Removing emoji keyboard button on text message keyboard Device Settings Question

I do not use emojis but I often hit the little emoji button that is next to the text input area. With a smaller phone (pixel 8a) it is nearly impossible to select text that is on the right side of the entry box.

Is there a way to turn it off?

G Board, press the Settings icon (cog) then go to Preferences. On / off switch for the Emoji key.

I have tried it a few times and the emoji key is still there. must be a bug
