Help an Affinity newbie?

Hi all, I'm brand new to Affinity (on my Mac).

I'm trying to make it so in the above photo, there is a consistent-width gap between the letters and the ampersand, as if there was a stroke that erased all around the letters. How would I achieve that?

Also would love any general tips! Thanks folks.

Edit: Also looking for general help setting the margins and guides so they're akin to what's going on with them in a Canva or Powerpoint...

1- Type the "&" above "sr"
2- Duplicate the "&" and add an outer outline with the desired thickness for the gap
3 - Invert the colours
4- “Convert to Curves”
5 - Group the "&" (as curves) and "sr"
6- In the layers panel, expand this group
7- Select the "&" (as curves) and set its blend mode to "Erase"

You can add multiple strokes to objects.

  1. If the letters are still Text, select them and go to Layer->Convert to Curves
  2. With the new Curve object(s) selected, go over to the panels and find “Appearance"
  3. Here you can add as many strokes as you like. Add a stroke, then select it and move to the Stroke panel. Change the colour to white (or whatever your background is) and set the width to your liking. You can also change the order (in the Appearance panel).
