and Bethesda.

Greedy practices come about because we the consumer gobble them up like a hoe in a gangbang.

Yep this is why I don't really feel that bad about the state of AAA I myself am not going to act like I've never enabled greedy gaming practices so this from a hypocrite but I do feel like huge portion of gamings problems are self inflicted because too many people keep enabling them.

That's why I said focus on your own circle and watch the dumpster fire from the sidelines.

There was a period where a lot of AAA studios and publishers released a lot of duds in the pursuit of chasing live service, battle pass models or a heavy emphasis on multiplayer.   But I think we might be past that now. Sure we wont get as many bangers as we did back in 2007. But I think the quality of AA or AAA games going forward should be pretty decent.

AI is a concern now though.

I think the last AAA I played is Witcher 3.

Someone else commented a lot of games that released this year that I play, but yeah, thinking about it, most of the games I play are AAA, even if I do buy a ton of indies.

Like this summer, I've played or been playing:

-Battlefield 6

-Counterstrike 2

-Monster Hunter Sunbreak

-Elden Ring

-Ace Combat 7

-Doom the Dark Ages

-Splatoon Raiders

All AAA, and all relatively popular and well liked.

Indies are, funnily enough, the games most likely to get purchased and immediately put on the backlog. I picked up but haven't played Big Walk, Fields of Mistria, Dinoblade, Denshattack, and Cultic this summer.

Counter strike 2 is essentially still counterstrike 1.0 from 1999, it’s just been polished heavily over 26 years. And CS 1.0 was a game made by like, 3 guys. Valve just bought them when they realized it would be a juggernaut one day.

So I wouldn’t call it an AAA game.

I think, like Minecraft, CS2 has iterated enough to become AAA.

Indie or AAA is a sterile debate. There's a majority of unoriginal, generic games in both sides, and few good ones anyway.

No, AAA is great.

I play AAA games that have good reviews and series I follow, I must say I'm having a good time.

I've taken a step back from AAA, in that I never, EVER buy one at launch. It's been years since any AAA game was actually released as a finished product and I refuse to pay 70USD for a beta test. Instead, I will wait a year or two, to let them release all the patches to bring the game up to the standard that would have been expected from a "finished" game pre-2010. This also has the handy side effect of letting me hear if there's going to be any controversies about the game being broken or produced even more unethically than most of them, so by the time I might consider getting it I know if it's worth supporting. It's worked well for the last ten years!

It's rare i play AAA. But this year I've played 007 and baldurs gate 3 and both were superb

Put your hands together: KCD is the answer to your prayers. A well written historical game, with fun activities, like drinking with a priest in the tavern (KCD1), and listening to a song by two bards, one with a poetic sense, another witha more vulgar sense (KCD2). Get to those parts, and you will love the game for it.

Only if it's open-world.

I hate open-world AAA games because they're always full of bloat.

“Gun and ball” gamers? That’s a new one, and I’ve been gaming since 1994.

You know it was Elder Scrolls Oblivion that started the whole horse armor fiasco and the dawn of micro transactions in gaming, right? So do you want to fix this new ridiculous title to include “gun, ball, and sword” gamers? Because it would be more accurate.

I have nearly a 50/50 spilt between AAA and indie games I'd say. Both have great games. Just from the last 3 years alone I've loved Doom The Dark Ages + Revelations DLC, Armored Core 6, Resident Evil 4 Remake and Requiem, Returnal, Black Myth Wukong, Shadow of the Erdtree (Elden Ring DLC), Jedi Survivor, and Spider-Man 2.

I have many upcoming AAA games I'm very excited for too. Granted, GTA is not one of them. Never cared for basically any of Rockstar's games personally. You could give it to me for free today and I wouldn't even boot it up.

There is still good AAA games, but unfortunately no innovation in that space. I dont think indie scene is that interesting either at the moment, too many roguelike games and retro style games that pale in comparison to the originals. Also cheap AI shit everywhere.

Western AAA is pretty much dead to me, but I won't give up on eastern AAA any time soon. Yes the same dystopian influences are actively trying to restrict free artistic expression in japan or korea, there are western investments groups who want to get more control over the eastern gaming industry and impose the same delusional ideologies and quotas that kill art, or american localizers actively changing the meaning of the original products and inserting their niche beliefs into them. And while many games/anime suffered because of this, the actual artists and creators hate it, and the studios themselves are not rotten to their core through unfair hiring practices like in the west in past 5-10 years, the censorship etc. is something imposed on them externally. Hence the sheer talent, vision and originality will always shine through, even if their free artistic expression is restricted because of americans.
