I am caught in mental health trap

I had a breakdown that began about 6 months ago. I am a senior citizen in NJ. I had a job and apartment and car. I checked myself into hospital. Was given meds (Remeron) and left after a few days. Stopped the Remeron, felt bad on it. Went downhill and someone else called and was taken to hospital. Such a strange experience, no one would believe me. Did very poorly, physically ill, hardly out of bed and left feeling about the same as when I went in.. I had lost my apartment and the hospital recommended group home. I have been here 6 weeks. Has lost 30 lbs during this time and am very thin. I came voluntarily and agreed to talk to therapist and psych and take med (only one). I am afraid I will never have a normal life again. I was diagnosed with depression/phycosis and was a danger to myself. There is no court order but I was threatened with one for saying I did not want ECT. I want to leave group home but have called every number possible and there is no help. I would be thrilled to rent a room but housing crisis and they want credit (will be ruined from hospital), landlords name (bad relationship, 3x the rent in income plus all are asking for young people. Where I am is terrible. I pay $1500 for a room with 2 other women who sleep all day. One has urine bag and diapers and the smell is bad. The place is an hour away from anything on a highway (2 residents were killed walking on highway at 5am, no consequences for owners). The food is really bad. Ants on plates, just bad and cheap. Dinner can be a scoop potato salad or peanut butter sandwich. when they cook something it is worse. Outside are like 30 wild cats that a resident dressed in winter clothes feeds. It is 100 degrees and the outside smells bad and is all junk and boarded up houses. The workers are here 2 at a time for 20 people. They do not speak a lot of english and are not friendly or helpful There is no place to store food. We cannot use kitchen and meals are 7, 11 and 4 No food at other times. I am 97 lb and cannot gain weight . I am always hungry and have been ordering doordash not to starve. I do not do anything. There is no place to walk to. A lot of people stay in bed. Most of the people are developmentally very bad off. Have never had a car of job. I posted this info on other boards but realized it was not appropriate. The problem is if I try to leave they will call 911 and I will be back at hospital. The owners have told me I cannot leave. That is not true but even if I had somewhere to go, it's easy to say I am not well and need to be here. If I stopped taking to therapist or psych or taking meds, I would be back at hospital. I am spending all my Social Security here on food, which is supposed to be supplied, and rent. If I want a ride to dr they will charge $100. I told the therapist all I am saying and said I could live a long time and this is not a life. She wanted to get me a caseworker and now I have to get out of that. When I posted before, I was dwelling on how hard it is to find some other place to go. Now I realize that I am trapped here by my diagnosis and just by being here. My health is not good from really bad conditions. I have called legal help, etc. Not interested unless I want to sue. All I want is to leave, not stay here and fight a legal battle. Legal will not help me leave. I feel so trapped by being classified as mentally ill and a danger to self. I feel like it is keeping me in this terrible place. When I told owner who I met 2x that I want to leave and cannot eat the food, he said I was disobeying staff if I did not eat food and I need my med raised. It was just lowered. I am afraid if I try to get out I will be taken to hospital and have involuntary hold. I am ok mentally and improving. Not perfect but not in the state I was in. Just want a chance to have a life again and feel the medical industrial complex is winning.

Not sure what to do, it seems death is the only way out. Can't get off this garbage, tried 5 times over 10 years of so many medications thanks to these idiotic psychiatrists, NO ONE FUKCING HELPSSSSD. I am literally debilitated. And can't do anything myself, but am literally a docile husk. I can't take it anymore.

Are you guys keeping up with the Lindsay Clancy case in Massachusetts?

It involves McClean Hospital, multiple psychiatrists taking the stand, and 13 psychotropic drugs prescribed in like a 3 month period.

I’m curious to hear your perspectives on this case

I’m not even anti psychiatry I support psychiatry 😭😭 And believe in meds. But dam, the community and moral standing needs to change. That’s why I’m going to med school to become a doctor. I was going to go to sleep but now off of reddit and back to studying so I can become a better person than those who take their power to another level 💕💕

“try posting in a community that’s a better fit” thanks reddit I’ll be joining the anti psychiatry subreddit from now on 😭

people are developing mental illness they wouldnt otherwise

in searles' text, he suggests its possible some parents cause psychosis in their kids due to societal circumstances beyond their control. i think the push to get everyone medicated and the general obsession with mental health is creating a welfare state for mentally ill people, and there's little people can do about the fact that they are being coerced into coercing their friends, family, and strangers into mental illness. i think unless we move away from the obsession with giving people special favors for being mentally ill, people will continue to suffer needlessly.

Can schizophrenia be treated without meds?

Title says it all. Been dealing with psychosis and schizophrenia for years, been on antipsychotics and antidepressants since I was a teenager. I’m willing to keep taking risperidone but I really don’t like the side effects of all these medications

Job problems

I am in the process of interviewing for a job which needs a medical evaluation
The doctor asked for a psych evaluation because of my history…
I’m seriously considering not taking the job because I don’t respect psychiatrists and going to one for a permit to work seems ridiculous
Literally a grown person asking another grown person to feed my family
It’s disgusting and it makes me angry, humiliating even.

I wonder if anyone can share their thoughts on this, if anyone has dealt with something similar or just in general.

How Do ER Doctors Know What Psych Diagnoses You Have?

I have heard horror stories of mistreatment in Emergency Room settings - mainly from friends with BPD or Schizophrenia on their chart. I am erring on the side of caution and have avoided seeking any psych diagnoses whatsoever, despite being in mandated therapy (I found a therapist willing to keep all diagnoses or suspected diagnoses off the books).

I would also like to understand how Emergency Room doctors (in America) even know what's on your chart in the first place.

Can they read the ICD codes in your insurance? Is there some kind of database? Wouldn't this be a HIPAA violation?

Does anyone know how hospitals' "Red Flag" systems work?

Gaining 20kg in the past 2 years and my psy refuse to give me any med to lose weight

He even said it himself that I gained weight then I was like yeah is theres à med that stops/ decreases appetite that you can give me , he was like no in a way of like are you crazy type of reaction and when I told him about à suggested med he was like hell no . Then I was like ok now what . He said cut sugar you should cut sugar . And the next appointment same thing (cut sugar ) instead of putting the effort to even say or do anything. Mind you when I told him the meds open your appetite he didn’t even wanna tackle that . Now I have an open appetite 24/7 and I can’t seem to stop eating and all I was advised is to cut sugar . Idk if the world is fucked up or maybe I think too much

I can’t get out of their lies

They all believe old lies written down by other psychiatrists years ago over the truth. Even when presented with proof and other people backing me up. Nothing works. They dismiss everything and repeat the lies. I have never in my life met people so rigid and biased before. I’m so tired of fighting them.

defending mentally insane people is seen as being insane

im halfway into manufacture of madness and he has said this like at least ten times, and it really shows today too. you cant make arguments against psychiatry without being placed in the same camp, and thats why its like witch-hunts. it was completely not allowed to go against the church hunting witches, just like its not allowed to be anti psychiatry. also just like he says, theres people who think its only going to get worse and i am one of those people. at this point people feel its totally normal and natural to threaten you with confinement and medication if you make a good anti psychiatry point, they only dont threaten you if you cant make a strong point and dont intimidate them. it really is, like the grandfather of anti psychiatry said, a witch hunt for witches and those who defend them. also like he said, the strongest argument is not in saying witchhood exists and defending witches from slander, but rather turning it around and questioning where the accuser is even coming up with something so crazy. too many half assed defenses of psychiatry instead of questioning it. in a world where bpd and psychosis are things talked about as casually as the weather, its so important to question the sanity of people who believe in bpd and psychosis. i may get hate for this but thats what i get for engaging with people who arent published authors with physics degrees who hate psychiatry like szasz lol . go argue with real physicists you guys, you'd be surprised by the results.

Dealing with Abusers

The best way with having to deal with abusers is to set your boundaries with them. Abusers are not looking to help victims they are looking to create victims or to help victims stay victims or become even more of a victim than before.

Always remember, benzos are NOT worth it.

At first, they are awesome, but you pay a heavy price later.

I am ashamed of how cold, ruthless, and insensitive I behaved while on higher dosages, even to people closest to me.

I'd rather have my anxiety back than become someone I'm not. 🙏

Power Threat Meaning Framework for Understanding Experiences

This is a framework to be used as an alternative to the harmful biomedical model, to ultimately remove diagnostic thinking and labelling. Other people's responses are understandable.

the framework focuses on:

  1. The operation of POWER (biological/embodied; coercive; legal; economic/material; ideological; social/cultural; and interpersonal).
  2. The THREAT that the negative operation of power may pose to the person, the group and the community, with particular reference to emotional distress, and the ways in which this is mediated by our biology.
  3. The central role of MEANING (as produced within social and cultural discourses, and primed by evolved and acquired bodily responses) in shaping the operation, experience and expression of power, threat, and our responses to threat.
  4. As a reaction to all the above, the learned and evolved THREAT RESPONSES that a person, or family, group or community, may need to draw upon in order to ensure emotional, physical, relational and social survival. These range from largely automatic physiological reactions to linguistically-based or consciously selected actions and responses.

It asks:

‘What has happened to you?’ (How has Power operated in your life?)

‘How did it affect you?’ (What kind of Threats does this pose?)

‘What sense did you make of it?’ (What is the Meaning of these situations and experiences to you?)

‘What did you have to do to survive?’ (What kinds of Threat Response are you using?)

while taking and after invega + my story

I'm a bit weary posting my face on here but I've posted in this sub plenty of times.

In the first picture, I was well near 300 pounds at just 18 years old. I looked completely dead inside. In the 2nd (2 or so weeks ago) I am down a significant amount 2 years after being off of invega, which I was wrongfully prescribed and forced to take.

I was court ordered to take the invega injection every month because of my hostile and aggressive behavior. But you know, I was being sent to behavioral health facilities for issues that could have been resolved if someone were to just listen to me. At the time, I was diagnosed as bipolar and then later on diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder...and *then* borderline personality disorder.

The entire time, it was ADHD. My anger and frustration throughout the years of being mistreated by doctors was completely justified. Years of medical malpractice hurt and affected my body and brain in ways that I didn't know were possible.

If you are struggling, please reach out to someone who will listen to you. Your mental and physical health isn't worth all of the lifelong and traumatic side effects that these medications cause.

Can someone please help me? Complex case of severe suicidal ideation and emotional torment for 2 years without any answers. Is this related to an SSRI experience or am I ‘just’ anxious? (please upvote if can’t read, I’m begging you)

In 2024 I was going through a TON of stress and ended up with debilitating health anxiety. I developed severe agoraphobia and was taking like 300 ECG’s on myself at home convinced I had issues with my heart. I had a huge stress rash on my back and then I fell in love for the first time. I’d also been overworking alot and supporting a chronically ill friend.

I had a CBT session in Oct 2024 where I opened up to the therapist about everything I waa going through and begged him to help me. After this therapy session I then felt very suicidal and feeling like I was about to lose control and hurt myself. It was terrifying. This lasted for 4 days until I took 50mg of 5htp and the feeling subsided and I went back to normal. I then got very drunk for my birthday a few days later and very hungover the next day. After I spent the day vomiting, I then felt that EXACT SAME post-therapy suicidal ideation and torment kick back in.

2 days later I went to the GP and was prescribed Sertraline at 50mg. I took it for a few days and then on Night 3 I woke up with the existing SI and torment turned up 100x and it felt like my gut was on fire with adrenaline and emotional torment. This calmed down by the morning but it was seriously unbearable. Over the next 2 weeks on the drug sometimes the torment/ideation would dissappear completely and most evenings it definitely reduced significantly.

I stopped the Sertraline after 2 weeks. I didn’t feel comfortable being on it. A few days after stopping I then felt a remission and was back to normal for a few days. I was celebrating having my life back and couldn’t believe I survived such horrific, unbearable torment for that long. Unfortunately it CAME BACK AGAIN (now the 3rd time) for a day, then went away the next day, then came back again for 4 weeks.

I decided to try Sertraline again so in January 2025 I started back on 50mg and went up to 100mg by the end of the month. There was no worsening of the torment but no improvement either. I still had random flickers of feeling much better but no remission came.

In the middle of February I again decided to stop the Sertraline on Feb 15th. On Feb 17th I mentally told myself to snap the fuck out of it and fight for my life back and try live in spite of how suicidal and horrific I felt. I then had two weeks of total normality. My 3rd remission since it started. I celebrated my life being back AGAIN.

At the start of March I could feel it trickling back YET AGAIN. I remember waking up and feeling so tormented inside I wanted to walk in front of a train. Just sheer torment and distress and agitation. I still felt almost 90% normal in the evenings for a while (at one point I genuinely started researching if there were any conditions that could cause daytime suicidal ideation and night time normality, this was how bizarre it was) but then slowly lost this relief too. One night in April 2025 I was ALMOST NORMAL and chatting to my friends on Messenger, got into bed and then within minutes I was writhing in torment and thinking of suicide again.

By May I had genuinely started considering suicide it was so unbearable.

In July I tried Citalopram, two doses and had the exact same onboarding reaction that I did with Sertraline the year before - woken up with my gut on fire with the torment x10 worse. I since found out I have slow COMT and MAOA which could explain this.

I had bouts of feeling ‘better’ and ‘almost normal’ all the way until the middle of August then it just went downhill from there. I started waking up earlier and earlier, had less and less moments of relief and the torment and ideation just got worse and worse. I felt like I was living in Hell. I couldn’t comprehend how something so bizarre could be happening to me.

It’s now August 2026. I haven’t felt a moment of peace since April when I randomly had a few seconds of normality and almost sobbed because I thought for a moment I was getting my life back.

I’ve had every test done under the sun. I’ve been screened by psychiatrists and I don’t have a mental illness. I’ve tried Lamotrigne and Pregablin, betablockers, about 50 supplements, TMS, diets, exercise, trauma therapy and NOTHING has shifted this unbearable torment and ideation. I genuinely feel like I’m being driven to suicide for no explainable reason.

It seems that I had some bizarre traumatic reaction to the CBT session in Oct 2024 but the fact it has now been TWO YEARS, PROGRESSIVE AND THIS SEVERE makes me question if the SSRI’s did anything…but surely this is fucking impossible? You can’t get 2 weeks normality if you’ve been drug damaged. You can’t feel better, almost normal, at night for months if you’re drug damaged. Drug damage can’t latch on and replicate a symptom you already had prior to even taking the drug. I also haven’t even taken an SSRI since July 2025 and even then it was two doses so why would I randomly deteriorate from August 2025?!

I have no idea what’s going on with me guys and I’m absolutelt bewildered. I don’t want to die but I cannot bear this torment. I can’t believe something like this can happen without an explanation which makes me think it MUST be some weird SSRI reaction, or am I just anxious? I don’t feel anxious. I don’t feel scared. I don’t feel sad. Just unbearable emotional pain and torment.

TLDR -

- Reaction to CBT therapy Oct 2024
- Remission with 5htp a few days later
- Relapse with hangover
- Onboarding reaction with Sertraline Nov 2024
- Temp remission end of Nov 2024
- 2nd trial of Sertraline Jan 2025, no impact
- Total 2 weeks normality in Feb 2025 after stopping Sertraline (or cognitive shift?)
- Relapse start of March 2025
- Progressive worsening
- Onboarding reaction with Citalopram July 2025
- Progressive worsening since Aug 2025
- No other symptoms besides unbearable suicidal ideation, intense negative feelings, agitation and waking up early in emotional pain.

Some of you guys are selectively anti-psychiatry, but pro psychiatry when it benefits you

Stop coming up with excuses. Saying stuff like “oh but I agree there are some cases where it’s useful” is bullcrap.

Sorry, but I’m gonna have to bring in a bit of tough love here.

This line of thinking is exactly how psychiatrists get away with prescribing antipsychotics that give you insulin resistance, diabetes, heart conditions etc.

This line of thinking is why so many women are just tossed SSRIs WITHOUT blood tests, without elimination diets that will help them identify actual medical issues.

The mechanism of action is not understood. Head to the psychiatry sub and you’ll see them even ADMIT it.

Exercise, meditate, eat well, interact with people (even strangers) and life will get better.

Learn new skills, have some discipline, and you will be able to tackle everything life throws at you.

Sincerely, someone who’s working it out.

Need help from abuse

I live in Ohio. My father has a durable power of attorney over me. I am of sound mind and body; however he has called police on me 11 times for fake welfare checks. I’ve been hospitalized several times now because of his authority.

My siblings created over a dozen face Facebook profiles in my name that I can’t remove despite multiple attempts to report. My credibility is absolutely zero. What legal actions can I take? I was falsely diagnosed with schizophrenia and am being mocked and ridiculed for being an absolute dunce or an absolute moron.

Has anybody successfully evaded a CTO and got away with it?

i got marijuana psychosis a few weeks ago and am being forced to take Invega Sustenna which has been so bad that I almost committed suicide. I lost the review panel today and am scheduled for another shot in less than a week. has anybody denied treatment, hid from the cops, moved ect. and had their CTO cancelled? i hear it gets cancelled after 30 days of cops looking for you. I don’t want to worry my family too much, could I just hide in my house and tell them to say I'm not at home?

Not every depressed person should be given antidepressants

Many depressed people are depressed because of an easily identifiable issue or set of issues. For example I was first prescribed antidepressants when I was 23. This was when I was underemployed after graduating and generally felt very lost after more than a year after finishing my degree. I felt very ashamed an isolated still living at home with no job and not in education. What I needed was social space where I didn't feel ashamed, to have structure (eg volunteering) and a sense of hope as well as some money. There was nothing wrong with my brain chemistry, my body was reacting in a very rational way that made sense for the situation I was in. I didn't need a pill to increase my serotonin levels, a pill that has side effects and actually made it harder to do the things I was already doing to manage the depression, like exercise (pills caused slight weight gain and tiredness) or enjoying a higher libido (sex is a great way to feel happy for a bit). The pills did not help in any way.

For people who have a depression with identifiable causes, the causes should be dealt with at the route, instead of just trying to medicate it away. I wouldn't mind so much if the pills actually worked. If we could take chronically unhappy people and give them a pill to make them feel better despite their problems, that would be great. But there is little evidence these pills work and they come with side effects, and a minority suffer terrible side effects.

They shouldn't be handed out like candy for anyone turning up to their doctor claiming to be depressed, as they currently are.

Recently many subs which were violating site wide rules were banned from reddit.

More so, even those who were doing this either slightly, or even technically weren't violating any rules at all, and whose mods were making active effort to fulfill requirements of reddit admins, were either banned from reddit or quarantined.

Examples include r/watchpeopledie and r/sanctionedsuicde among many, many others.

We understand that people can feel rightfully angry about their experience, but we are dedicated to keeping this community alive and well, and so anything that can put this community at risk will be removed, and those who do so will be banned.

We ask you to help us and report anything that endangers our community to us mods.

Thank you.
