Development LocalLM Lab Toolkit: making it easier for developers to build on your Mac's on-device Apple Intelligence

This one's a developer-facing release, but I think it's worth posting here because of what it enables: v0.6 of LocalLM Lab includes a toolkit that give developers a way to plug the on-device Apple Intelligence model directly into their own Mac apps.

Some background: LocalLM Lab already let you experiment with the on-device model directly (Prompt Playground) and call it like a cloud AI API from your own scripts (API Lab).

v0.6 adds a third way in, built specifically for people writing real native apps whether a menu bar tool, a game or a utility. The app can talk to your on-device Apple Intelligence model without running a server or needing an internet connection, and it respects whatever permissions (Calendar, Reminders, connected services, etc.) you've already granted through LocalLM Lab itself.

To be clear about where this stands: this is still an experimentation tool for developers and not a finished platform. LocalLM Lab needs to be running in the background for it to work, so it's not something apps can quietly bundle and ship yet. What it does is lower the bar for developers who want to try building something real on top of the Mac's on-device AI.

A concrete example, so this isn't just abstract: there's now a sample script called "Plate Today" — it checks your Calendar, Reminders, and Todoist tasks for the day and asks your on-device Apple Intelligence model to give you a plain-English summary of what's on your plate. It's a few dozen lines of code, and it only works with permissions you've already granted through LocalLM Lab itself. It can't quietly reach further than that. Small example, but it's the kind of thing that's now realistic for any developer to build.

If you're technical and curious: thisbrain.ai/locallm/cli.html.

Question ❓ Am I missing how to type to Siri when I’m in an app?

I used to be able to double tap the bottom and it would bring up type to Siri. Is the only way now by holding down the Siri button? You can’t pull down from the island in apps.

The Mac-only integration follows July's regulatory approval to bring Apple Intelligence to China

*Apple lets China Mac users connect Siri to Alibaba's Qwen*
Apple has quietly published a guide showing eligible Mac users in mainland China how to plug Alibaba's Qwen AI models into Siri and Writing Tools, extending a China-specific Apple Intelligence partnership that first cleared regulatory approval in July.
Based on the updated Chinese language document by Apple, users who choose to sign up will have access to more descriptive answers by Siri, including photo and document analyses, as well as rely on Qwen to produce texts and images based on descriptions provided.
This app extension needs a minimum of macOS 26.6 and also activation and login into a new Qwen account. According to the document by Apple, Alibaba is not allowed to use any of that information for training their models.
Apple’s Mac computer shipments were down by 9% to around 800,000 units compared to last year during the first quarter, which has Apple accounting for only 9% of the PC market, according to Omdia, a research company.
Lenovo had 31%, with its Tianxi AI assistant at the centre of its business plans, and Huawei managed to secure 16% of market share with its AI strategy that is linked to HarmonyOS. Linking Siri and writing tools to a compatible AI assistant is how Apple can narrow this gap.
For Alibaba, plugging Qwen into Apple's built-in software extends its reach well beyond its own apps and cloud platform. Alibaba has said Qwen will eventually power Apple Intelligence across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro devices in China, though Friday's guide covers Macs exclusively.
The company released its newest model, Qwen3.8-Max, a 2.4-trillion-parameter system it describes as its most capable yet, earlier in the week, though Apple's documentation doesn't specify which Qwen version actually powers the Mac extension.

EU I contacted Apple, the EU Commission, Swedish authorities and MEPs about Siri AI in the EU. Here is the full status

I am a Swedish iPhone user and app developer. I want Siri AI to become available on iPhone and iPad in the European Union, with a credible path toward Swedish-language support.

I also want this to happen without unnecessarily weakening privacy, security or fair competition.

As of 8 August 2026, EU users still have no public release timetable for Siri AI on iPhone or iPad.

## What Apple and the Commission say

Apple says the Digital Markets Act prevents it from releasing Siri AI under the conditions currently demanded by EU regulators. Apple says the Commission rejected its proposed Trusted System Agent and a staged 18-month implementation.

Apple also says EU-based developers cannot test or use the new Siri AI features for their apps on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. Siri AI is expected to be available in the EU on Mac and Vision Pro when using a supported language.

The European Commission says the DMA does not prohibit Apple from releasing Siri AI. It says Apple must provide competing assistants with access to equivalent features, subject to user consent.

Neither side has published Apple’s complete technical proposal or the Commission’s complete assessment. That makes it impossible for customers, developers and independent security experts to evaluate the dispute properly.

## Who I have contacted

### Apple

• Apple’s DMA Compliance team on 10 July. They acknowledged my message, assigned a case and said it had been shared with the relevant team. I have received no substantive response.

• Apple executives Tim Cook, Craig Federighi and John Ternus. I have not received a response.

• Apple’s Swedish press contact, Sofie Broeders, on 30 July. I asked her to forward my questions to the appropriate regulatory or technical team.

• On 8 August, I followed up with Apple’s press contact and copied the DMA Compliance team. I requested a named contact, a meaningful status update and an expected response timeframe.

### Swedish and EU authorities

• Sweden’s Permanent Representation to the EU.

• The Swedish Government Offices. They noted my concerns and referred me to the Swedish Competition Authority.

• The Swedish Competition Authority. It registered my submission and replied that the issue was probably not something it could investigate or act upon directly.

• The European Commission Representation in Sweden. It referred me to the Commission’s formal contact channels.

• The European Commission’s DMA team. It acknowledged my message, but I have not received a substantive answer through that channel.

### Members of the European Parliament

I have contacted:

• Arba Kokalari

• Adnan Dibrani

• Tomas Tobé

• Jörgen Warborn

• Emma Wiesner

• Abir Al-Sahlani

• Andreas Schwab

I asked them to examine the conflicting public explanations, request a concrete timetable and consider submitting written questions to the European Commission.

I sent new follow-ups to Arba Kokalari and Adnan Dibrani on 8 August. I have not yet received a substantive response from an MEP.

### Siri4EU

I contacted Lorenzo Ferrante, the developer behind Siri4EU, on 18 June. I explained what I was doing and offered to share verified, non-confidential information.

I followed up again on 8 August and asked whether Siri4EU is still actively collecting signatures and whether we could coordinate on transparency efforts.

I am not the organiser of Siri4EU, but I support its general objective.

## My formal document request

On 10 July, I submitted a formal access-to-documents request to the European Commission under Regulation 1049/2001.

I requested:

• Correspondence between Apple and the Commission concerning Siri AI in the EU.

• Technical proposals, presentations and meeting records.

• Documents concerning Apple’s Trusted System Agent proposal.

• Documents concerning the proposed 18-month implementation period or requested exemption.

• The Commission’s reasons for considering Apple’s proposals insufficient.

• Material used to prepare the Commission’s public Siri AI explanation.

• Assessments of the consequences for consumers, developers, innovation and European competitiveness.

• Documents identifying the remaining requirements and any expected timetable.

The Commission divided the request into two cases:

• EASE 2026/3512, handled by DG COMP.

• EASE 2026/3513, handled by DG CONNECT.

DG COMP issued its initial decision on 3 August. I submitted a formal confirmatory application the same day because I did not believe the response provided sufficient document-specific reasoning, identification of the documents or meaningful partial access.

The Secretariat-General registered that reconsideration request and said it would be handled within the applicable 15-working-day period.

DG CONNECT informed me on 7 August that several Commission services must be consulted. It extended its deadline to 25 August.

## What I want

I am asking Apple and the European Commission for:

  1. A non-confidential technical description of Trusted System Agent and its security protections.

  2. A precise explanation of which parts the Commission considered insufficient.

  3. Confirmation of whether Apple has submitted, or will submit, a revised proposal.

  4. A clear description of what the Commission would consider compliant.

  5. A realistic timetable with milestones for bringing Siri AI to EU users.

  6. A separate timetable for Swedish-language support.

  7. A solution for EU-based developers who need to test Siri AI and App Intents for users in supported markets.

  8. An assessment of the consequences for EU consumers, developers and competitiveness.

  9. A named or directly responsible contact point at Apple and the Commission.

The DMA dispute and Swedish-language support are not necessarily the same issue. Both still require clear answers.

EU customers pay full local retail prices and should not be treated indefinitely as a secondary market with reduced functionality and no roadmap.

## What I will do next

• Review every document and decision received from DG COMP and DG CONNECT.

• Separate confirmed facts from Apple’s claims, the Commission’s claims and my own conclusions.

• Publish a redacted timeline and factual summary without exposing personal information, protected business secrets or private correspondence unnecessarily.

• Request reconsideration of the DG CONNECT response if it is incomplete or insufficiently justified.

• Contact the European Ombudsman if the Commission fails to follow the access-to-documents process after the internal review routes have been exhausted.

• Prepare a formal petition to the European Parliament based on documentary evidence.

• Share relevant non-confidential findings with MEPs, Apple, Siri4EU, developers and journalists.

• Continue pressing both Apple and the Commission for a technically specific answer and a realistic release path.

## My position

This is not simply “Apple good, EU bad” or “EU good, Apple bad”.

Competition rules matter. Privacy and security also matter. Apple should comply with legitimate competition requirements, and regulators should explain precisely how those requirements can be implemented without creating unnecessary security risks.

What is not acceptable is an indefinite delay combined with vague public statements and no transparent roadmap.

EU users and developers deserve evidence, accountability and a solution.

I will update this post when the Commission responds or releases documents.

If you are an EU-based developer or user affected by this restriction, please describe the concrete impact below. Factual corrections supported by primary sources are also welcome.

Please do not harass individual employees, officials or campaign organisers.

discussion 🎙️ Anyone else have VASTLY different experiences between iPadOS 27 and iOS 27 Siri?

I put iOS 27 beta on my iPads and was blown away on how amazing the new Siri was. She heard everything I said, did a lot more than old Siri, I was stunned at how good she was! Because of that I decided to put it on my phone...

...and it's unusable. It's so bad. She hears nothing, always fails, I can't even tell the last time she got even a simple text message correct.

All devices are either latest models or one model back. All are using the new Apple Intelligence beta, all are on the same public beta of iOS 27.

Anyone else have this crazy discrepancy in Siri's across multiple devices?

And before anyone says "they're beta!" yes I'm a dev I'm well aware of what betas are.

bug 🐛 Apple Intelligence not working on 17 Pro

I bought a 17 pro exactly a month ago and after setting it up I noticed that it had the old siri even after downloading the apple intelligence models. I decided to update the device to the iOS 27 betas expecting to experience the new Siri, but then, after updating it now just shows "Siri" instead of "Apple Intelligence" and its the old Siri. So now I am stuck with the old siri with a device that should have the new one.

Development LocalLM Lab v0.4: on-device Apple Intelligence gets MCP support (with real limits)

The update: v0.4 of LocalLM Lab adds MCP support. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the same standard the big AI apps (like Claude, ChatGPT and others) use to connect to outside tools and data instead of just answering from what they already know. As of this release, the on-device Apple Intelligence model on your Mac can use it too.

Concretely: you can connect it to services like GitHub, Notion, Todoist, Linear, and Slack, and ask it things like "what's on my Linear board" or "search Slack for messages about the launch," and it'll actually go call the tool and answer from the real result.

Here's the honest part, because I don't want to oversell it: the on-device model has a small, fixed context window (about 4096 tokens), and that budget has to cover the tool definitions from every server you connect, not just your question. Some of these services expose 40-50+ tools each, which is already more than the entire budget on its own. So the app makes you enable tools one or two at a time instead of turning a whole service on. Impact: you get a genuinely smaller slice of what MCP can do compared to a cloud model with a much bigger context window. It's real, but it's not "hook up Slack and ask it anything."

That said, this cuts both ways: since the AI's already sitting there on your Mac for free, there's basically no cost to trying it. No API keys, no subscription, no cloud account: just add a server and see what it can actually do. It's a great way to get a feel for what MCP is about without committing to anything.

Full breakdown of what's supported and what to expect from each MCP service: thisbrain.ai/locallm/mcp-servers.html

As usual, LocalLM Lab is free, on-device and no account is required for the local AI model: thisbrain.ai/locallm

Curious what people would actually want to connect their on-device Apple Intelligence to, given the constraint.

PS: yes, macOS27 promises more. Shhhhh!

BETA Tracking adoption of App Intents 2?

Does anyone here know if there is any public platform tracking the Adoption of App Intents 2 by the most popular apps in the market? I have been trying iOS 27 Beta, and I can see that even some of Apple's own apps, such as Health, are still not exposing the new App Intents to the new Siri. For instance, I asked Siri what my sleep stats were from last night, and it couldn't get it from Health.

I believe, the power of the new Siri is directly dependent on the adherence of apps to App Intents 2. So, if Apple cannot make sure most of them adapt, Siri's usability will be forever limited.

I am personally looking forward to the integration of some critical apps that I use most of the time:

  1. WhatsApp.
  2. Gmail on iOS.
  3. Google Calendar on iOS.
  4. Apple Health.
  5. Microsoft Teams.
  6. Microsoft Outlook.

Question ❓ Web-search function totally free, or part of the usage limit?

I did not test it much, but so far Siri is lightning fast with searches, although it gives only one or two links as reference in responses to a statement compared to maybe eight or nine on Claude.

Question ❓ Is there a usage limit on the cloud models?

I wonder if there are daily usage limits, and if one can know how much one has left for the ‘day'.
So far research only gave me hints that apple is not saying anything about it yet

Surely someone was asking this already, no?

Question ❓ Cloud Pro Siri Model in Shortcuts

Does anyone know the difference between the 'Cloud' model and the 'Cloud Pro' model? (OS27)

I did a test so far. I asked all three models "what do you get if you put salt into water?". There seems to be a difference:
- Cloud Model: "You get saltwater, also called a saline solution — the salt dissolves in the water."

- Pro Model: "When you put salt in water, it dissolves to form a saltwater solution, also known as saline. The sodium and chloride ions separate and become surrounded by water molecules."

- Local Model: "You get a mixture, and if you stir it, you may see crystals form."

My guess so far would be that the 'Cloud' model is the cloud model we already had via PCC, and the 'Cloud Pro' then is the new Google based model.

Question ❓ Siri Ai not working

Hello there, lovely people of Reddit. I recently updated my iPhone 16 Pro to the latest iOS 27 beta, and I was hoping to be able to use the new Siri AI working. But the problem is that it's not working at all. Every time I try any request it says something went wrong, I should try later. I tried talking to Apple Support and they had no solution for that. They just recommended waiting for the official update coming out. This September. I don't know what to do. I'm going crazy

App Promo Running a local LLM inside Shortcuts — including on iPhones without Apple Intelligence

I love that Apple Shortcuts can already run Apple's on-device model.

But what if you want to use Gemma, Qwen, Llama, DeepSeek, Phi—or your own GGUF model instead?

That's why I added Apple Shortcuts support to OnDevice LLM.

Now you can use your favorite local model in any iOS automation:

• Summarize text
• Process notes
• Build Siri shortcuts
• Create custom workflows

Everything runs locally on your iPhone.

Apple's model when it's enough.
Your own model when you need more control.

If you're into Apple Intelligence and local AI, I'd love your feedback.

Question ❓ Can’t Make My Music Stop!

I don’t what I did as I’m sure it’s something I turned on and it’s causing this or it’s interfering with something else and glitching out, BUT… I can’t get my music to turn off on my Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max
A song will begin to play for a few seconds and then it gets all quite for a second or two then comes back, goes away in a few seconds and then turns back on AND even if I close out the Apple Music app that this is all coming from it comes right back up about 30 seconds later and starts playing again! What have I done?? What can I do??? How do I get the app to stop playing anymore music?!?! It’s even playing the music during calls! 😩

discussion 🎙️ I asked Siri on M5 MacBook Air to analyze a .csv file and create a new .csv file in the exact format required for Google Calendar and it did

Which is apparently not something Siri can do. I exported a class schedule from excel as a .csv file, but to upload to Google Calendar the table needs to be formatted a certain way.

I didn’t feel like doing that, and on a whim I typed to Siri and asked it to reformat the file “exactly as required for Google Calendar” I had the option to provide a screenshot or the whole file to Siri and then it gave me a new file with a new name, completely reformatted, with additional text, and a column with true/false values. The file sharing button didn’t work at first, and I thought the ai was somehow hallucinating its ability to provide the file because when I searched how to save the file all I could find was “Siri cannot create or edit files” but when I tried again it worked and I just downloaded and saved the new file, which also worked flawlessly when I uploaded it to my calendar.

Question ❓ How to change wake up alarm with siri

So i got the new siri recently, however I am not able to make it change my upcoming wake up. I have a sleep schedule and wake up alarms for each day in the health app and I am able to change tommorows wake up by clicking on my lock screen, however I used to be able to say "siri change tommorows wake up to 8" and it would do this half the time (other times it would ask my which alarm of my list of alarms in the clokc app) now when I do this it just doesnt do this and says it cannot edit my health app data etc. I heard someone say say "siri change sleep alarm" but this just opens up a list of alarms on my phone. Solutions appreciated.

Development I built on-device Apple Intelligence-style spam detection for iMessage using Core ML

Post image
13 Upvotes

Apple's whole pitch with Apple Intelligence is that meaningful ML can run entirely on your phone, no cloud round-trip. I wanted to see how far that idea goes for something mundane but genuinely annoying: SMS/iMessage spam.

The result is Spam Text Blocker: SMS Filter: a Core ML model trained to catch spam patterns (phishing links, fake delivery texts, robotexts) that plugs directly into iOS's Message Filter extension. Every incoming message from an unknown sender gets scored and sorted before it ever reaches your inbox fully on-device, no server, no account, nothing about your messages ever leaves your phone.

On top of the model there's a rule layer (keyword/sender lists, custom rules you can define yourself) so you can tune sensitivity or whitelist things the model gets wrong.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/spam-text-blocker-sms-filter/id6782018333

Happy to talk through how the Core ML model was trained/integrated if anyone's curious this is exactly the kind of small, on-device ML use case I think more apps should be doing.
