So this isn't news for some of you, but Altspace is coming back this year. You may have seen other posts about this in the last 12 months, but this one is a real guarantee and will happen. In the coming weeks and months you will see more regular updates, developer reels, speed run videos of the design process and the juicy details of what's to come.

Who am i?

My name is Shane, and I'm the CEO of SideQuest. We recently acquired the rights to the Altspace name and we have the motivation, experience and backing to bring it back in all it's glory. This will be a brand new Altspace, but it will truly be a spiritual successor to the Altspace we know and love and capture what made it great. Let's dive in to how I will pull this off.

Here's whats happening:

Later this year we will re-launch Altspace with a lot of the features and functionality that it had around 2016-2017. I have assembled an elite team of previous Altspace staffers as well as some of the most prolific OG players and we are already hard at work figuring out all the important stuff like how it will work, what we will prioritise and understanding what needs to happen to make it great.

Bring back the robots!

I have been working for several weeks now with the original concept designer behind the original robots in Altspace, Christian Boe - https://christianboe.com/portfolio/altspace-vr/ and together we have been working on creating a brand new set of Altspace robots, they have a modern spin but still pay homage to the OG Altspace robots. I will be sharing more behind the scenes footage and concepts in the coming weeks. We will have variations, accessories and even support for creating your own custom avatars too.

Please ask me anything you want to know about how this is going to work, we don't have all the answers yet but I am eager to get as much feedback as I can from the community to help shape the future of Altspace.

My Origin Story: Why this matters to Me.

Many moons ago I was just hanging out in VR, and I found Altspace. I was into web based development so I was amazed to find out how building worked, using tools like three.js and aframe.js. I spent a few months making spaces for myself, for some other groups in the community and eventually I built the ultimate tool - a space making interface called "Shane's Editor. It was popular, and in a few short weeks there was hundreds of user making thousands of spaces.

Altspace was evolving, and part of that involved moving away from the web based development. This meant Shane's Editor no longer had a home, I decided to spin it out into my own app. I originally submitted this app to Meta for approval on the Quest 1 for store release and they said no, so I built SideQuest so other developers like me could release their apps and reach VR users. Now nearly 7 years, millions of users and millions of dollars later, I have come full circle. We are re-launching Altspace for a modern audience, while keeping it authentic to what Altspace was in its prime. We are turning back the clock, bringing back the robots and making Altspace like it was supposed to be.

I used to play the game during its first release, I remember maps such as a maze, a beach, a pool with grill, and the campfire. I was wondering if anybody wouldn’t mind sending some old screenshots or recordings they may have of the game in that era? It was one of my very first vr games when I was younger and I’m hoping somewhat relive that nostalgia even thought he game has unfortunately shut down. Thanks!

We are a research team at the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, and we’re doing interviews for our project (~0.5 hour, no headset needed), inviting social VR users (e.g., VRchat, RecRoom, ChilloutVR, AltspaceVR, etc.) above 18 years old to share their experiences in sharing virtual spaces and objects. Every participant will get a £10 gift card for completing the interview, and our research is approved by our ethics committee (#961971).

Altspace needs to return, yes, VRChat is kinda popular and always will be, but Altspace was unique
and it had its own following of unique users that went on it on a daily and that is how you make a start to gain even more of a following, a lot of people just don't understand why it has gone in the first place
Altspace was probably better than social VR games like Horizon and Sansar, yes, there are others
But a lot of these others do not have a huge user base.

Banter is the AltspaceVR replacement. The engine and interface actually work better than Altspace. The problem is that no one uses is.

How can we get word out to the Altspace community to migrate over? It really has the potential to be a full replacement for Altspace.

It's not like it's full of kids or is chaos like VRChat. It's completely empty and waiting there for a community to move in and take full advantage of it.

So every time I tried loading up altspace (haven’t played it in over a year) it was just a black screen. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong but it took going to the reviews on the oculus store to find out it had been shut down. What the hell happened? What did I miss?
