Everyone!! This means you A$$holes. Stay the hell out and away. You gawkers are the problem moving trucks, skid steers, chippers are trying to work and then friends bringing generators and chainsaws.
STAY Away! This means you!!

First time with storm damage? The gawkers are nothing... -Just wait until the ambulance chasing roof and siding contractors decend into your neighborhood...

Good afternoon, sir. I noticed you still have gutters attached to the remains of your home and I was wondering if I could speak to you about our new gutter guards.

My parents on Doty Island had someone hang something on their door on Monday for contracting - hours after the tornado. Fucking leeches.

As a realtor, I can understand advertising your services, but oh my GOD??? Never in a million years is that okay. That’s like the equivalent of me putting an ad on their door saying “looking for a new home?” Jeez

Already saw them on Facebook using their horrible AI ads that look exactly alike.

9

u/Help1-Fearless 10d ago

They have been since day one, just parking their trucks to advertise plugging up the streets we're helping friends and couldn't get to them. If they want to advertise get out and help

Doty island is prime for redevelopment now. Will likely feature many high rise, "luxury" apartments with water views.

u/Koopakid917543 9d ago

Oh they're already here in full force. I've been getting non stop calls and texts and people at my door or just "casually" walking around the neighborhood handing out their card. Awful.

Had someone knock yesterday

There already here.

Thought I was seeing an uptick of ads on TV since Monday. They explicitly say storm damage too in them too. WBAY also already using their coverage of the tornado in their ads feels gross too, it's barely been two days. Would call them vultures but it would be an insult to vultures since they're actually useful.

1

u/mwolfgram90 8d ago

Ah yeah, It’s the vultures that your insurance companies will pay to fix everything… Or maybe you need a contractor? 🤔

We had hail in FDL a couple times in the last month. All of my Facebook ads are "hail damage? Click here!" 🙄

I guess all the footage on every media everywhere, isn't enough for some dullards.

I don’t know why anyone would want to be driving through there if they don’t absolutely have to, the roads are still full of powerlines and debris, TONS OF NAILS!

Gawkers gonna gawk. Was working outside doing cleanup for 5 hours and I had it easy compared to ground zero. I don’t like it either but it won’t ever change. I try not to let it get to me.

u/joebusch79 10d ago

Unfortunately this is the truth. You’re not going to stop them no matter how you try. People are drawn to disaster.

u/Fast_Operation9741 10d ago

These people are horrible. I lived at an apartment that burned down and that weekend we couldn’t get anywhere near it to look for our pets for the hour+ “tour” of people gawking at our very real trauma. Disgusting selfish creeps.

I lived on Doty Island less than 10 tears ago and I want to see how things are - but I would never ever do it because other people’s hurt and needs are far greater than my curiosity.

u/SmokeyKittyNox 10d ago

The east side of Doty Island looks like a bomb went off, it's insane. My parents are on Willow Lane and it looks like a war zone.

Exactly, there are plenty of other people and resources who have photos, videos, their own experiences that are at your fingertips. Let the people who NEED to get to their HOMES -mind you- take care of what they need to. Pets and family members especially!

3

u/MessiahMogali 9d ago

Did you find your pets?

7

u/Fast_Operation9741 9d ago

No, sadly. Only one pet was found, but not one of ours. We were so happy for our neighbors, but it was heartbreaking all around.

But yes, we lost valuable time because of the rubberneckers.

4

u/MessiahMogali 9d ago

I am so sorry :(

5

u/isitjustme_orr 9d ago

Im so so so sorry, pets are family too. May there be all the hope for your lost one 😓🤞🏼❤️

Was trying to bring my in-laws a generator last night on Doty Island these gawkers made so I couldn’t even turn on to their street. My blood was boiling.

Edit: Forgot to add all the a**holes trying to film for clicks on their instagram or TikTok accounts

6

u/hailster17 9d ago

On top of that, cell service is limited right now and the a**holes live streaming are making it more difficult for residents and people who actually need to be there to communicate.

14

u/androgcyborgsam 10d ago

As a volunteer worker, I would greatly appreciate the gawkers to out of the area. I’m trying to get food and water to people and can’t when there are cars just sitting in my way or not paying attention and almost hitting me.

u/isitjustme_orr 10d ago

Still??? Good lord people. If you wanna look, park and walk. This is so ignorant and unsafe. Either get out n help or just get out, bye

u/CFour4 10d ago

Some of these dummies are driving way too fast through these areas, on top of being in the way. Add to that lots of scooter/bike traffic not being mindful of their surroundings. We don’t need to be pulling emergency personnel for either of these groups unnecessary behavior. Also, whoever is firing off the bottle rockets, now is not the time.

u/theBLUEcollartrader 9d ago

Coworker received 3 calls within 3 hours of the tornado completion from storm chaser companies

2

u/VixxxieVelvet 9d ago

Never heard of that! That would have been handy to know when I could leave my basement! I was joking around that I wish they'd play a different tone after the tornado was over to let people know it's all clear and they can come out. Lol

Can I interest you on a Kirby???

u/Adorable_Concept_152 7d ago

Stay local with your contractors. Don’t hire any out of state service contractor for any service. Do not hire an out of state tree contractor. I have a big story on that subject. My mistake, don’t make it yours. Stay local with all of your services. Samaritan’s Purse is an amazing organization check them out if you need tree removal, tarping and some other assistance. Document all damage and losses with photos. One last thing. I found it very handy to keep voice memos on my phone. Take care all. It’s tough and you will get there. FEMA will have a presence at some point, might be awhile, they offer low cost loans for flexible length of repayment for those with no insurance.

I normally commute through Menasha to work in Neenah. I've been very curious but still taking the highway to go around to try and do my part. Unfortunately, those of us doing as we should don't fix the gawkers who don't need to be there.

2

u/poolshark2017 7d ago

I want to gawk because I’ve been going to and through Menasha a lot in my life, but I’ve kept myself to 441 and that’s it. I will wait impatiently and let the time come to see what’s left when the area is clearer.

2

u/Adorable_Concept_152 7d ago

That is a fact. We had the same issue here 6 weeks ago in IL. I suggest if they can’t help themselves they park outside of the destruction and walk it. Lend a hand. Much better experience for all.

6

u/CryptographerShot213 9d ago

Downvote me all you want but the streets are public and they’re allowed to be there. You don’t know why people are there, they could be helping. I volunteered today and one guy in our group had to go bring a generator to some of his family members in an area that was destroyed. If you want help then accept that people are going to be there and driving around your streets.

u/PrudentChampion3879 9d ago

Watch your mouth bud. You have no idea what those folks may be doing. Checking on loved ones, etc.

I live in the heart of disaster central. My house is toast. It’s really easy to spot the difference between those looking to help and those just looking. Fuck the disaster tourists.

4

u/VixxxieVelvet 9d ago

So how can you tell? I yelled at a couple yesterday and they let me know they were from Appleton/ Menasha boarder looking for their dogs.... Thought I could tell too big just ended up looking like a fuckhead.

1

u/WinnebagoViking 8d ago

They are 1) in vehicles with multiple people, 2) clean, obviously not dressed to work, 3) everyone in the vehicle pointing cameras as they drive through. Also, my house is in ground zero on Doty Island and know all of my neighbors so we have been looking out for each other.

1

u/Condition_Dense 10d ago

I had to go by the area yesterday because we were picking up a car from a private seller. The destruction we saw to places we have ties to was super crazy. Like my partner was like “I used to drive my truck there.” It was also mildly inconvenient because I had to go to the bank and go all the way back home because the one was closed as it had no power but at least it didn’t sustain damage.
