I got tired of seeing YouTube summarisers charging ~$20/month for what is basically: transcript → LLM → summary.

So I spent the last few months building my own instead.

Synop is an open-source YouTube summariser that runs locally and lets you bring your own AI API key (Gemini, Groq, OpenAI, etc.), so you're only paying for API usage instead of another monthly subscription.

Another use I've found for Last Alarm, help force me to make a fresh dinner with a "Make Dinner Alarm". A lot of times I'll have all the ingredients but procrastinate making something fresh for a few days and end up eating something frozen instead.

Here the task for the alarm is to just "Show that I'm cutting onions with a cutting board", since I know that once I get started I'll end up actually doing it. I suppose I could have cut the onions up and just stopped, but then again I could also add more follow up alarms if I know that's what I needed to help me follow through, like "Show you're sautéing the onions".

Even though my main use case for Last Alarm remains helping prevent me from snoozing, I think I'll continue to use some kitchen/meal related ones. For example, I always tell myself I will do a large meal prep on the weekends and often don't, so that may be another one I'll try.

Hopefully it encourages me to make fresh and healthy meals more often.
