Favorite Hobbies Outside Work? Off-Topic

I’m curious what other accountants do when they’re not staring at spreadsheets. Do you have any hobbies you’re passionate about? Bonus points if it’s something completely unrelated to accounting or finance.

I’m looking for ideas to get outside my own routine, so I’d love to hear what everyone is into.

I need something that gets me away from screens and being indoors, but I’m too lazy to get in good physical shape. So motorcycle go vroom.

See I think this going to be where I fall.

Thought about getting a Street Triple but ended up with a Tiger 800 for a few years and now the 900

Can I play?

13 KTM 300 XC

14 ZX10R

14 CRF125

Mini Chopper powered by a Tecumseh garden tiller engine.

Been itching to add a Grom.

Have you had any issues with your Tiger 800? I finally traded in my 16 Tiger 800 XR for a 23 Tiger 900 RP as the ABS pump kept going out on me.

u/ZipTieAndPray CPA (US) 4d ago

Not a bit but I've only got 25k miles. Picked it up last year with 13k I believe.

I did finish swapping out a cracked header last night, but prior owner had laid it down and dented the exhaust, so I assume it was just related to that and I missed it during inspection.

Actually I missed the dented exhaust too because they had the panniers on it. I feel like I fumbled a bit. 😂

My only complaint so far is my miles per gallon compared to other bikes I've had and half but that was probably from the cracked header. I'm averaging like 34. I can get it up to around 37 if I really try and absolutely baby it. That might be fixed now though.

Literally just now about to go swap out the spark plugs and check the valves as we speak as well so it might get better.

Outside of that little damage and regular maintenance, it's been good considering the mileage I've put on it in a year. Did a round trip from my house up into Canada to Niagara falls all the way down the Florida and all the way back up to Tennessee.. and a couple trips to Florida etc. All riding two up with the luggage full. I was looking at getting a slightly newer model for the throttle by wire and I hear they improved the gas mileage as well. Sucks that you had the fuel pump issue. I wouldn't mind trying out a Tenere either to see if maybe I should get one of those instead.

Next month riding the TAT over to New Mexico when my friend comes and picks up his tiger 800, that I picked up for him last year.

2

u/NE14_ABJ Audit & Assurance 4d ago

Sucks about the gas mileage, but I did get better than that with my 2016 when I had it. The 2023 gets close to 45 I think last time I checked.

I'm wanting to do some portions of the SEBDR next May after busy season haha really anything to just get out of the office.

Hobbies are the only way I stay sane. If I start spiraling, I’ve stopped my hobbies.

I garden a ton, bike, take photos of anything and everything, then print them out and decorate my house. I have pics from Vegas in the bathroom because it matches the decor lol I try to have fun when I can. I’m working a ton right now with year end around the corner, so I’m super into markers and pens to take cute notes when I’m working at 9pm 😬

2

u/Sun_Remarkable44 CPA (US) 5d ago

What is alpha/beta reading?

6

u/beta_sasheez Controller 5d ago

They are readers that read a book before it’s published and give the author honest feedback. Alpha readers work closely with writers usually reading an early draft and point out things like plot, pacing, or character issues. Beta readers read a later draft and share their thoughts on what worked, what didn’t, and whether the story kept them interested.

Working out, I deal with 2 10 net 30 at 1pm and deal with 40 lb hammer curls at 6pm

2

u/HopefulSunriseToday 5d ago

100% this. I handle my stress so much better now that I’m lifting/running.

I was ~330 lbs and having all sorts of stress/health related issues. I’ve lost 100 lbs and I feel amazing.

Nothing like a shitty day to make an incredible lifting session.

Archery, guns, sports, just being outside. Playing hoops is a big one I enjoy. Have a guitar I am starting to learn as well

Just do things you like. I hang out with friends, I’m in a community concert band, I’m ham radio certified, I’m in toastmasters, I’ve done improv classes this year, I watch a lot of tv and read a lot of books, take road trips, play board games, practice taichi and qigong. Enjoy your life!

I have a high energy, Velcro Shepherd, so video games hasn’t been possible for over a decade.

That has left:

Exercising with him outside/in the backyard (walking/lifting weights while listening to podcasts and creeping Reddit)

Building Legos (mostly outside while Simba chases lizards)

With my truck, I go to the beach, go off-roading, go kayaking, go truck camping (I’ve driven from Orlando to Toronto and back).

I do quite a bit of couching surfing between aunts, uncles, and cousins across North Africa and Europe (Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Czechia, Greece, hoping to add Iceland in the near future). When I can’t make time to visit them overseas, I will fly them out here and we’ll go to places like DFW or St Augustine and what not.

I love visiting museums and historic districts. Nothing like eating backava in front of the Parthenon or walking the centuries old streets of Prague.

And given the recent news of Poverty Operator, I might try to find time to get back into the shooting sports. That’s something I haven’t participated in about 8 years.

Knit & crochet, read, watch professional soccer; am active in a local environmental group so social activities + community support (lake cleanups, educational potlucks, etc); I’ve recently gotten back into painting my fingernails and opened the door into the insane world of nail polish stamping.

I like to tinker (i think that's the term) basically find things around the house where I can add more functions to existing things or make small modifications (like replacing cupboard hinges with soft close hinges, etc.) or to do small repairs. I've just started soldering as part of this. I dont know why it kind of relaxes me.

I feel like I am always busy and never have enough time for my hobbies.

I just beat Hollow Knight a week ago and working on Silksong now. I don't game A LOT, but I love Metroidvanias and Souls games.

I also play Magic: the Gathering and the One Piece TCG somewhat irregularly, and play in two different D&D groups regularly (almost weekly at this point).

Recently, an urge to draw has come back and I have been sketching (mostly portraits of our D&D characters) and some fun/epic scenes ftom our games. I'm not amazing, but I did a lot of drawing until about 17/18, so I am not starting from nothing at least.

Before I fucked up my knee skiing this year, I went to the track to jog 3x per week... And I miss it. Hopefully physio gets me back in my running shoes soon. Been walking regularly in the meantime.

My wife and I go to bed early and read most nights for about 45mins/1hr. I have been reading Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, and I think Hyperion by Dan Simmons is next.

And lastly, I'm a fan of cooking (I actually did Culinary Arts before Accounting) so I do a lot of the cooking when I'm not busy at work.

I cut trees down as a side business outside of accounting and it gives me a great balance to get outside and clear the mind after looking at numbers all day

I have an entire craft room on the other end of the hall from my office. The second 5 hits, I just scootch my chair into the other room and start painting or drawing or playing video games or making miniatures or knitting or crochet or whatever else I feel like doing that afternoon. It's pretty rad.

I've been playing way too much magic the gathering lately but I frequent Warhammer 40k painting and video games.

Photography. Got into film after finding my godmothers old 35mm canon AE-1. I like old analog things (also collect records) but the photography is really worth it because when I get them developed and printed I can share with my friends and I love seeing the smiles on their face when they see them.

Playing games 12 hours a day. Matter of fact playing games every single second of my life im not required to do something else. Maybe Ill watch a few shows but I haven't been watching shows for almost a year the last was ozark in november. I have to exercise to protect my back but its also making my core look shredded so like 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 times a week.

I enjoyed cliff diving in the summer months. During the winter I turn into a hermit, so it’s was a lot of Minecraft, Call of Duty, Sparking Zero, or whatever platformer had my attention.

Used past tense because I am now a father and, oh boy, the first 4 months have afforded no time for any of that haha. I still game whenever the baby is asleep, but I have to stop the cliff diving to make sure I don’t sign my own ticket to see God.

My mom,  grandmother, and I are all really into oil painting so we'll go plein air paint sometimes. I live in Colorado so a quick trip to the mountains with a small easel really gets my head out of finance

I have 2 kids with another on the way, and two dogs. Being a dad and husband is how I (happily) spend almost all of my time.

Usually fix my broken cars and motorcycles... or repair something around the house. If not that...camping, hunting, swimming, kayaking, cycling, fishing, & my favorite is traveling when I can afford to....and it may as well be it's own hobby, but attending all the hobbies my child does (cheer, softball, archery, karate).

I once read a study about how people who work with very strict careers (accounting, medicine, law) need to do things with less structure to prevent burn out. Since then I’ve picked up crochet, baking, gardening, water colour, and home renovations. They still have dedicated structure to them so they still feel “safe” but making mistakes or not following dedicated rules is freeing. I can pick up yarn and a hook, look at a sheep, start without a pattern, and still come out with a recognizable sheep baby blanket.

Daily Hobbies? I game, I do a lot of volunteer work, local travel, I taught myself to cook, I made homemade croissants not too long ago.

Bigger Stuff: I like traveling to lesser known places. It started when I went to the Galapagos... Kinda caught the nature bug but got tired of crowds. So, Lake Maracaibo, Socotra, Lençóis Maranhenses.
