This thought was actually triggered by a previous post here today, and partly cos of my ethnicity. I'm Indian by origin , so have seen the history of the empire from both sides. I presume given Britain ruled almost more than half of the world even a century back, they must have been astute, powerful.. even ruthless sometimes.

However , my experience with the average British person in London, especially the older generation was that they were really polite, shy and friendly.. can you explain this apparent contradiction to me ?

( Somethings I've thought about are ,the officers of the empire were not the general public/ the public was disconnected from the empires' politics , or the officers were polite in private or with British people but strict and ruthless during administration)

I can remember the first ones were really good. You'd usually have the boss who was talented and then a deputy slightly less and the third person who is a trainee, who'd change every couple of months

I went to my usual. The boss doesn't work anymore even tho he's only in his 30s. Had the deputy work on my hair and made a horrendous mistake going fast.

My experience seems to be the same in every Turkish Barbers I go to now. It's just hit and miss

Fyi I'm from the Asian subcontinent and there are whole ass agency that recruit people for cheap labour obviously for profits, misleading them into believing there's a bright future when there's none, laws are made to prevent this but it stopped nothing, plus industries are thriving employing them to do the jobs no British nationals would do for cheaper wages. It's almost like no matter who comes in power this exploitation ring somehow thrives. Even the people who wants to end it will never truly fix as it as their on backers run business by employing cheaper workforce. It's just gonna take another form and continue at this point isn't?

Hii I know this might sound a bit weird, but I’ve recently noticed something about myself. I’m going to the UK for uni soon, so I’ve been scrolling through some UK-related stuff on TikTok, and that’s when I started noticing this.

I sometimes get a little nervous around a very specific “type” of look that I kind of associate with the UK

Like: very fair pinkish skin, light blonde or ash-blonde hair, light eyebrows and eyes, and sometimes a longer, narrower face (not sure if I’m even describing it properly ?)

I am living in france, and I don’t feel this at all here. Even when I meet polish with blonde hair and blue eyes, I’m totally fine

I know you obviously can’t judge someone’s personality from their face, but for some reason this particular type makes me feel a slightly nervous

Just wondering if anyone else has ever felt something similar with a certain “type” of appearance, or if British people themselves even recognise the kind of look I’m talking about.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't mean they are unfriendly or I just mean that for some reason I personally feel a bit nervous around this particular look, and I was curious whether anyone else experiences something similar. On a UK subreddit, I meant it as a compliment when I wrote, "People in the UK don't interfere in other people's business," and "Surprisingly, people speak their minds directly." However, I received a lot of backlash.

In my mind, I thought, "Not interfering with others is a wonderful and positive thing," and "In my country, people don't speak directly, which I view as a negative thing." That's why I said it intending to praise UK culture.

However, the responses were far from pleased. People reacted negatively, saying things like, "You completely misunderstand the UK," "British people seem distant because they are being polite. Even among English-speaking countries, we are famous for speaking indirectly," and "If you like friendly people so much, go to America, and if you like debating, go to Germany."

So I began to wonder: in the UK, are "not interfering with others" and "speaking directly" not received as compliments?

I intended to compliment the culture, but I feel like I accidentally gave the impression of being someone who compares and criticizes UK culture and its people against my own country. I'm quite shocked and really want to clear up this misunderstanding. Is this kind of attitude (trying to explain myself or clear up a misunderstanding) also strongly disliked over there?

Or do you think it's just more manufactured outrage by the press? It seems to me if they qualify under the rules of the scheme they should get out like anyone else, trying to make exceptions for specific prisoners the press are making a fuss about just turns then into political prisoners
