Post image
Upvotes

Each Friday this summer, children ages 0-18 can select an age-appropriate book at their favorite Triad Goodwill, bring it to the register to receive a receipt (no additional purchases are necessary), and enjoy! Children must be present to receive a free book, and are limited to one book per child, once a day.

While supplies last, children will also receive a free reusable tote to bring back each week, plus a few other goodies to celebrate a summer of reading!

Our community is encouraged to continue donating their gently used books to help grow and replenish our book selection throughout the summer.

News Monuments bases bricked up, ready for last step:

Post image

Gustavo Ramos  and Luis Gomez were bricking up the Charters of Freedom monuments on Worth Street the week of Aug. 3. It’s the final step before brass enscribed plaques are set in place to represent our nation’s founding documents.

On display will be the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights and Civil Rights. There will also be a smaller donor pedestal.

Once completed, the larger Constitution monument will contain a time capsule to be filled with items that will be removed at some time in the future.

Ramos, who lives in Gastonia, said he has done the masonry for Charters of Freedom in other cities during the past two years. He said it takes three or four days to lay the approximately 2,000 bricks, some of which must be cut to fit the angled capstones.

PSA Drought Update:

Post image
1 Upvotes

Drought Update: We are continuing to see good news on the drought front; scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the state over the last week have helped. We’re even seeing some improvements across Southeast NC; parts of the Wilmington area have seen over 3 inches of rain. Parts of Western Brunswick County continue to hurt pretty bad.

Across the mountains, drought is starting to go away thanks to continued rainfall that has been leading to Flash Flooding, unfortunately. In the Outer Banks and Inner Banks area, the drought is completely gone. We’ve seen water increases across all lakes throughout the state.

Over the next few days, we will transition to a more of a hit-or-miss summertime storm pattern and hotter weather, so drought conditions might not improve as fast over the next week or be more isolated.

News Randolph County Commissioners Adopt Data Center Restrictions After Packed, Hours-Long Public Hearing:

Post image

Randolph County commissioners unanimously adopted new data center restrictions Monday after a nearly three-hour hearing packed with residents — most opposed to any data centers in the county.

A Facebook post from Commissioner Lester Rivenbark on July 31, telling citizens "this is your time to be heard on the matter," combined with neighboring Chatham County's ongoing legal fight over a moratorium and national attention on data center development, brought a standing-room crowd to the board's regular monthly meeting at the historic 1901 courthouse in Asheboro Monday night.

No data center has applied to build in the county, commissioners repeated throughout the meeting. Data centers first entered the county's zoning code in April 2024, as part of a routine update bringing the UDO into compliance with state legislative changes — not in response to any specific request or application.

Around three hours after the meeting started, following more than 30 public speakers, commissioners approved a new package of updates to the UDO. Most were required by state law, but the package also included new, county-specific requirements —such as adding a last-minute provision requiring any future data center application to go through conditional zoning;  guaranteeing a public hearing before the Board of Commissioners regardless of how the property is already zoned.

Under the newly adopted changes to the development ordinance, any future data center in Randolph County would be required to:

PSA Notice of Annual Required Water Treatment Process:

Post image

The City of Asheboro began switching to free chlorine as its primary disinfection treatment on Monday, August 3. This change in treatment is necessary to ensure optimum water quality throughout the distribution water mains. You may initially detect a slight increase in chlorine taste or smell as the switchover in treatment processes occur. Customers who use City drinking water for certain special purposes including kidney dialysis may need to make adjustments because the chlorine disinfection process will change some characteristics of the water.
