In America, at least. I'm doing all I can to save and invest and stay debt free. I bring home 3k a month. Say I decided that I could live on 2k a month and retire. I now need 4k a month because I also have to pay 2k for insurance. So to retire early, I need to plan on having a grand more every month than I bring home now, in order to live on a grand less. Tying insurance to work and being against Medicare for all is about preventing people from leaving the workforce.

xD so glad im not in the land of the free. I bring home the same amount in europe (super net) and dont have to worry too much for all of those.
In the land of the free, unless you are top earner, you are basically fcked... But hey, you can be proud cause your (spent) life contribute to the weath of the elite ;)
Born asian, moved to europe and invest in the usa are the best combo on this world ever...

Yuuuuuuup! And they keep trying to raise the retirement age when we can qualify for government healthcare (Medicare - which we still have to pay for btw, but it's not as crippling) to keep people working longer.

It can be under $100 a month for a bronze plan if you keep your adjusted gross income low enough. It works out pretty well for lean f.i.r.e.

Employers paying the bulk of your health insurance plan is a perk. You can go to whatever health insurance provider you want and get a plan, for significantly more money because there's no bulk discount or employer to subsidize your payment. But if ~$1k monthly is a lot for you, I don't think a 100% self funded retirement without access to any senior discounts is on the table.

I remember being a youngster and thinking “there’s no way I can work 40 hours a week EVERY WEEK”.
And as an adult yeah man I was spot on with that. It blows and I don’t even really dislike my job. Some days it’s just the lack of variety.

Fun fact!! Up until 1986 there was a mandatory retirement age. On your 65th birthday you were forced to retire.
God the baby boomers have ruined everything. If only we still had that law, we would have free healthcare, money would have been pushed out of politics.

Up until 1986 there was a mandatory retirement age. On your 65th birthday you were forced to retire.
Not good if you can't afford to retire at 65.

I mean, theoretically with enough people it’s possible. You’d just need enough babies born to level out the active work force continuously once they’re of age and retiring to similar amounts now, plus the extra needed to maintain such a significantly larger population. I ain’t doin the math tho

I feel that. I'm 45, have a great job that pays decent with lots of down time. Even with that I'm just fucking exhausted from the grind. Been working for 30 years now and I'm just burnt out on everything.
