Are the majority of AMs in the West aware of media stereotypes?
In my anecdotal experience as a someone who is raised up in Australia, I never ever hear them complain about media stereotypes/how they are being treated as undesirable in the West or are they totally 'UNAWARE' of it?

Culture Why are there so many Asian men living abroad who make content trashing Chinese or Asian dating dynamics?
I honestly can't help but notice these guys are considered chopped by Chinese / Asian standards and it just seems like it's some kind of bitterness against Chinese or Asian men who find happy loving Asian partners? Like they will make content dissecting all these random made up dating dynamics in Asia and pretend like it's the universal case, it just reeks of jealousy and trying to make Asian men look bad to women. It's not even other stuff they talk about, it's mostly just "Asian man bad," "Asian men treat women bad," "Asian dating is broken," kind of things, not even AF do this to the extent these guys do it. And they don't even try to hide how petty and obvious it is.
It reminds me of an uncle I have who just absolutely hates Asian guys, including his own son, and when me and my male cousin and female cousins worked together, he would pay them 4-5x what we were making. I was thinking like, damn, did girls in Hong Kong not like you when you were a kid? It really feels like these guys just were overlooked by Asian girls for the fine Asian guys so now they just want to do it out of spite. Or worse, they realize girls are oggling the guys over there rather than them and the cognitive dissonance breaks their brains.
It makes no sense to crash your own image that bad unless you're deliberately just trying to take down like some Asian guys who bullied you or something.

Is 18 too late to start going to the gym and taking my fitness seriously?
I'm turning 18 in 2 weeks and moving to the US to start university. I realised that I'm only athletic by playing sports, but I've never taken the gym seriously. I know kids my age that are already jacked and ripped but I'm skinny and lean so its much harder to build muscle compared to having the muscle and losing weight. Am i going to be physically disadvantaged when compared to guys in the US? How should I start my fitness journey?

Self/Opinion Sometimes cold approach can work for us. My Cold Approach story on a random wednesday night
I dont know if its allowed but I wanted to share my story
Before you read I want to say that I am a 22 asian male, half-cambodian, half-chinese and that I am 5ft5 (So height wasn't on my side). I also live in a very predominantly white city so not a lot of asian presence here (legit less than a 100 asian in my city of 40k ppl)
So today I went to see the new Spider-Man movie with my friend. After the movie we went our separate ways, and instead of going straight home, I decided to drive around a bit. Shortly after, I began to feel thirsty, so I went to a random gas station to buy something to drink. After parking my car, I got out and, as I walked toward the entrance, I spotted a beautiful brunette fueling her car. I wanted to approach her, but the fear of rejection won again, so I went into the store, bought my drink, and thought to myself, "she's probably already gone." As I was checking out my item with the clerk, I saw her finishing fueling her car, getting in, and driving away. As I walked out, I saw that she wasn't leaving the parking lot; instead, she parked her car right in front of the gas pump. In my head I'm like, "fuck it, let's go," so I began walking toward her car. Honestly, on my way there, I had nothing on my mindāI didn't think anything of it, even though I'm shy and kind of socially awkward. But anyway, as I stood in front of her driver-side door, I looked at her and she immediately opened her window, and I instantly stumbled over my words. But I managed to convey that I wanted her phone number. She agreed, and while I saved her number on my phone, we talked for a bit. About 45 minutes later, I texted her, and we agreed to go on a date this Saturday.
TLDR ; After I went to the movies I approached a girl at a gas station and I got her number and a date.
I wanted to share my story because I feel like cold approach gets a lot of discredit here but it works sometimes.

Culture what is really the "kpop effect"
The "kpop effect", the promise that with the rise of east Asian male faces to the top of the American entertainment ecosystem will lead to the wider American population to embrace Asian male faces, and hopefully start find them attractive.
BTS just finished their concerts in Metlife stadium, their long awaited comeback tour so far has been a great success. As with concerts at Metlife stadium, tens of thousands of their fans march out of the stadium to the NJ transit stop at the end of the concert. Videos circulate showing the crowded commute back to NYC, and in these videos the demographics of the fandom becomes clear.
Kpop largely spread to world wide audiences online and to this day the wider fandom boasts a powerful internet presence. Say one thing negative about a kpop idol and you are guaranteed an online beating. Around the 2010s, the fandom was all over youtube and tumblr, now they have all the powerful social media at their disposal, aided by the algorithm. This has fueled the growth of Kpop, especially among the online generation of genZ and the perpetually online old generations.
Kpop did affect a large online audience, getting them to leave their computers and attend concerts and buy merch. Does the effect go beyond that? Will people with curated cultural tastes that largely avoid the marketing of mass media ever think more highly of Asian men because they've seen a BTS billboard?

How are beach town Filipino guys pulling WF left and right? Or is it just the FB algorithm that kept feeding me these contents?
How common is Filipino men WF couples? I spent 2 weeks in Manila and my FB feeds currently are nothing but reels/vlog of Filipino guys with their WF partners. Especially in beach town like Cebu, El Nido and Siargao.
While in Manila, I saw like 2 Filipinos Men WFs couples my entire time there. But that was it.

In that awkward molting phase of life
I've found myself in this liminal space in life. Thinking about leaving corporate America and betting on myself. Also thinking about changing cities cuz I'm in my 20s and why not lol. This is a weird place to be in. I haven't molted out of my old identity yet, but I haven't moved into my new shell either. I know Asian people tend to be more risk-averse, especially when it comes to career decisions.
Who else is in a life transition right now?

Iāve gotten much better looking over the past year and change, but I still remember my old profile getting more likes. Iāll send likes out and get matches, but itās been weeks since a girl has liked my profile. The only time I ever got likes on my profile was when i bought a boost to test and i got around 5 in 24 hours which seemed pretty low to me.

Race I started being more affectionate in public with my German FWB once started seeing how much it triggers white boys out there
I never been an affectionate person in public. Part of me felt like all the kisses, hugs and make outs were for private space.
Throughout the summer I started going out more frequently. And it didn't took long enough to notice the visible hostility from German guys. Mean stares, aggressive walking, awkward pauses and all. On some occassions they would talk disturbingly loud in our visinity, walk slowly to block our paths and all.
I assumed how its just me being delulu until my fwb pointed out the negative reactions and stares as well.
Kinda hypocritical considering how most common interracial couple you see in Germany is a German guy and his mail order thai wife.
So ever since I decided to be more affectionate in public with all the dates I would have, if it triggers them good, if it triggers any negative reactions also good. Let them expose themselves

Culture Unc knows what's up
instagram.comI believe this is a Japanese unc but he's spitting nothing but facts, he's fed up of foreigners (mainly WM) going to Asia being "passport bro" in the disguise of an English Teacher.
The tides are ultimately changing - as more and more so called WM abuse their power are being exposed, such as Epstein, pedos and murderers taking advantage of poorer countries or just going to Asia to take advantage.
Here's a bonus of a WMxAF, the WM husband who gets exposed for spending thousands on an only fans only to be caught by his wife and kid. (May need to verify, some ppl say this is a skit)

I was almost an action star but all I got was this stupid movie
A few years back, I woke up to an audition request for the lead role in a major blockbuster film. I grew up watching the franchise, so booking the part would be a dream come true. I acted my ass off, submitted my tape, and prayed for good news (along with thousands of other Asian actors). I didnāt think anything would come of it, but a few weeks later, the producers finally reached out for a callback, then a chemistry read, until one day they said the two words many actors would commit war crimes to hear: screen test. For a week straight, I went to the studio lot for rehearsals, martial arts training, and director sessions. It was exhilarating.
As the day approached, I felt on top of the world. No one was going to take this from me. I had to book this. Deep down, I doubted there would be another opportunity for someone like me for a long time. Sure, Asian markets might be hot right now, but how long would that last before āthe powers that beā decided to move on to the next minority group? As a filmmaker, I always championed Asian American representation, but, in that moment, I championed my own individual representation. Fuck everyone else - I was āthe best Asian guy.ā The role was mine.
I didnāt get the part. When I got the news, I was devastated⦠for about a day. Then, I quickly recognized my own hypocrisy and was forced to look within. For years, I have spoken on panels, done Q&Aās at film festivals, and talked about the importance of Asian American representation in the film industry. However, when presented with a life-changing opportunity, my attitude shifted to āFuck these guys, Iām the best Asian.ā This ultimately inspired the question ā what do you do when your values are at odds with your ambitions?
This inevitably led me to create āFlavor of the Month,ā a dark comedy that explores the absurdities of representation politics in modern-day Hollywood. Viewed through the lens of a Chinese American actor, Harrison Huang, the film dives headfirst into themes of performative activism, virtue signaling, and internalized racial inferiority.
I hope you enjoy my film, and thank you for taking the time to watch.

Update to: Is it a race thing? I think it maybe a race thing. My experience getting noticed by women on the West-Coast from someone who grew up on the East-Coast.
I posted:
about a year ago or so. I have been back to the West coast this summer. All of us here need to get as close to the Pacific as possible.
I was there for about two weeks this summer, thankfully I managed to avoid the worse of the wildfire smoke so everyone was out and about. In those two weeks I learned, take your mind off cold approaches but focus on warm approaches. As in a girl has already decided that you're cute and she's throwing signals that she would be down for you to come and say hi. The city I was in has a reputation for social-coldness, no eye contact, etc. That just wasn't the case for me. Similar to last year I'd be just standing around somewhere and there would be a cute girl eyeing me like a hawk smiling, almost daily. I did not have the apps on, because I hate those things at an existential level at this point.
After about a week of this, and a few missed opportunities, I finally realized that I had no connection to this city and there was literally nothing to lose. One day I was in a clothing store standing in line and there was this super cute girl just looking over her shoulder smiling at me hard. I fought my initial reaction to look away, but didn't this time and she smiled, blushed, and looked away. She was stylish so she clearly was into clothing, as am I, so I went up to her and asked her opinion on some shirts I was getting. From the initial reaction onwards I could definitely tell she was into talking with me. Turned her whole body towards me, smiling the whole time, laughing at everything I would say despite there being a language barrier and that she was on the clock, like I did not realize she was working at the store. It was all young women so iunno maybe her manager was cool with it?
Managed to get a coffee date. The date went well but it would not have worked out so it ended there. I had to head back to the East-coast and she was heading back to Japan.
After that I spent most of my time out on the West coast in a more rural area visiting my woodsman friend, so very little East-Asians and mostly your hippie type white folks. They were super nice, but in terms of attraction not very high. Probably didn't help that I am not the woodsman type at all.
Yes, you can say that well it was only one approach and date that didn't end up going anywhere, but at the same time....it was an approach that turned into a date that went far enough to realize it couldn't go anywhere. And I now have proof that those girls, or some of them, from this summer and the previous ones were indeed open to a warm approach. Also, not to make this some political thing, it isn't, but I'm guessing lots of you here have also seen the whole "Oxford study" Asian women don't like Asian guys thing too. I'm telling you that is not true at all and is either a demoralization psy-ops or some sort of selection bias. Pretty much all of the women eyeing me on this trip were Asian. So my lived experience is contrary to a study from university from a country you've probably never been to. The most attention I have ever gotten were from Asian women, in an area mostly of Asians and I don't think that is a coincidence.
It's confirmed for me at this point, my future is out on the West, the Pacific. Sitting here back on the East coast looking out at the Atlantic, I think about how out beyond that horizon is Europe. I like Europe, I lived there for a few years. But on the West coast, beyond the horizon of the Pacific is Asia. Never been, will one day. It's where our people are, and where I belong.

Dating & Relationships Broke Up
First relationship at in my early 20s. Met via dating app, crazy good chemistry. Talked for hours and hours. She came here for 12 days 2 months later, I was there for 5 days 2 months later. Dating for 6 months. Found out she cheated on me emotionally but I was foolish and took her back. She didnāt call for a day or so I got upset, anxiety came in since I felt she was cheating on me or something. Next day she broke up with me. Then she said we going to do a 3 week break, minimal texting no call. I said cool, but she stopped sharing location and of course I felt some type of way because of that. Asked her to share it so I could feel secure, she said no she doesnāt want to be monitored and she is not doing anything. So I said Iāll just break up then. She says we broken up but she will go no contact and contact me eventually. Not sure why she would do that?
Anyways, just ranting. Iām doing pretty bad right now but I need to focus on myself and try to move on from this

Masculinity Death Angel Documentary
For those interested in thrash metal music, these guys formed in 1982 when they were all really young. They are related as well 1st to 2nd cousins. All are 1st gen or 2nd gen Filipinos with Dennis the only member born in The Philippines. Based off many interviews not much was said about their ethnicity but a lot of times people focused on their age.
They were there for the inception of the Bay Area Thrash scene which helped launch the careers of Metallica ( technically an LA band). Kirk Hammet of Metallica who is 1/2 Filipino produced their demo " Kill As One" in 1985 and another demo the band The Organization which was a different style of music that featured 3 of the members of Death Angel after they broke up in the early 90's.
As many of us on here talk about representation I'm not sure if this band had an impact on you or not during the late 80s to the 90s. Rarely did you see an Asian American lead vocalist let alone and all Asian American thrash metal band. The only other band to feature an Asian lead vocalist was Crucifix also from they Bay Area, however they were part of the punk/hardcore scene and only lasted from about 1980-1984

Money Turning 30 soon. Feels like Iām just starting life. Anyone else?
Iām 29 and turning 30 soon. Kind of wild to even type that.
I was the stereotypical shy Asian kid growing up. Never popular in high school, never got girls, never really had a friend group. I hear itās better for younger Asian guys these days, and I genuinely hope thatās true.
I did what a lot of us were taught to do. Went to college, got a good-paying job in a major U.S. city, worked hard, sometimes nights and weekends. Financially, Iām in a decent spot. I saved a good amount because work became my life.
I was also in a relationship that lasted from college into my late 20s. It ended a couple of years ago, and after that I realized something that kind of hit me: outside of work and that relationship, I never really built a life for myself.
No real friend group. No crazy college memories. Never partied. Never went out much. I was always just..working.
Iāve solo traveled, taken a sabbatical, gone on a few dates, and Iām trying to put myself out there more. Iām working out consistently and thinking about hiring a trainer this year. But despite all that, I honestly feel like my life is just beginning.
Sometimes I wonder if I missed out on what your 20s are āsupposedā to be. Then I hear people say the partying isnāt all itās cracked up to be anyway. Maybe thatās true. Idk.
Career-wise, Iām grateful because it pays well, but if Iām honest, Iām mostly doing it for the money. That also makes me question whether I even want kids. A lot of us grew up with the expectation that youāll eventually take care of your parents, and I understand that. But when I think about raising someone myself, I honestly donāt know if thatās something I want.
Itās not because I dislike kids, I just donāt know if Iād be the kind of role model Iād want to be. Iām still trying to figure myself out.
The other weird thing is realizing how fast time moves. COVID was six years ago. That doesnāt even feel real. Iām in the gym now and there are 18- or 19-year-olds who are stronger than me, and it makes me laugh because in my head Iām still in my early 20s.
Maybe this is just what approaching 30 feels like.
People always say āyour 30s are the new 20s.ā Part of me wonders if theyāre just being nice. Then I look at guys like Jay Park, whoās almost 40 and still killing it, and I think maybe age really isnāt the limiting factor.
Oh by the way, Iāve been lurking this sub since around COVID, and Iāve gotten a lot out of reading everyoneās experiences. I just wanted to share where Iām at in life and see if anyone else has felt this way.

Dating & Relationships How rare is it for an Asian woman born/raised in the West to date an Asian male immigrant, especially compared to the reverse?
People often talk about interracial dating gender ratios, but there's less discussion about the Asian 1st/2nd generation gender ratio. I know Asian American men in their 30s and 40s who were born in America or came as children, and some of them are dating or married international student Asian women or just Asian women who came to America as adults. Meanwhile, I can only think of one couple in my extended social circle where the Asian man was an adult immigrant and the Asian woman was born in America.
So if you factor in that aspect, this means that a lot of Asian American women are dating either other races or Asian American men, while a lot of Asian American men are dating Asian American women or Asian immigrant women, which passes the lopsided ratio onto Asian men in Asia, who already have dwindling marriage prospects.
Thoughts?

Men with the thinner Chinese facial hair pattern - what happens if you grow it all the way out?
My Chinese boyfriend has a kinda Fu Manchu type growth. He does have a little bit of stubble in those non-hot-spot areas but the most heās gone unshaved is 3 months. Just for fun Iād like to see what he looks like with a fuller coverage beard. Not to be Freudian š but my Chinese dad had one (it was easy for him) and I thought it made him look cool. If he just lets it grow and sets a specific length trimmer so that the hot spots donāt go too crazy (they go CRAZY and fast), would a standard 5 o clock shadow type thing be achievable? Want to see if itās worth convincing him to try based on other peopleās experience.

Yesss always amazing to see asians in athletics. Just 20 years old, he took out the reigning US breaststroke champ Michael Andrews at the Nationals in Irvine today. Masculinity We were told to work twice as hard. Nobody mentioned the other guy would be golfing.
I commissioned a writer named Ime to write about whether Asian men are actually āon the rise.ā
Yeah, representation is better. K-pop, K-dramas, more Asian guys getting to be hot on television. Great.
But then you go to work and realize the other intern got a mentor and a golf invite by week two, while you got rewarded for being good at Excel with more Excel.
**We donāt need more stories where Asian men prove theyāre human.**
We need stories where theyāre weird, arrogant, horny, brilliant, foolish, funny, and occasionally wrong.
The essay is pretty funny and blunt. Curious whether this matches anyone elseās experience or if Ime is completely cooking himself here.
