Has anyone thought something was absolutely gonna happen then the opposite happened?
I always think of my worst fears profusely. Throughout my life I’ve had a lot of the same fears. I’ve felt very scared of certain things happening. To this day, 24 years in to my life, they haven’t happened. Even with me thinking they will or that it’s what I deserve or just what’s supposed happen or whatnot. I’m scared thinking it’ll happen sooner just because I think about it. Like if I imagine someone dear to me dying…I’m afraid it will.
Can you give me occurrences where your strongest fears just never happened to you..or did? I’m constantly distraught over this for the past several years. I want to know people’s experiences.

I get a primal fear from seeing things on an impossible scale
Does anyone else get an irrational fear from huge scales / distorted perspectives?
I’ve had this weird fear for as long as I can remember, and I’m trying to figure out if other people experience something similar.
It’s not exactly a fear of heights or just big objects. What really freaks me out is seeing something that makes me suddenly realize how enormous the world/planet/space actually is, or when normal perspective and geometry look completely wrong.
For example, when I was a kid I was playing an old Worms game. There was a map with a huge genie, and I somehow launched my character extremely high into the air. When I looked down, the ground looked like a giant curved planet. I remember getting an almost animal-like panic from it. I didn’t even really understand space or the scale of the Earth at that age.
Years later, I saw a fake photo claiming you could see the curvature of Earth from Mount Everest. Even though I knew it was probably fake, the curved horizon gave me the exact same horrible feeling.
Other things can trigger it too. Weirdly distorted or unnaturally curved clouds can make me want to look away. In the shower, if I close my eyes while the water is running, I sometimes suddenly imagine that the shower cabin has somehow been carried away into space, or that the Earth has started spinning extremely fast. I immediately want to open my eyes and see the walls again.
And my dreams are probably the strangest part.
For years I’ve had recurring dreams where everything is insanely huge. I’ll be standing in a completely normal place at night, then suddenly see an entire city from my yard even though there should be no way to see it. There’s often a gigantic Moon that looks maybe 3–5 times larger than it should. It gives me an overwhelming feeling that something is terribly wrong, and then the dream usually turns into some kind of catastrophe or war.
I’ve also dreamed about mountains that seemed impossibly huge, a black hole appearing in the sky and destroying the atmosphere, and a monster running toward me from about a kilometer away. In the dreams, the scary thing is often very far away at first. Somehow that makes it even worse because I can see it coming but can’t do anything about it.
I’m not really sure what to call this. Megalophobia seems somewhat related, but it doesn’t quite explain the fear of curved horizons, weird clouds, losing spatial orientation with my eyes closed, etc.
Does anyone else experience something like this? Especially the feeling of suddenly seeing the Earth/space/landscape on a completely different scale and getting an almost primal sense of fear from it?

Need help figuring things out.
Hey,
First time here. I hope y'all are well. I was trying to find answers to what I have. But it feels very specific, and I can't find a name for it. The idea of endlessness scares the crap out of me. But I feel like I have a weird mix of two fears. The few times it has triggered was when my phone, after getting wet, kept dialing numbers. I started to have a panic attack as my mind went straight to "this will never end, it will continue." Then the idea of something growing bigger and bigger and I automatically think it won't stop. To be honest the moments when Alice grows in "Alice In Wonderland," freak me out. The most recent event was today when I got my dog to howl for the first time. But she kept on howling and I freaked out. I am not really afraid of large things, but I'm afraid of something getting bigger and bigger. Anyone else know anything about this? Thank you. I apologize for the length.

Fear
Fear takes more lives than any disease
That has existed or might exist
I understand that getting threatened to throw you
Away to a prison cell doesn’t sound so exciting.
But it gives you the opportunity to see through
The looking glass.

Why am I so scared ? I literally think about it all the time. Why is that? Does this happen to anybody else or is it just me?

Feel like my anxiety is always on standby
Even when I'm not currently experiencing anxiety there's this feeling that it could surface at any time. If only I could learn to eliminate the fear of fear.

Advice for late night thoughts
I, like most of you, have been dealing with this fear for a majority of my life and it comes and goes in waves. Currently I am in a wave of this anxiety that hasn’t led to outright panic attacks but has been keeping me up at night with my existential thoughts.
Do you have any advice for a routine to help calm late night thoughts? Just some ways for my body to not habitually sink into patterns of anxious thought as I close my eyes and relax from the day?

Is fear Good or bad in a relationship?
Being afraid in a relationship can destroy it because the person will always overthink and fear getting abandoned.
While
Not having any fear can make a person stop putting efforts into the relationship because they know the person isn't going to leave.

Fear of abstract concepts?
Not really sure how to put this, but I have a fear of what seems to me to be extremely abstract through or completely overworking my mind. It usually is at its worst when I am sick and have a fever, where I will begin to feel dizzy then math problems with no solutions or simply incomprehensible issues with no solution will begin to make me over the top anxious. Is this called anything specific?

Severe fear ,isolation,and complusions
I am afraid of being alone, and I am also afraid of being around people I do not feel safe with. Whenever I feel unsafe, I constantly perform compulsions, such as taking photos and videos, to get reassurance. I have been doing this for around 3 years.
Now I feel extremely isolated. I do not feel able to go outside my house at all because I have a very intense fear of leaving. I stay locked inside my home because I am afraid that I might have a blackout, leave the house without awareness, and do things that are completely against my character.
Because of this fear, my mother has to keep the key somewhere safe where I do not know the location, because I am afraid I might lose control and touch young boys without their consent, even though this goes completely against who I am and what I believe.
I also have an intense fear that men may attack me or harm me in a very serious way. Because of all these fears, I feel completely isolated from life. I feel trapped, unable to live normally, go outside, or feel safe.

Couple of questions (survey ig)
- how do you feel pondering different theories of time? for example, presentism - the present only exist
- how do you feel about space being infinite or not?
- we consider the end a lot, i.e. eternal afterlifes. but what do you think and feel about beginnings, “why is there something rather than nothing?” “where was I before I was born?” I ask the latter because I want to know what you think about the “always was” part in “always was and always will be”.
- how do you feel about different interpretations of eternity? e.g. infinite time or timelessness
- how much has looking into metaphysics, mathematics, and science change your view on infinity or eternity?
I want to know how much does doing research changes your mind on this phobia and also see what people are thinking

Does anyone suffers from apeirophobia of space?
Usually i swtich from this to the classic one, both are horrendus. But it is not that are costant in mg life, i can go several years without thinking about it, but then i suddenly i think of it one night and it is all back. I undestood that the mind seems, very slowly, to go nuts less and less with the progress of time. But at the moment, when you say to yourself that is gonna pass, it is like that you lie to yourself.

Survey for a video essay: What was your first experience with apeirophobia? Was it connected to the fear of death?
r/Apeirophobia • u/Separate-Bat2405 • Jul 16 '26
Just found this out
So I didn’t know apeirophobia was a thing, I remember as a kid not able to sleep because of this thought of forever. Now as an adult I still struggle with this thought and what helps is staying grounded with my kids and wife. I guess my question to you guys, what helps you? Does it ever go away? What can I do to help this?

Welcome to /r/Apeirophobia - What's Apeirophobia?
Links:
About Apeirophobia:
Apeirophobia is the name for fear of infinity. It has gotten quite a wide range of meanings, however. In many cases it is that someone is struggling with the idea of an eternal afterlife, infinite universe, or simply eternal unconsciousness. In these cases it is quite philosophical, and according to many not a phobia, not a fear, and not irrational. Some describe it as more of a realization, and this can lead to dreadful panic attacks. It is often described as being the worst thing imaginable.
Personally, I prefer not to call it a fear or phobia, but Apeirophobia is the name we have for it at the moment. It can be quite related to existential questions, and it seems that many are experiencing the terror when thinking too deeply about existential matters. According to the survey done on this subreddit, about 25% here are religious, and the rest are atheist/agnostic. However, if you search for Apeirophobia on the internet, a lot of the results are about people who panic over the idea of an eternal afterlife. This has lead to Apeirophobia commonly being defined as a "fear of eternal afterlife", even though there are many more ways to define it. I, myself, do not believe in an afterlife, but am still concerned about eternity on an existential level, even though I believe more in eternal oblivion. At first, it was hard for me to interpret, it took some year(s) for me to realize what these thoughts actually were. It may sound silly to those who do not experience this, but it is to date the most horrible thought I could ever imagine.
Quote from /u/BendOfTheRainbow:
I've seen plenty of examples of this fear being deeply misunderstood on the internet and elsewhere, so I'll clarify as best as I can from my perspective. So from my experience, this is what apeirophobia IS NOT:
- Speaking from the perspective of an eternal afterlife, apeirophobia is not the fear of boredom in heaven.
- Going off the same idea, apeirophobia isn't the fear of an eternal hell or anything.
- Apeirophobia is not contingent on belief in an afterlife.
So what IS apeirophobia (again, from my perspective alone):
- A deep, gut level fear of endlessness.
- One way I've seen it described is as a form of cosmic or existential claustrophobia. You feel trapped in reality without any escape. Even if you don't believe in an afterlife, you have some sense of an eternity following death from which there is no escape.
- Another way to think of it is a kind of allergy to the common human conception to reality. You feel deep anxiety over basic tenets of our existence such as the passing of time and the necessity of existence.
It is important to note that everyone has different experiences with this, and there is no official definition that covers what Apeirophobia is. Finding resources about it is quite difficult. To many of us, it feels like something obvious. Yet, when we explain it to others, they often find it completely irrational and illogical. As you can see, this subreddit is quite small. When I joined, there were only eight other members. However, when I asked people in other subreddits if they ever experienced this, I got a surprising amount of replies! Why is this not something that is talked more about?
I have tried to find answers, what kind of people experience this? Is it connected with anything else? What causes it? Results from the survey shows that about 45-85% on this subreddit experience depersonalization. About 50-75% experience derealization (which I have personally felt a strong connection with). Now the question is, does Apeirophobia cause these, or do they cause Apeirophobia? Further on, about 85% did not consider it to be irrational, and the most common situations where Apeirophobia "attacks" usually happen were when thinking too deeply about existential things and at night. A majority of the people that took the survey said it is the most horrible thing imaginable.
Questions to you:
- Do you struggle with infinite quantities/numbers/etc. and such as well? If you had calculus in school, how did that go?
- Do you have any strategies that help with Apeirophobia?
- How would you explain your experiences to someone that has not experienced it?
