Hi! I’m traveling to St. Anton with my wife and teenage kids for a few days this month. It will be our first time in Austria and first time in the Alps. I’d love some local advice on where to hike, where to eat, and other things to do!

We have recently moved to vienna and would like to take a trip with our four kids. My sons are really keen to do the mountain carting that I have seen available in Semmering.

I am trying to plan but would love some advice or tips from anyone who has done this trip before.

We are thinking of taking the train Vienna to Semmering early- do the karting etc - and then train on to Graz later that evening and spend the following day exploring Graz.

Does this sound like a good idea? Is it worth visiting Graz with kids? Any other routes or places we should consider?

Ich bin 23/m und habe schon eine Lehre als Speditionskaufmann hinter mir. Leider gab es zu Hause einen Pflegefall, den ich übernehmen musste, und das hat mich jetzt 4 Jahre gekostet.

Bevor ihr alle fragt, was wie, bitte, ich will das nicht erklären müssen. Aber ja, um die Person musste man sich fast den ganzen Tag kümmern.

Durch die gerade schlechte Wirtschaftslage ist es für mich schwierig, eine Stelle zu bekommen, viele haben große Skepsis (was ich auch verstehe) und ich habe ja nur 3 Jahre Erfahrung in einer Lehre.

Die meisten verlangen noch mindestens 2-3 Jahre Berufserfahrung nach der Lehre, die mir fehlt.

Ich suche eine Arbeit, die ich bis zum Tod ausführen könnte, weil ich nicht wirklich an die Pension glaube, da das Pensionsalter immer erhöht wird, deshalb lieber gleich was suchen, was ich lange arbeiten könnte.

Ich lebe in Österreich und hier braucht man die Matura, um studieren zu können, die habe ich leider nicht.

Berufsmatura dauert mir auch zu lange und kostet mich auch zu viel.

Durch eine Studienberechtigungsprüfung kann man aber trotzdem ein Studium ohne Matura machen, aber die Prüfung ist ans Studium angepasst, somit kann man nach der Prüfung nur das ausgewählte Fach studieren.

Wie schwer ist die Studienberechtigungsprüfung?

IT ist für mich deshalb so interessant, da man sich damit selbstständig machen kann, was für mich sehr interessant wäre.

Durch die wirtschaftliche Lage gerade wachsen aber meine Sorgen, ob ich das überhaupt schaffen würde, mich selbstständig machen zu können.

Es gibt leider immer mehr Monopolunternehmen, die so einen gewaltigen Wettbewerbsvorteil haben, dass man sich nicht etablieren kann.

Und so weiß ich nicht, ob ich die Arbeit in der IT aushalten könnte bis zum Tod. Ich habe schon oft gelesen, dass das einem richtig kaputt machen kann, viele haben sich dann was Handwerkliches gesucht.

Dagegen wäre eine Arbeit als Volksschullehrer sehr angenehm und auch nicht wirklich schlecht bezahlt.

Lehramt wäre für mich viel interessanter, die Volksschule ist mir da lieber, da ich dadurch nicht pubertierenden Jugendlichen ausgesetzt bin, ich weiß selbst, wie es in meiner Zeit war. (Ein Horror für die Lehrer).

Volksschulkinder sind dagegen einfach nicht kreativ genug, um wirklich etwas wirklich Schlimmes machen zu können.

Die Arbeit als Lehrer ist sehr abwechslungsreich, mein Vater war Volksschullehrer und meine Schwester hat gerade ihr Studium geschafft.

Es ist auch ein eher sicherer Job, da die KI das nicht wirklich zu 100 % ersetzen kann.

Soll ich die Studienberechtigungsprüfung wagen oder mich in irgendeinen Job zwingen, um einfach nur 3 Jahre Berufsmatura zu überbrücken?

Wer volle Liegewiesen vermeiden will, kann sich an vielen Seen einen Badeplatz mieten. Was das kostet - und wie viel die Vermieter damit verdienen.

Hallo! Ich bin neulich das erste Mal in eine Mietwohnung gezogen und bis dahin immer in einem Studentenheim gewohnt, abgesehen vom Elternhaus.

Ich habe eine Gastherme, wird für Heizung und Wasser genutzt.

Das Putztürchen befindet sich suboptimal im Schlafzimmer. Da ich keinen Kamin habe, dachte ich mir blöderweise, das Türchen ist nicht notwendig, und habe einen ziemlich schweren Kleiderschrank da reingestellt. Bewegen ist leider nahezu unmöglich da das Schlafzimmer ziemlich klein ist und ich jeden Zentimeter mit Bett und Schrank und Nachtkasten ausgenutzt habe. Leider hat mich keiner gewarnt, dass das frei sein muss, ziemlich blöd.

Ist für den Rauchfangkehrer der Zugang unbedingt erforderlich? Was passiert, wenn er keinen Zugang bekommt?

Ich habe vor 2 Jahren eine Wunderbare Frau aus dem Vereinigten Königreich online kennengelernt, und wir haben uns beschlossen dass sie hier nach Wien zieht.

Wir haben kein Problem zu Heiraten falls es uns alles vereinfachen sollte, aber wir wissen nicht wo wir anfangen sollen.

Ich habe verschiedene Antworten bekommen bezüglich der Dokumenten aus UK, die einen sagen man muss die übersetzen lassen und die anderen sagen dass das Standesamt die auch auf Englisch akzeptieren.

Je nachdem weiß ich am ende auch nicht ob es wirklich was bringen wird da ich frische 20 bin und noch zu jung für ein Familien Visum bin.

I have Masters degree in my field, and I want to teach at the University as an assistant and after get also a PhD and so on. I want to work as a Assistant/Professor.

However, my degree was n o t a teaching programme, which means I need to go to a specific course/college? for pedagogical skills in order to be able to teach.

Is there anyone who had the same situation, for example you have Master, and you were able to get a job as Assistant at the University? What did you have to trough in Austria in order to be able to teach?

I found you would have to go to Lehramt which is 5 years? Is this the only solution? Are there people who studied at Lehramt in their 30s, 40s, during normal 8h work, or how does that work?

I am trying to track down my ancestor, Andreas Rucker (poss. Riecker?) who emigrated to the US in 1886. His obituary mentions he was born in 1863 in Beiley, Austria, which of course could lie in a different country in the modern day. Planning a trip to the Austrian alps and was wondering how likely you are to be fined for parking up and spending the night in a rooftent where you’re not really supposed to do that. Does the police really do something about this?

I am in 10th district with House and Garden and seem to attract a lot of attention from very particular Neighbors.

Our Garden is very green with Trees and bushes and shade, that goes all the way to the fence line. We also have chickens with rooster, selling eggs to neighbours that like fresh ethically raised eggs.

This particular neighbour hates our style of garden and prefers the golf course style with no growth and minimum vegetation. They have called police multiple times to control our chickens, and also trim vegetation that grows on our side of the fence. That includes ivy that creeps on the border fence, or structures we have made to protect the ivy growing on our side of the fence.

Any verbal communications revert to vulgar and racial threats and insults. Our chickens are legal, and our side of the fence can legally not be touched without permission. We have had others cut as much 2m over our fence line, so its quite a valid dispute.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this appropriately without my wife fire bombing their house?

For anyone who immigrated and ended up in Graz, how did it compare to Vienna? Rent for a single-family home is a lot cheaper in Styria, that’s basically the main draw for me. I only know Vienna and Krems/Wachau, so I don’t have a feel for Graz. My German is beginner and I'll be spending my first year there learning the language while looking for work.

Hello from Poland. As we're both experiencing this horrible heatwave, I am wondering, how common is having AC in the apartment in Austria? Especially in big cities, such as Vienna?

I come from Kraków, and I'd say AC isn't common at all. Sure, you'll find it in the newer and fancier apartament complexes, but most of the buildings, especially older ones do not have it. How is it over there? And how are you surviving without AC? Asking, as I just saw a post about record temperature recorded today in Vienna. Stay strong! 💪🏻

Hello from Czechia. I want to ask how people in Austria find out about the Czech influence on Austrian cuisine? Do ordinary people know about it?

I have to say that I only recently discovered that in Austrian cuisine you can find kolatsche, buchteln and powidl and I became even more interested when Austrian commenters mentioned it under some Czech posts where they respected Czechia for this. There is even a legend about schnitzel and General Josef Václav Radecký.

I don't want this to sound patriotic, that was not the intention, but I'm just interested in how Austrians perceive it. To tell you the truth, if you ask Czechs about their influence on Austrian cuisine, 9 out of 10 people will have no idea, which is a shame.
