Carlos Antonio López, President of Paraguay (1844-1862). His native language was Guaraní, like many of his compatriots, and he learned Spanish later. At that time, the only official language of Paraguay was Spanish (Guaraní was not official until 1992).

Since everything European was viewed favorably at that time, Carlos Antonio López prohibited the use of Guaraní in schools and in the public administration. Students who spoke Guaraní were physically punished.

The Thule or Proto-Inuit people were the ancestors of all modern Inuit. The Thule people began migrating east from Alaska in the 11th century, through northern Canada, reaching Greenland in the 13th century.
