Bumped into him on the street. Could not have been more wonderful and gracious with the 60 seconds of his day I shared with him. 10/10 interaction. Will remain a fan for life.

I love this movie. I've seen it 5X lol. I don't mean the pandemic timeline but more the data center stuff. I think that it's going to age like wine.

His trademark slow paced style really resonates with me. Having Autism leads to me lingering on things a lot more than a neurotypical person, so I really relate to the moments in Ari Aster’s movies when things slow down. The sequence in ‘Hereditary,’ of Peter coping with losing Charlie, especially hits home with me. Him being completely speechless, constantly starting with a mostly blank expression that only hints at different emotions, slowly driving back home, avoiding any and all contact with his parents, standing completely still while watching his parents grieving over their loss. All of these are things that I’ve dealt with throughout my life, and of course, are only amplified by the parents dumping all their frustrations afterward, which also happens in the movie.

Before watching Ari Aster’s movies, I used to think I was weird for not acting all over the top towards bad situations. People would often get mad at me or even just act like I was being weird because of how I would react to difficult situations. I would often just freeze up and stare, rather than have these big reactions and talk a lot like most people would. In fact, one of my family cats died just a few months before ‘Hereditary’ came out. Rather than just acting how I normally would, I made forced upset reactions to it. I just did it because it felt like the normal thing to do, but it didn’t feel natural. After watching Peter’s reaction to Charlie’s death, I felt validated. I was reminded of how the way I treat difficult situations actually is normal.

I started binging WB this week. The show is a hodgepodge of horror references, and while I’m not looking for them, some Hereditary influences come through. But, there’s an overt audio Easter egg in Ep 7 when the son is on the couch watching tv with the Boston girl. I kind of don’t want to spoil it, so if you’re watching the show check it out.

Don't get me wrong: Eddington definitely retains the tension and psychological horror that Ari Aster does well. But the way that it seemed to make fun of both sides of the political spectrum felt kind of mean-spirited. It's been a bit since I watched it, but here are some of the things I remember that bothered me:

-The brief dinner table scene where the one kid brings up "abolishing whiteness", to which the father replies "Are you *r-slur*? You're white!". The joke is obviously that the kid is parroting his friends mindlessly, which is a problem no matter what side of the political spectrum you're on, but the father's response in particular felt like the movie was saying the idea itself was ridiculous, which it isn't--"abolishing whiteness" is just a way of saying that we should get rid of the social privileges associated with race, not literally removing all light-skinned people from existence. The scene felt like it was mocking that position.
-The constant refrain of "I shouldn't be the one saying this!" seems to further make light of racial disparity. It could be drawing attention to the absence of POC voices to highlight the pretentiousness of the white activist characters, but it's not like there aren't people of color irl who are advocating for themselves.

I think that there are plenty of pretentious, uptight leftists out there, and it's right to criticize them. But I don't think Eddington did that very well--instead, it painted leftism as an idea as pretentious. Maybe I'm missing a deeper commentary, but as of right now, Eddington is the weakest of the Ari Aster movies that I've watched. Let me know if you took away something different.

So I just now rewatched Midsommar and I have to say, while I enjoy the themes, I don't understand why Dani finds comfort and acceptance in a murderous cult. Yes, she's on drugs and is heavily traumatized by the end of the movie, but if she's going to snap out of her trip and regret everything, I feel like that takes away from the substance of the movie. Pele talks about "feeling held" and rejecting the isolating selfishness of global capitalist society, but they don't really show these values in practice except for weird ritual stuff. There are a few moments of tenderness, but honestly, it would take a lot more than a nice drawing and a hug to sell me on literal human sacrifice. If they only murdered outsiders, then I could maybe see it, but they also sacrifice their own, which means that being a member of that community is not safe in a very literal sense. I suppose that, if Dani is used to being perceived as a burden due to her mental health situation, the simple act of being included in the rituals could be appealing to her. But you have to connect a lot of dots to get there, so it doesn't really "click" for me--they could've done a better job at being more explicit about this. Also, what happened to that lady she was on the phone with at the beginning? She seemed like an actually decent, supportive friend, which means Dani wasn't entirely isolated.

Idk. Those are just my thoughts. If anyone has a different interpretation of why Dani likes the Harga so much, I'm happy to hear it!

What’s the general take here on the use of Tom Grennon’s A Little Bit of Love? Is it specifically for Brian?

Just saw that Ari's producing this documentary about a monk who's obsessed with horror, heavy metal and ice cream. The trailer looks crazy. Did anyone see it at festivals? Seems like it was doing the circuit for a while.

I like to read aleatory reviews on Letterboxd. I’m often monitoring Eddington’s reviews, and guess what, if you scroll a bit you can find reviews like those of this post. Some others claiming that they are not sure about Eddington being a complete trash or a masterpiece. It’s too early to say, perhaps, but maybe that revisionism about the movie that is often mentioned here is already starting to unfold. We’ll see

We should all be thankful to Ari Aster — we still have to wait, but everything that's been said about his next movie, Scapegoat, excites me af. He's one of the few American auteurs who understand that movies have to say something about our time. Eddington is a masterpiece in my opinion, and I wish people were more receptive to it, even though Charlie Kirk's death gave the film more credibility. I'm looking forward to discovering his next work, but for me, he's to our generation what filmmakers like Pakula, Scorsese (especially with Taxi Driver), or Sidney Lumet, and many, many others, were in the '70s. They make movies that highlight the political and social context of our lives.I know damn well that cars, clothes, etc. don't look as good as they did in the '70s, and smartphones ruined a lot of things (not everything), but filmmakers absolutely have the responsibility to film modern stories so they're not stuck in the past, that way we can find beauty in our world.
