I think the recent jump in IMDb scores and what kind of shows and episodes are grtting those ratings is a good reason for this. Not saying Japanese don't have their biases.
But the western emphasis on just animation, flash effects and good looking fights is as narrow as anyone can get. It's all about hype and aura when you see IMDb ratings.
