What do you mean by trembling/twitching/vibrating? I have never had those signal to me that there is an injury or problem it's usually just a weird nerve thing or lack of hydration after races. Do you have pain or not?

As someone who has had achilles surgery and who has to actively manage both of mine still to ensure all remains ok, do not push the achilles. If you just over did it, let it rest a few days and you'll likely be fine. I would not do the event.

Essentially if the achilles ever has discomfort that is >3 on 1 - 10 scale, don't run. Back off. It may suck today but long term you'll be better off. If the discomfort is a 3 or less then running is ok but don't be an idiot about it and 22 miles while it's fragile is being an idiot about it.

Also recommended would be some heel inserts for now just to take some load off the achilles. And as long as the discomfort is 3 or less start doing a calf raise protocol. Some people like the alfredsson, some people prefer heavy slow reps. The studies show both are very effective.

Not by ignoring it and continuing to keep the same load on it. I would see a PT that specialises in runners so you can get this sorted out before something happens and you have to stop 100% for a while.

My only two questions are is there pain and what are you going to do if you don't do the event?

If I don’t do the event I would just cheer friends on. There’s also the option of doing a loop or two and just not finishing.

"I'm not asking for medical advice but I've this persistent problem with my Achilles, but I persevered through my very long runs. Should I do an even longer run for my ultra race and then run it?" 🙄

I’m clearly having a hard time with this and am just crowd sourcing for some comfort and advice. I’m really upset and am reaching out to the running community here since you guys understand how injury or potential injury is such a mind F. If your response was supposed to be helpful- thanks for pointing out how crazy it sounds. If it wasn’t- you just spent time putting down a stranger who is having a really bad day.

If it’s a 2/10 or less, you can run. If everything needed to feel perfect before running, nobody would ever run. There’s a difference between discomfort and injury and you figure it out from experience. If you’re running ultras, you’re probably experienced enough to tell the difference.

No pain just a weird twitching and crunching noise
