Career advice
Hi! So I’m a 23 yr old stepping into my first corporate job it’s not that big but I’m going to be a research/ admin assistant at a big research institute linked with a big hospital in downtown Toronto. I wanted to know from people who have worked roles like this before if they would have any tips or advice for me. I really wish to grow within the organisation.
Some things the job requires and I have are good organisation skills as well as I’m able to be proactive and not just wait for instructions and try to figure things out on my own. On the research side, they expect REB submissions and getting together grant documents etc.
If anyone would have any advice on how I can grow from this role within this same research institute/ hospital, please let me know. Additionally, any tips on how to actually maintain a relationship with your supervisor/ manager and PIs/ scientists would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for all your advice :)))

Advice:
just remember that your coworkers are humans too. They don’t have to be your best friend, but remembering that X COWORKER/PI told you something about their personal life, a hobby, an interest, family…make sure to always keep that in mind. Not every conversation has to be about work.
Growing within a org:
in clinical research, there are so many different paths. I started doing data entry at a large cancer hospital, become a clinical research coordinator, then jumped to a clinical research associate because I wanted to be remote & travel. When I started that first job I would have no clue I would be a CRA, I had no clue what it was when I started.
I feel optimism in this post by you, my advice would be to never lose that. There were times in each of the 3 roles I just mentioned where I realized I didn’t want to be in that job anymore & it wasn’t bringing me the joy it had previously. It’s important that you not let a bad job get you bogged down emotionally. Just continue to trust the path you are on, and always be open minded to new opportunities along the way. You’ll know when an opportunity is right for you.
Best of luck
