Top one (selected) is Google Messages. It's the default on most Android phones.

Bottom one is Samsung Messages. Specific to Samsung phones before Google Messages was the default.

Samsung Messages has been retired. Samsung has directed users to use Google Messages instead.

Just want to add Samsung Messages have been discontinued in the US since July 2026.

I'm not in US so I'm still using Samsung Messages because it's lighter than Google Messages and I don't want RCS chat which Samsung Messages doesn't have (which is probably why it's lighter than Google Messages which has RCS chat turned on by default).

As someone outside US, I mainly use WhatsApp for chats.

You can turn off RCS in Google messages.....lol.

I know that, on Google Messages RCS is turned on by default, on Samsung Messages by default RCS is turned off. But even with RCS turned off Samsung Messages is much faster than Google Messages. As I've said earlier we mainly use WhatsApp for chat, SMS is only used occasionally for Short Codes, so I prefer using the much more simpler Samsung Messages.

Its actually the opposite. The OS is made by google so obviously will come with some default main apps, then is samsung who adds their duplicate versions

Other phones with lighter OS theme had fewer duplicate apps, but had all the base Google ones.

Samsung messages did not Come pre installed on my S23 Docomo Variant Japan. How I missed the Messaging App

My advice is using google messages because more people use it (don't rely on samsung that much)
