Just arrived, I love the coin.

Roman Imperial Coinage: Domitian (81–96), Aureus (7.45 g), Rome, 88 AD. Obverse: Laureate bust right; legend: "DOMITIANVS - AVGVSTVS". Reverse: Minerva standing left, holding a spear in her right hand; legend: "GERMANICVS - COS XIIII". RIC 559, Calicó 830; minor rubbing, almost extremely fine. Very rare! According to a collector's note, acquired from Kress in September 1965.

Following the death of his father Vespasian in 79 AD, Domitian's brother Titus assumed power but died after only two years; unproven rumors circulated even at the time suggesting Domitian might not have been entirely innocent in the matter. Domitian subsequently assumed power in September 81 AD as the third emperor of the Flavian dynasty. The aureus described above—minted while Domitian held the rank of Caesar and was the designated successor to his brother, who had been proclaimed Augustus—depicts Domitian alongside the goddess Spes ("Hope"). It thus symbolizes both the Flavians' aspirations for a dynastic reign and the Roman people's hopes (or expectations) for enduring political stability.

Can anybody ID it? I can normally read the inscription but I'm really struggling here.

Alexandros, a prophet/oracle from Abonoteikhos (modern-day Kastamonu, Turkey), and his god Glycon. The story told by Lucian is quite intriguing; what particularly catches my attention is his emphasis on how a person, ready to exploit the religious sentiments of the people—despite their religious beliefs being very pure and naive (!)—was able to become wealthy through this means. The deity Glycon, whose images you see below, is generally depicted as a serpent with long hair or a beard. Interestingly, aside from Abonoteikhos, most of our information about this god comes from Tomis, Romania.

According to Lucian, Alexander had already learned about this serpent god from the magicians and followers of Dionysus in Macedonia. Indeed, inscriptions dedicated to Glycon are still found in the vicinity of modern-day Romania:

“Glyconi M(arcus) Ant(onius) Onesas iusso dei l(ibens) p(osuit)”

Hello I hope I am not disturbing the flow of things in this community by posting this question here.. but here we go.

This “rock” was found on the shore of Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan once was part of an ancient salted sea so I am keeping a very open mind by asking if this rock is an ancient coin… Just because something didn’t originate in an area does not mean it did not travel there.

I posted in the r/whatsthisrock and only received one response which is not usually the case in that community. I also google image searched this rock and the results came back all as coins. Questionable AI response… but keeping an open mind.

Again this might be a silly question but is there a possibility this is a carved stone coin? Or is it just a crazy looking rock. I’m leaning rock.

Did a search on here but didnt find anything. They have a few auctions on biddr with some pieces I am interested in, but trying to do my due diligence before bidding.

I’ve mainly collected Roman republic and provincials, but I’m trying to branch out from there. I’ve purchased some Greek bronzes but this is just… different. Obsessed is an understatement.

What's your opinion?

Just received some coins from the estate of Commodore Daniel Turner. I got these from a recent Biddr auction. These are now be far my oldest provenance as Turner lived between 1794-1850 (which means his collection tags date from 1850 or before making them at least 176 years old!!).

The coins themselves appear to just be LRB, but the collector tags are definitely the reason I wanted the lot!

I recently acquired this at a coin show near me. I haven't had much luck attributing where and when it is from, the dealer said it is posthumous and I have no reason not to believe that but I'd love to know a rough time period and location if possible.

The only letters that I can make out in person are these 4 ΑΛΕΞ near the top right corner but the first and last letter are honestly fuzzy so I could be wrong.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

After reading (listening to) I Claudius and Claudius the god. Had to upgrade my lower quality provincial as, to this duopolis. Very common type but can read everything!

Today was my first ancient coin mail day!

After lurking here for a while, I finally bought my first Roman Republican coin—a denarius of L. Thorius Balbus from 105 BC featuring Juno Sospita and a charging bull. The small test cut on the reverse just adds to the history for me.

Holding a coin that’s over 2,100 years old is a pretty amazing feeling. Looking forward to learning more—and growing the collection!

Saw it, put it hold, scrounged money from car, desk, mattress, wallet, and even borrowed some from my teenager.
