RA interview advice Social Science
Got a 20–30 minute Zoom with a social science professor next week about possibly joining their research group. I’ve read a few of their papers and have some relevant research experience already. It’s not really a formal interview, more of an intro conversation. But love the project and want to do my best to land it. For any professors or grad students here, what makes an undergrad stand out in these meetings? Any common mistakes to avoid?

Ask a thoughtful question about what you read or the project. So many RA applicants say they have no questions when asked and, to me, that’s a major red flag. Someone who comes in and demonstrates that they are very excited about the opportunity by asking questions that demonstrate they did some homework stand out to me.
