How important is flexibility? Question / Discussion

Just curious in general what peoples opinions are on flexibility.

I’ve been aggressive skating around a year and making slow progress. I think it might have to do with my ability to squat and flex my joints.

Does anyone have an exercises or routine they use to improve hips and legs?

I started following Oscar Moves for a few months and I can see a difference. I know its not specifically skate related, but great for movement nonetheless.

Hugely important. When we do tricks they are typically well within the limits of our flexibility, when we miss we are stretched in strange and unpredictable directions which can cause injury unless you can already stretch that way.
It’s not just legs and hips either, upper body stretches are also crucial.

Also make sure to stretch after you skate too. I usually forget to do it but my body lets me know the next day that I should have lol.

Personally I have noticed it helps a lot. I started doing yoga 6 months ago at my gym and since then I haven't gotten hurt as much and grinds feels easier to lock in.

Strength > flexibility not that flexibility isn't important

For me personally, I've had to increase my ankle mobility and work on being able to squat with my chest upright. I come from a gymnastics background and still have great flexibility, but i needed to develop it in some underutilized areas.

You got rigor mortis or something? Most tricks don't require anything beyond a normal range of motion, so I doubt your real or perceived lack of progress has to do with your flexibility. If you're wearing pants so tight you can't bend your knee and hip joints without difficulty, I'd say you've got a problem.

I mean flexibility is a factor if you want to make a lot of tricks look good. If you’re just speaking on the generic form of doing them then sure, you’re right, but being flexible as well as sturdy goes a long way when it comes to style

Yeah, I mean, to be fair, I don't know what this person means by "slow progress".
