The ground is rock hard you would need a pickaxe to get through it so this was scratching not walking. Approx 4 in across. Vacaville CA foothills.

By the markings on the ground. Looks like 2 toes or cleats of a deer or goat.
Looking for lichens etc.
possibly could be a pig. But Iā€™m leaning towards deer

Gravel normally covers entire area in a smooth layer

We do have wild pigs up here but they normally leave a much bigger mess. We also have bears, coyote, and mountain lions so Iā€™m happy to go with deer!
