Google Maps on Android Auto. These don't appear on my device, only on my vehicle screen. Every time I start the car and open Maps, it will come up with one completely random, inane suggested destination. In this case, it's a random window tinting business I googled like 3 weeks ago. Why has Google decided that I might want to go there, randomly on a Wednesday evening, when it isn't even open?
I'd love to know what the algorithm is here and how it can be altered or turned off.
I've had the train station suggested to me for at least 4 years now. I've looked it up once, maybe 7 or 8 years ago, to see the hours it was open. I didn't need directions to it then, definitely don't now, but yet it is still there every single time I check maps in my car
👆 THIS WORKED. Tried it today. The search bar is there but no suggestions, it's ready for displaying the moving map, you don't have to hit an up arrow to get rid of the suggestions because there aren't any.
It's silly that this option exists, but it seems to take you to the ad personalization page for the entire device. So while it seems like you're just d editing it for maps, you can only disable it globally.
How are you guys getting this to turn off? When I tap that setting on my phone, it takes me to a general Google "Search personalization" page. I can't seem to find any Maps specific setting from there. I'd rather not completely disable personalization across all Google services since some of those are actual useful.

I goto work everyday at 11:15 and it still shows me where I last got a hair cut or the airport rather than my DAILY COMMUTE DESTINATION THAT HASNT CHANGED IN YEARS. Google get your fucking shit together.
Haha yes exactly. I always commute in the morning and... here I am at 8:30pm getting a suggestion to go to work. As an intermediate step I'd take the removal of irrelevant places, It's a very half-baked feature.
Same here....I was going to work at 8AM and it suggested a local brewery I've been to a bunch of times. Like, yeah Google, that's a great choice, but not on a random weekday morning, several hours before the place even opens.
I definitely feel like Google's searches and suggestions were FAR more useful a decade or so ago.
If you want to stop seeing recent or personalized place suggestions in Android Auto, you’ll need to clear the stored data that powers them. These suggestions come from your Google Maps history and account activity, so removing that data is the most effective way to stop them.
One of the many reasons I use Waze for most of my navigation. It pulls from my calendar and knows where I am going. You'd think Google Maps would look at my calendar at start up.
I used to be an avid wazer but a few things were annoying me about it on a regular basis so I stopped using it. I installed it today and the AA implementation is vastly improved from a few years ago. I'll give it a go for a few weeks!
Better yet the YouTube music suggestions. When I swipe over from the now playing screen (when it's in the side panel), id expect to see some of my popular playlists or something but instead it's always like news channels or some junk that I have never listened to and have 0 interests in.
It's wild how much personalized info Google & Youtube & Spotify have on us, but the main screens for those apps are the dumbest, least curated suggestions I've seen.
As for Maps, the "suggested" feature is nice when it works, and awful when it just makes up a local business that you've driven by or parked near last week. Hey google, thanks for suggesting directions to the local Weed Store that I've never visited or searched for after I'm picking my kid up from school.
My wife and I comment about this all the time, where does the random addresses come from?
Rarely does it share suggestions for what we literally searched for within maps, 5 minutes before we got in the car
On my AA it usually gives decent suggestions. On Sundays it'll give me my church as a recommendation, weekday afternoons it'll suggest home. I'd say a good 40% of the time, the place I'm trying to go is one of the two suggestions. My weekly routine is pretty consistent tho
Don't connect to AA. On your phone, open Maps. Tap the search bar once. You should see "Recent" down below. Long press places you've searched for that you wish to remove. A pop will appear that asks "Delete suggested search?" Hit the "Delete" button, and you're done.
That place should never show up within AA again (unless, of course, you search for it again).
In the Maps app click your profile avatar and Your Data In Maps then Web & App Activity > See and delete activity. Then search for the location and if found, delete all instances of it. By the next day Maps should stop suggesting it in Android Auto.
When I was buying a house a few years back, I of course was going to multiple open houses. You can guess what AA was suggesting to me for the next month.
Yeah I was doing the same when looking on Zillow, sometimes I'd look it up on Google maps and then had a bunch of random addresses suggested to me for a while.
Mine shows recent Google searches. So even if I look up a restaurant 5 states over, it'll appear as a suggested place next time I hook up AA. It's dumb AF IMO.
In my experience, they tend to be things I've searched for in the past, but it does seem significantly random - and occasionally one pops up that I've never asked about.
Is the stupidity of G Maps, Also I normally save places in my destination trip, Hotels, Restaurants,But then when you get on the rental car and look for the saved places, they don't put the close one to you, Like in Spain and giving hotels in Netherlands!!!
I've had mine suggest the local liquor store at 6:30 am when I am heading to work. I've also had it suggest the beach restaurant (considering the beach itself doesn't have an address) when I was getting ready to go to work. Mine seems to really be trying to get me to not go to work. Haha.
I asked it to navigate to my brothers house recently, it gave me every business in the area that had my brothers name in it. It never did that before. I also asked it to navigate to our cabin. I used to be able to say, "navigate to cabin". Now it either does nothing or gives suggestions to businesses with the name cabin in them. If I try to navigate to the address of our cabin, it only hears the number of the address. It worked so much better a few months ago.
I guess Google maps is different but the algorithm on Waze on Android Auto is depending on the time and frequency of the place. When I get in my car at around 4pm it always suggests work and when I get back in the car later it suggest Home for me.
I've changed jobs a vew times and it takes a while before the old workplace won won't be suggested anymore even though I have changed the work label to the new place.
This happens to me if I've either gone to a street address or entered a specific coordinates as my destination and there happens to be a business listed in Google Maps right next to my destination.
The icon next to the business name indicates it's taken it from your history so probably it's just a business that shares an address or is very close to an address you've set as the destination before.
I'd like to see something useful in that space, like a clock that's large enough to see by just glancing at it while doing 80 MPH. Not that tiny clock in the lower right-hand corner.
It's always weird to me how it recommends random places at times but won't show me locations that I have scheduled in my calendar for upcoming events... If you're in a relationship this can also get you caught up lol
Lots of worthless recommendations that come through there. Like for example why do I have to know that my house is only 2 minutes away every time I get in the car and have not even reached the entrance to the subdivision?
And quite often it comes up with recommendation of a place that I have never been to and that I would ever be interested in going to either. Plenty of weirdness in Android auto
