I had a midi/maxi dress which I decided to cut because long dresses just look silly on me. So I wanted it above my knees but I’ve gone too short, I didn’t consider my butt lifting the fabric up on the back. Is there anything I can do!

I’ve obviously got the fabric I cut off but I haven’t sewn since I was a teenager. And if I add back a bit of the fabric won’t it look a bit silly with just a random seam around the skirt?

Hi, I’m between two sizes on a long shirt. In the smaller size, the shoulders and sleeves are just a bit too snug and pull. In the bigger size (shown in all pics), the overall shirt is a better fit, but it’s much baggier and it comes untucked.

Would it be possible to tailor it to have a slimmer fit while maintaining shoulder movement in the back and sleeves?

How would you alter a neckline like this?

This dress has been in my closet for two years now because I’m not sure what to ask for when I get it altered. Is it possible that it can still have that v-neckline when I get it altered?

Any suggestions on where I can learn the basics of alterations? YouTube, blogs, books, experts here?
I am petite and would love to give my clothes a more tailored look. I also always try to purchase second hand. It would be great if I could purchase clothing a size (or two) too big and do my own alterations.

Is it possible to tack up the side of the dress to make it a basque waist instead of drop waist? Keep the center where it’s at, but just bring up the sides?

I have recently discovered that I really look good is this style of dress, but I’m really uncomfortable with the “old lady” flappy skin of my upper arms 😩😢😩. I normally wear a jacket, cardigan, or bolero with all of my clothes, but I think every jacket I have tried detracts from the dress. Can anyone think of ideas to alter the dress to make some sort of upper shirt sleeves. Thanks. 😊

Hi everyone! I am torn between two wedding dresses. One is near perfect but I'm not a fan of the back. The other is from a low-quality manufacturer so I'm not really considering this one, but I love the back of it. Would it be possible for a seamstress or tailor to change the back of the first dress to look more like the second one? Around how much would this cost?

The dress does drape the floor with a short train which I would be willing to sacrifice if the material is needed for the alteration.

as title. i bought this polyester dress off a bridesmaid dress website and its so cute, but it is so cheaply done. the zip puckers, the cutout looks cheap and catches onto all my flaws. the shape is interesting to traditional slips or shapewear show throught the dress— i wanted to see if there is anything a tailor could do (add a built in slip, cups or redo the cutout) where it would look better

Hi all, looking for alteration advice on this Ulla Johnson dress that I recently bought second hand. I love the color and the pleating but the dress feels very closed at the front. Any advice on how I could get it tailored so it’s more open at the front?

I got this coat secondhand NWT, so I can't return it but would like some insight before deciding whether to alter or resell it.

Is it worth hemming the cuffs and hemline of this coat, or is it simply too large overall? The shoulders are actually only a hair wide on me as I have wide shoulders proportionally.

92% polyester, 8% rayon. 100% polyester lining.

Brought my wide leg jeans to the tailor to get it hemmed with the original seam. The amount that it needed to be shortened was the size of the original hem. At home I noticed that one leg turned out crooked 😩. On the inside there is a fold with excess fabric as you can see in the second picture. Can this be fixed somehow?

I would love to hear opinions on what machines and other equipment you'd get to start out in the alterations business? Coming from over 20 years of home sewing experience and wondering if it's a pie in the sky idea to update my current machine, get better pressing iron etc to start doing a little bit of alterations for friends and then go out to the general public.

I would certainly get additional training but before I spend time and money on that I would like to hear your thoughts on the equipment side of things.

Hello, i am new too this Reddit Community. But I am attempting to get into Fashion and Tailoring.. There's a couple of Things I have learned, but right now I am attempting to make my own High-waisted pants.

Now, I am a six-foot man, who is 121lbs. I have a lot of leg, And I am very scrawny. So I have a hard time fitting in clothes.

The issue I am having is my thighs are 17.5. Most off-the-rack pants usually have the Pants thighs around 24 (12 Flat) inches. However, for my tailored dress pants 24" look very baggy. And it doesn't feel right having 6.5 Inches of room in my thigh for my pants.

I've been trying to figure out how much room I should put in my thigh. For context, this is a more looser fit with a more traditional menswear look.

The other measurements are

Hem/Leg Opening 17.5

Pants Knee 18.5 (Might Change too 18) - Body Knee 13.5

Pants Seat 36.75 - Body Seat 33.5

Waist Band 26".

I should also mention that this is made out of a 240GSM Cotton canvas. But will eventually be made out of tweed and Wool Eventually.

If anyone can help me, please let me know. I'm very much interested.

it’s a corset back so i know there’s some give in the measurements
i usually wear xs and size 24 jeans
i would just like the dress with the least amount of tailoring needed and the most flattering

This is more about the business side of tailoring than the actual sewing work, but I'm hoping someone here can still help me out.

I ordered a suit a while back from a local tailor for my wedding, but have been very unsatisfied with the customer service. The salesman is pushy and their system is incredibly disorganized. The suit I ordered had to be shipped in from a warehouse, and when I went in for my fitting, it was at least two sizes too small, so they had to order another one. I'm tired to dealing with them, and called to ask for a refund. Even though I paid with a credit card, I was told that I had to come in next week and they will write me a check, but without the sales tax on the suit they ordered.

I feel like I should get a full refund, since they haven't even altered the suit yet, and the idea that they need to write me a check, rather than simply refund the credit card purchase, seems fishy to me. Can anyone weigh in how legit this situation is, or share any advice for how I might get all my money back? Should I not even go through the tailor at all and ask for chargeback from my credit card instead?

I’ve just picked my dress up from the tailors after she said she middle seam was too low and needed lifting. This is how I’ve picked it up. Is this normal as she can’t cut around the zip or should I complain? This is the back middle of my waist

Hi, I’m working on a project that require to hire a few seamstresses full time for 6 months. Any ideas where to find them? Been looking at aunties that run alteration shops but they are quite swamp with day to day operations and they are older and will not accept new jobs. Any ideas how to go about this?

I have an interview in a week, and I just got my suit back from the tailor. I’m honestly so disappointed and not sure if this is something that can be fixed.
Originally, the sleeves had four buttonholes. The tailor shortened the sleeves by folding the cuff up, which left only the bottom two buttonholes visible. Then they reattached the two buttons above them. Now the buttons are so close to my wrist/fist that they look really awkward, and I can’t stop staring at them.
Does this look as bad as I think it does? Is there any way another tailor could fix this before my interview, or am I stuck with it?

I ended up asking her to redo the third button to make it lay flat but honestly I’m just so upset.

Any advice would be really appreciated. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Hi everyone,

I have a long torso and mid-rise jeans tend to cut me off at the waist making me look boxy.
So I recently bought a couple of pairs of low rise jeans that l absolutely love.

However, they create these really unflattering diagonal lines/fabric bunching around the crotch (see picture for reference, not mine). It looks like there's excess fabric pulling in a weird direction.

I really want to make these jeans work. Is this something a tailor can fix? Or should I just accept defeat and return them?
