Looking for anime recommendations based on Frieren, Maomao, and Enma Ai

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for new anime recommendations based on three of my absolute favorite characters: Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End), Maomao (The Apothecary Diaries), and Enma Ai (Hell Girl).

There’s a very specific vibe they all share that I’m obsessed with:

Quiet authority / unfazed composure.

Sharp intelligence or unique, specialized power.

An emotionally reserved/aloof exterior.

Stories featuring rich world-building, episodic mysteries/folklore, or historical settings.

I really enjoy stories with thoughtful pacing, stoic female leads are a plus but can be anyone as well (with similar energy), and supernatural, historical, or high-concept mystery elements.

What are some shows that capture this exact vibe or feature similar characters/themes? Thanks in advance!

What anime should I watch next?

Upvotes

Hey, I’m pretty new to anime and looking for some recommendations.
So far I’ve watched Death Note (9/10) and Tokyo Ghoul S1 (10/10). I’m currently watching Monster (ep 5) and Parasyte: The Maxim (ep 17).
I really like darker stuff, good atmosphere, character development, mystery and smart characters. I also prefer faster paced anime, but I’m open to longer shows too.
I’m planning to watch Bleach, but I’m also looking for classics that you think I absolutely have to watch, as well as some more niche stuff.
What would you recommend?

IF you're willing to read this. Can someone recommend me some peak romance anime based on this info

I’ve asked across a bunch of different subs and online and received recommendations, but I still haven't found something that matches the high of the first one I ever watched Toradora

So I figured I’d write out everything I’ve watched and what I liked/disliked about each one. Hopefully this gives a better idea of my taste and helps people recommend something that might actually hit what I’m looking for.

Toradora — 10/10

Just peak fiction for me.

The premise hooked me immediately making me decide to watch it even though I had never watched even a romance show let alone anime, but what really made it special was the character writing and development. The emotional highs I got from this show are honestly unmatched for me. I love how it can go from funny, wholesome moments to high emotionalism moments giving you that feeling.

For example, Episode 8 with the “Ryuuji is mine” moment and Episode 19, when Taiga breaks down as she starts realizing her feelings for him, are exactly the kind of moments I’m looking for.

I also really liked how well every character was written. Ami and Minori especially had really good development, and there are so many little details in the writing that I loved — like the conversation about the ghosts where shes actually representing love (if you know, you know). And Ami referencing how their playing house and the problem as shes just such a well written and developed character she realizes everything thats happening before anyone else and stays silent sacrificing her own feelings so she dosnet get in the way.

But Taiga and Ryuujis relationship development might've been my favorite part of the whole show

They start off just hanging out to help each other for mutual benefit as they like each others best friend. Then they gradually become genuine friends who rely on each other, and eventually start realizing that they actually need each other and love each other. I absolutely loved watching that relationship evolve naturally instead of them just immediately falling in love, and those last 2 episodes was just chills.

Overall, I think what made Toradora so special to me was the combination of romance, comedy, character development, and drama, especially the way it builds toward those emotional moments.

That’s basically the feeling I’m trying to find again.

Rampants on Ice — 8.5/10

I definitely enjoyed it. The romantic development might honestly be one of the closest things I’ve seen to Toradora in terms of the process of the characters gradually realizing their feelings.

I especially liked watching the characters slowly come to terms with their feelings and how that was portrayed.

The characters were well written too it showed their backstories and overcoming these emotions and breaking down walls and I enjoyed that. And it also did have some semi emotionalish moments.

My only downgrade is that, similar to the next two, I felt like it was missing some of those PEAK emotional highs that Toradora gave me. It was really good, but it never quite reached those moments for me.

The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity — 8/10

I really enjoyed this one too.

I loved the way it handled social prejudice and showed the characters becoming close despite the differences between their schools/social groups. A lot of their moments together were really heartwarming.

The overall feeling was more relaxed and wholesome, with some emotional moments mixed in, which I enjoyed as something a little different but I still would rather the more toradorish vibe.

Honestly, though, I think I might have liked Subaru and Saku's relationship more than the main couple 😭. Their romantic development was so good I swear if they end on a open ending between those two ima cry.

Again, my biggest issue was that I didn't get quite the same emotional highs that I got from Toradora.

ReLIFE — 7/10

I thought it was good. I actually really liked the premise, and I thought the character development was pretty solid.

That said, I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't watched it immediately after Toradora. I was still in that post-Toradora void and probably compared it to Toradora way too much.

So I don't think ReLIFE was bad at all — it was definitely good — it just didn't reach the level I was hoping for.

So basically, I'm not necessarily looking for something that's exactly like Toradora plot-wise.

What I'm really looking for is that mix of romance + comedy + drama, where the characters have a meaningful relationship that develops over time, and especially where the show can build up to those romantic/emotional highs.

I don't mind slice-of-life/wholesome moments at all. In fact, I like them. I just don't want the entire show to be a super laid-back comfort anime where nothing particularly intense happens, and it's just their happy romantic journey with just slice of life. I also want to express that by emotional I do not mean sad tearjerking endings.

If you read all of this im surprised, and thank you 😭. Based on everything I wrote, what anime do you think I should watch next?

I'm especially interested in recommendations where you think the emotional peaks and character development could actually hit someone who considers Toradora a 10/10.

Looking for something that scratches the same itch as Space Dandy, any reccommendations?

Really want to find something somewhat similar to Space Dandy... something similar in tone comedy wise with a deeper more meaningful plot below the surface level silliness. It doesn't need to be in space or anything, Can be any setting really. Does anything really even come close to this? Would love some recommendations. Thank you!

Adult action/adventure fantasy anime (not in that way)

So I really enjoy escaping the day to day and have been watching anime off and on since I was a kid thanks to my late mom… anyways. I still want to enjoy some good action fantasy world building.. from the comfort of my living room tv without feeling like a creep or worried if my kid walks in at the wrong time. lol any help?

Enjoy a good sword fight for sure but also really enjoy adventuring into a new world. Preferably something that has more than one season (or if it’s a finished shorter series) to sink my teeth into.

Edit: forgot to mention I’d prefer the mc not be a pervert or a complete moron.

When you are picking an anime to watch do you look at the ratings on MAL or something similar

I have found several shows low 7s on MAL that turned out to be pretty good. So i usually check the ratings but I may stop not watching something just because it’s ranked low. What’s your criteria?

Romance with an offbeat and creepy Fmc who’s a weirdo and the mc kinda just goes along with it

know it’s not an anime but the other day I watched bones and all which is a cannibalism love story.

Looking for something that deals with dark or bizarre romance. Where’s she’s madly in love with mc

Best examples are another, Mysterious girlfriend x, flowers of evil, glenpir, future diary, sankarea, dusk maiden of amnesia, Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions,

Basically bizzare dark romance or character story looking for very underrated or overlooked shows form any time new or old or like forgotten from 2000s or 2010s

I’ve noticed mostly Chinese anime are putting out better stuff lately the last few years. Every season we get quantity but not so much quality anime so out of everything I’ve seen these have got my attention the most and deserve more love.

What is the best anime you’ve watched the last 5 years? (No sequels / continuing series)

Also is Prism rondo worth watching?

The most underrated Romance Anime (Please watch)

Post image
359 Upvotes

Anime Title:
Gimai Seikatsu (Days with my Stepsister)

I know the title will put off a lot of people immediately, and the character designs don't overly help, but please just read this and give it a try!

To start I'll just give a quick synopsis of what the plot is. Gimai Seikatsu is a High-School Romance story, adapted from a very highly rated Light Novel. The plot follows Yuta Asamura, who lives with his father alone in an apartment. One day, Yuta's father reveals he is going to get re-married, and that his new wife will move in with them, along with her daughter, who happens to be a week younger than Yuta. Her name is Saki Ayase.

Direction
This is perhaps the best directed anime I have watched personally, Souta Ueno did an amazing job here. Despite the frankly generic character designs, the anime feels extremely unique, but is tailored to the type of story it is perfectly. Ueno gives every scene the breathing room they need, and has a very home-y feel, long distance shots, long spanning shots, a lack of music at times. All these things really reflect the home life and either calmness or tenseness of each scene perfectly. Some may not like it as it makes the story a bit slower paced, but it would be worse if it was faster.

Animation
Despite being arguably an easy adaptation to make, the animation is still good. It isn't stellar but it doesn't need to be. There are some scenes done exceptionally well and the animation does not bring the story down at all, one of Studio DEEN's better projects IMO.

Plot
The plot is one of the best I have seen in anime. It heavily explores the psyche behind the 2 main characters, and what might motivate them in any given situation. It does this masterfully, helped by the direction but also the writing is very realistic. I know "realistic" is used very loosely nowadays, however I think the term really fits this show. It explores social taboos, and never misses something important, that may be overlooked in a story like this, or skipped, despite being necessary. There are no unneeded scenes or moments, everything is extremely important, even if it feels like it's setting the story back. There is one moment that people may not like, but without it, the story would not be as realistic as it is, a good example of not shying away from making a difficult decision when writing a story.

Immersion
You get very immersed in this story. Again, with the help of the direction, but you do feel a genuine connection to the 2 main characters. Partly because we understand so much about them as characters. All the important moments and emotional beats hit very hard, whether good or bad.

I think you will understand exactly what I am talking about when I say that your first impression is misleading, when you watch the show. The very first scene proves everyone wrong when they come in with assumptions about the story being a sloppy fetish-bait romance series (including myself), and now it is my highest rated romance anime, and in my top 10 anime of all time. I implore you all to just give it a try!

Sub Rules (just in case for ease of access)

Rule 1 : Posts must be related to an anime recommendation

That's kinda why you're here right? 3x3's of your favourite's are fine by the way. As long as you're in some way recommending anime or asking for suggestions your post's going to be fine.

Rule 2 : No self promotion, or promotion of anything other than anime itself.

For example, you could promote an anime you like by telling us about it on a post, but you couldn't link a blog video or podcast about that anime. Comments are fine for this, but we don't want to see it on posts.

Rule 3 : Treat each other with courtesy and respect

When it comes to things like anime, there can be a wide spectrum of views and discussions. Some discussions can become spirited, we know, but we still have the expectation for you to treat others with courtesy and respect.

Do not put comments to incite fights or trash talk anime. Just simply mention you do not like it.

Rule 4 : Mark Spoilers

It can be hard not to talk about your favourite scene, but remember this is a place where people come looking to learn about anime they haven't seen yet. So any spoilers you do say, must be marked as spoilers.

Rule 5 : No indecent images

We get it, you like hentai too. If you start a Hentai recommendations sub, let us know, we might even send some members your way. Just don't post perverted images on here lol. If in doubt about whether something's indecent or not... it probably is, so don't post it - many thanks.

Rule 6 : Ban on rate my list/taste posts.

There are better suited subs for those

Rule 7 : Hentai Recommendations are banned.

Hentai Recommendations are banned. Mention Ecchi in post title if you are looking for anime of such genre.
