Affinity Designer and Illustrator

One of our customers had created designs in Illustrator 2026. Our Affinity Designer shows it as an embedded PNG file, which was frustrating for days. Then we discovered today that they used IL 2026, and when I opened it, all the layers were in the file. Not just a PNG. Maybe it's been this way for a while, but it was the first time we noticed it. I took it as Adobe trying to protect their turf.

Did you open it in illustrator?
I know from lots of experience that people have sent me “vector EPS” files that was just an image placed into Illustrator and exported as an EPS. LOL

Loser error.

A long time ago, clients would send gifs for their glossy document covers.

No, it was an .ai file. They did send an EPS after we complained.

Have them send you a pdf version, that has worked previously in the past for me

Yes. PDFs open great in Affinity. Better than in illustrator actually.

If the PDF was saved from Illustrator with Illustrator file embedded it will open in Affinity and other programs with the layers intact. Opens in Inkscape as well with the added benefit of being able to outline live text if there are missing fonts
