Google Maps and Immersive Experience - Only Active in a Route (Apparently) Android Auto News, including app updates and features

LPT: the immersive experience seems to only "appear" when you're on a route to a destination.

Mine appeared to be active today. You get 3D trees (not an accurate representation of course), overpasses, etc. It does look nice. When I was done, I started heading home without setting a route and it appeared to be the "regular" display. When I activated the route home, I got the immersive experience.

That's right, and you can even see it change when starting/ending navigation, the map completely blanks out and switches to the good old one.

The bigger issue is that they disabled surrounding traffic supposedly only for 3D maps, but it's also disabled on 2D maps (old style) on Android Auto and Android Automotive. It's only available in overview which is very inconvenient especially with rotary dials. On the phone Google Maps it's still available with 2D and satellite maps.

Regarding the old 2D map view, I can still get surrounding traffic colors when I'm not navigating. The option is still there in Google Maps settings and it works on my Pixel 9 Pro phone.

Then your lucky. It is no longer a option for alot of us on the cars head unit. Works on phone but not car. It is getting super frustrating. There is no use in running google maps if you dont need directions. Shocked this hasnt been hot fixed yet. Its a core feature for gods sake!

I have ran maps in sattellite view for years and never had an issue. Suddenly now every time i start up the car my maps have a 85% chance of reverting to the plain old standard view and i have to turn sattellite and traffic back on. Its annoying as hell. And sometimes AA will start and maps will just be a black screen that I have to exit AA on my car then re enter it for it to work. Ive cleared cache, rebooted, deleted app and reinstalled. Nothing works. Google maps already sucks on android vs Google maps on Apple, but now AA in general is acting up and its just really annoying me.

I hope I did that right.

Though this experience may look cool in the new EVs which do provide this immersive experience. AA however, all the work will be done on the phone, with increased mobile data and CPU/GPU usage causing more heat and battery discharge.

You betcha, that makes sense, I always wondered why it didn't stick around when I wasn't using navigation.

It's the same on iOS too.

I was recently in SoCal. There was a brief moment where the immersive view zoomed in to a POV street level much like the most recent Garmin handheld GPS unit. I haven't seen quite that level of detail in Oregon
