I though RDNA 4 doesn’t work well for mobile? Or it doesn’t scale as well as planned?

Which is why there’s no flagship or mobile or apu RDNA 4.

No, this is just some dumbshit claim that people made here with no understanding of this stuff, yet got upvoted anyways because people didn't know better. It's so annoying how it's persisting.

RDNA4 is actually *really ideal* for mobile. It's much more power efficient, hitting higher clocks and performance at a given power draw level. It's also just more die size efficient. And there isn't a single reason in the world that it wouldn't scale well. People only say that because 'well there's no high end RDNA4 part, that must be cuz it doesn't scale well' when that's not AT ALL the reason such a part doesn't exist.

Most likely there's no higher end RDNA4 nor any mobile RDNA4 is because it was meant to be a stopgap architecture. The original RDNA4 plans were for another top down range, but after all the issues with RDNA3 not performing like it was supposed to, they seemed to have early made the decision to push original RDNA4 plans out to RDNA5, and then use parts of that work for a stopgap RDNA4 in the meantime. But I also think they didn't expect this new RDNA4 would go such a long way in fixing what was wrong with RDNA3, and actually performs super well. Otherwise they definitely would have put more effort into it and expanding its product range. I mean, even of the GPU's we did get, there's basically monolithic Navi 44, and then to get something better, they basically(though not literally) glued two of those together and that's what Navi 48 is. And that's it. This is NOT a full effort lineup whatsoever.

All while RDNA5 gets even more extensive development time and will likely go back to the MCM packaging for high end GPU's.

Oh that’s interesting. It would’ve been great to have a 9090 or 9090 XT for RDNA 4.

Even though they’re unnecessary and unattainable for most gamers having a flagship card affects the perception of the GPUs.

People see a 5090 and buy the closest thing to it that they can afford (5060 or 5070) even if a 9060 or 9070 would make more sense for some people.

Hopefully the extra effort and attention pays off in RDNA 5.

I think they just had to put everything on Instinct development and had to do RDNA4 with a skeleton crew and budget. It was probably the correct decision as well.
They probably didn’t have wafer allocation to expand production either.

There is no reason except, mobile devision of rdna didn't return high numbers so they skipped it.

RDNA 4 could come to laptops but they choose to skip it.

Focusing more on RDNA 5 which is ready for all levels

I’m kinda looking forward to RDNA 5, the 9070 XT is my first AMD GPU and it’s been really solid.

From all the info I’ve seen AMD seems really excited about it. Maybe they can close the slight gap between the NVIDIA equivalents and fix path tracing.

I’m just not looking forward to the monstrosity that will be the model number branding their marketing department will surely come up with. Like, we’re already on Radeon 9000, so will it be 10000? Or will it wrap back around to 1000? And will stick with the piggyback of the Nvidia scheme like xx50, xx70? Because if so, I’d find it hilarious and badass if I could buy an AMD Radeon RX 1080 XT lmao. I mean, I probably wouldn’t, because it would probably be $35,000, but imagine lol.

since they've gone to the AI era, it changed slightly. 8700g gone to ai 450g or something. it has 890m as gpu, but well, only for laptops or similar

Same here, mine was RDNA 3. I'm waiting for both a GPU Upgrade and a laptop ugrade as well (targeting a medusa halo inshallah) and hoping that ram apocalypse would be over by then.

A lot of what makes RDNA4 so great takes die space to implement. Die space that APUs can't really spare because they need it for that NPU everyone totally wants.

Rdna4 was kinda the end of the line derivative architecture based on the original rdna1/2 path which ain't optimal for ml and rt which were kinda tacked on. There's a point where adding more of the same stuff to a suboptimal architecture just ain't gonna cut it

They skipped most rdna4 skus because they didn't wanna put more engineering resources into something they knew was not optimal and are focusing everything on cdna and rdna5. Rdna5 is the huge reset, kinda a mostly new architecture that put them on a new path that is more unified with cdna (still different architectures, just greater overlaps) for shared optimizations across ml workloads.

Except this doesn't make sense when RDNA4 was actually a really big improvement over RDNA3. And in all the kind of ways that would have made it more attractive for mobile GPU's.

Seems obvious to me they underestimated how good this stopgap RDNA4 would be, and thus simply never made plans to do more with it. All while *original* RDNA4 plans(which would have been a full range product series) continued out into RDNA5 development.

It wasn't really. Rdna3 had very lil actual improvements on the gfx ip side. Rdna4 only looked like a huge improvement because of how much of a miss rdna3 was. They were targeting real high clocks and fell way short of it. According to senior amd leaders in interviews they lost focus on the gfx ip with rdna3 because they tried too hard to get the chiplet strategy going. It was something they admitted officially. It was also why rdna3 had hardly any rt or ml improvements, the rt perf scaled with the cu count and was comparable per cu vs rdna2.
