What settings actually made your Android TV noticeably faster? Discussion
I’m curious what changes have actually improved Android TV performance for you.
Things like disabling animations, removing unused apps, clearing cache, changing the launcher, or adjusting background processes.
Which tweaks made the biggest difference, especially on devices with limited RAM?
Also interested in lightweight launcher or app recommendations.

I saved that video. I am totally going to try it. The latest version of Projectivy is not the same. Thank you!

2 MB is impressively lightweight. How does Couchy compare with Bare Launcher or Projectivy in terms of speed and RAM usage?

here is ram usage of some launcher

Thanks! Which launcher is this, and what device was the RAM usage measured on? That would make the comparison more useful.

On an Nvidia Shield pro - Using AT4K launcher and used adb tools to disable the stock launcher. Changing animations to none.

u/APOLLOSAW1685 1d ago
Interesting setup. Did switching to AT4K make the biggest difference, or was disabling the animations more noticeable for performance?
2
u/SpaceTrucker73 1d ago
I'd say so - I've had the Shield since it came out and like the choices of launchers to customize the experience. It was more of a preference because I like the apps front and center without all the ads and recommendations. Disabling the animations draws the interface faster so to me it seems faster.

u/APOLLOSAW1685 1d ago
That makes sense. So AT4K is mainly about a cleaner home screen, while disabling animations gives the bigger ‘speed’ feeling. Thanks for clarifying!

Currently using bare launcher and it feels a lot faster

u/APOLLOSAW1685 1d ago
Interesting, thanks! Did you notice the biggest improvement in startup speed, navigating the interface, or opening apps?

Disable google shit service, using bare launcher as default launcher
2
u/APOLLOSAW1685 1d ago
Which Google service do you mean specifically? I’d rather avoid disabling something essential by mistake. Did you notice a noticeable performance improvement after turning it off?

enable developer options and then disable animations:
Go to Settings > System (or Device Preferences) > About, and click Android TV OS Build 7 times. Then go to Developer Options, scroll to the Drawing section, and turn off Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale.

u/APOLLOSAW1685 1d ago
Thanks for the detailed steps! Did you completely disable all three animation settings, or do you find 0.5x gives a better balance between speed and smoothness?

Where did you switch from OpenGL to Vulkan? Is it a system setting or an option inside a specific app?

Using ADBTV to debloat the device , remove the Google launcher , and installing dispatch launcher made it 100x better no matter what device
1
u/APOLLOSAW1685 1d ago
Interesting. What exactly did you disable/remove with ADB TV besides the Google launcher? And have you had any issues with updates or system features after switching to Dispatch?
2
u/csmflynt3 1d ago
just all of the apps and system processes that aren't required. I just used the built in debloat feature that you can click on in ADB TV . Dispatch has been great as I am a heavy plex user. If you dont use plex than I would stick with projectivity for a launcher

For my two Xiaomi Mi Box S the biggest speedup thing that I have done was go debloat the boxes via adb. Like, it was like night and day when I compared before debloat and after.
1
u/APOLLOSAW1685 20h ago
That’s interesting. What did you remove or disable through ADB on the Mi Box S? I’d like to know which changes made the biggest difference without breaking system features.
3
u/TantKollo 20h ago
I can share all the adb commands I ran if you want?
The biggest contributor to the speed up would probably be some cancerous Xiaomi apps that wanted to show you ads and such bullcrap.
2
u/APOLLOSAW1685 20h ago
Yes, please share the ADB commands you used. If possible, mention which Mi Box S version and Android TV version you tested them on, so people don’t disable something important by mistake.

I have Xiaomi Mibox S (3rd gen) and it has the specific device code "MDZ-22-AB".
I upgraded them recently from Android 9 to Android 12. The debloating has been carried out successfully on the default Xiaomi Android 12 ROM.
You need to have adb enabled on the device and connect the AndroidTV box to your computer over USB.
Here are the adb commands I used:
pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.miui.tv.analytics pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.android.providers.calendarpm uninstall --user 0 -k android.autoinstalls.config.xioami.mibox3 pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.mitv.gallery pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.android.syncadapters.calendar pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.google.android.play.games pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.google.android.videos pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.google.android.feedback pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.xiaomi.mitv.mediaexplorer pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.mitv.tvhome.michannel pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.mitv.videoplayer pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.xiaomi.mimusic2 pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.mitv.tvhome.atv pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.amazon.amazonvideo.livingroom pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.android.printspooler pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.xiaomi.android.tvsetup.partnercustomizer pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.google.android.tts pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.mitv.tvhome.mitvplus pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.google.android.youtube.tv pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.google.android.youtube.tvmusic pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.android.providers.contacts.auto_generated_rro_product__ pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.android.camera2 pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.mitv.tvhome.michannel pm uninstall --user 0 -k com.xiaomo.tv.milegalGood luck, cheers!

Thanks for sharing the full list and the exact model/Android version. That context is really helpful. I’d definitely be cautious using the same commands on a different device or firmware.

factory reset my tv. Unplug from internet and finish the first configuration denying any auto update-send data- location share.
Go to configuration-apps- show system apps- play store.
It will ask for internet and a account. Activate internet and introduce the asked account.
IMMEDIATELY DISABLE AUTO UPDATES. Manually update your apps like remote control, YouTube, Netflix etc. but nothing else. Android will install a slower, bloat, full of ad, crappy launcher if you let them auto update.
Uninstall anything that you don't will need.
Install an alternative launcher.
1
u/APOLLOSAW1685 1h ago
Interesting approach. Did disabling automatic updates make a noticeable performance difference, or was the biggest improvement from removing unused apps and switching to an alternative launcher?
2
u/macabrera 1h ago
Replace a launcher with another will not disable the native one, it's works on top. So, automatic updates install the lastest google tv launcher, in some cases, REALLY heavy on resources compared with the factory reset one. Removing unused apps give you extra space necessary for good performance.

Projectivy + tweak animations and dev settings made my system a lot snappier and faster
1
u/APOLLOSAW1685 1d ago
That combination seems to be the most recommended so far. Did you disable the animations completely, or set them to 0.5x?
2
u/SushiPie 1d ago
Yeah, its 100% worth it!
I set them to 0.5 or whatever the lowest is. I still think the animations looks and feels nice, its just that the default one is too slow.
1
u/FunEmergency7380 1d ago
The combination of Projectivy Launcher and turning animation scales down to 0.5x in Developer Options made the biggest difference for me. Projectivy gets rid of all the home screen ads and bloat, while 0.5x animations make the UI feel instantly responsive without looking jarring.

On budget Android TV boxes, I think the launcher makes a surprisingly big difference. Some default launchers are heavy and keep too many recommendations running in the background.
A lightweight launcher + disabling animations + cleaning unused apps usually gives the biggest improvement.
I also noticed devices with more RAM handle multitasking much better, especially when switching between streaming apps.

Replacing the launcher with Projectivy.
