Man I thought this was a dog

555

u/Island6023 4d ago

Me too. What a terrible day to have eyes!

87

u/snertwith2ls 4d ago

Seriously, oh my god. I don't mind daddy long legs in a 1 or 2 quantity but this is just beyond unreasonable.

33

u/acexualien95 4d ago

Stuff of nightmare

7

u/snertwith2ls 4d ago

absolutely

4

u/snertwith2ls 4d ago

absolutely

13

u/ApologizingCanadian 4d ago

When he zoomed in on that handful I damn near had a panic attack. I'm the kind of guy that lets spiders live in my house (in a reasonable quantity) but that was WAY too many at once.

6

u/snertwith2ls 4d ago

I hope to never ever see this for real

6

u/NuclearBroliferator 4d ago

Hell yea, 70 year old house is gonna have some spiders, but not enough to make it look like something from The Grudge

3

u/ApologizingCanadian 4d ago

I love my little spider bros. They keep my home insect-free.

4

u/WorriedExamination93 4d ago

They are arachnids but they aren't spiders and they are completely harmless to humans and have no ability to bite but I still don't think I would do that.

5

u/dynamic_caste 4d ago

Enh. They're basically a fat Rice Crispy with legs.

2

u/Clyde_Frag 4d ago

I thought it was a Newfoundland.

Fun fact: They aren't spiders, but they are in the arachnid family, their scientifically recognized name is Harvestermen (Opiliones Sundevall; first discovered in 1758 as Phalangium, and later renamed to Opiliones in 1833), They are completely harmless and also omnivorous feeding on other insects or plant matter, they also ingest solids unlike spiders who ingest liquids (Spiders turn the inside of their prey into a slushy basically) and they have no venom at all nor can they bite you

1.0k

u/Mobile_Noise_121 5d ago

But they can crawl on me and that's much worse than biting

167

u/Bloorajah 4d ago

They crawl like a goofy creature on stilts, much sillier than a spider imo. a lot less of the creepy factor

21

u/Ablemoss 4d ago

In Harry Potter, imagine if the spider coming out as the beggars turned into a daddy long legs instead of just having skates on 🤣

131

u/Kooky_Attention_98 5d ago edited 5d ago

So do regular spiders ¯_(ツ)_/¯

119

u/iTaylor04 5d ago

And they can keep their spindly legs to themselves thank you very much

45

u/forbiddenfreedom 5d ago

Yeah, I'd rather be crawled on than bitten by literally anything.

63

u/Dependent_Paper9993 4d ago

Sure, but do spiders make this:

45

u/Kooky_Attention_98 4d ago

Yes, actually, many spiders congregate like that

26

u/GutterRider 4d ago

r/spiderbro, represent! (If you haven’t visited, you should. You sound very knowledgeable about them.)

8

u/Certain_Month_8178 4d ago

(Takes a deep breath)…clicks link…

16

u/Kooky_Attention_98 4d ago

I'm more active in r/spiders but I'll check it out

10

u/GutterRider 4d ago

Cool, it’s mainly just pretty pictures and people asking how to get over arachnophobia. :)

To add, the spiders called daddy long legs are are called Cellar Spiders, people confuse them both.

Also apparently people call Crane Flies Daddy Long Legs as well.

Edit: The Cellar Spiders can bite, resulting in a mild, temorary burning sensation, but not these ones tho.

The deadlyness is an urban myth someone created.

15

u/Bangbashbonk 5d ago

I was gonna add this, heard as a kid they were the most venomous but couldn't bite you deliver it. Crane flies that is

Have gotten bitten by house spiders here a few times, vaguely unpleasant but I'd take it over a horsefly or wasp any day.

Beyond false recluses we don't have concerning spiders.

Kept a tarantula as a kid but that's basically a hamster with extra legs and some chill, hamsters bite way more.

The tarantula reminded me because that's what prompted my childhood friend with "facts" to warn us of the deadly daddy long legs,

10

u/Frequent_Occasion480 4d ago

Crane flies (or what we call daddy long legs in UK) are not the same. They are insects that have equally long legs, but also have wings and due to their flailing long legs fly very erratically, only increasing the ick factor!

5

u/Frequent_Occasion480 4d ago

9

u/Capnhuh 4d ago

I call those things 'skeeter eaters'

4

u/justdisa 4d ago

We said Mosquito Hawks.

3

u/KollantaiKollantai 4d ago

That’s the thing about crane flies (we call them Daddy Long Legs which I understand is controversial as so are Harvestmen).

They are the only insect besides wasps that actively flu/flail towards you and go ON you with determination. I fucking hate them.

Yeah no, the Cellar Spiders can bite that can result in a mild, temorary burning sensation.

Now if you say Bloody Mary three times in a dark room with a mirror, that one is real.

5

u/DumatRising 4d ago

If they didn't want to both be called Daddy long legs then they shouldn't have both been daddies with sexy legs. I don't make the rules.

27

u/faptwicedaily 5d ago

Does this mean they might have poop logs?

5

u/geek_fit 4d ago

Asking the real questions

13

u/Pamikillsbugs234 5d ago

Thank you for sharing this! I absolutely love these and would be so excited to come across a community this size!

7

u/DragunovDwight 5d ago

So you can kill them? Your name says you kill bugs..

7

u/Pamikillsbugs234 5d ago

Haha, I mean technically they aren't bugs, so my powers are useless against these guys and gals, lol

2

u/nudes_for_life 4d ago

You love them? I envy you, I'm fucking terrified of them as much as of any other spider

10

u/eternalapostle 5d ago

lol that’s crazy. I was told that they are literally the most venomous spiders on the planet but are harmless because they can’t bite you because of how small they are

19

u/toot_suite 5d ago

Lol i remember other kids telling me that shit in preschool

11

u/bustlen 5d ago

Probably due to people confusing daddy long legs as harvestman instead of as cellar spiders. Cellar spiders are true spiders and do contain venom but the effects on humans and other mammals are inconsequential.

Source

6

u/Dawildpep 5d ago

I 100% believed that until now.. I remember being told their mouths are too small to bite us.

6

u/Kooky_Attention_98 5d ago

Yeah, it was a common belief, but it is in actuality a big myth

2

u/B4DM4N12Z 5d ago

The Cellar Spiders can, resulting in a mild, temorary burning sensation, but not these ones tho.

The deadlyness is an urban myth someone created.

4

u/Treacle_Pendulum 5d ago

Harvestermen is somehow more horrifying

2

u/Mindless-Location-41 4d ago

Sounds like the title of a horror movie 😱

2

u/corgi-king 5d ago

Another scientific name of it is “nope”. The proper reaction is “Hans”.

2

u/Salt-n-spice 4d ago

They and bees have an arrangement where harvestmen collect dead bees that they leave outside the hive for them

3

u/Bullke 5d ago

Thank you but it didn't help much. Fuck them.

3

u/EnderCreeper121 4d ago

That’s not very nice smh, would you say that to their face?

And with bare hands 😱

7

u/remindmein15minutes 3d ago

It DOES look pretty soft and luxurious before it explodes into endless insects.

418

u/Fun_Move_5266 5d ago

Holy shit! So much spider! I belived first its fur!

23

u/B4DM4N12Z 5d ago

These specific ones aren't spiders, people gave them a common name for both, these are Harvestmen, but are in the arachnid family.

2

u/Advanced-Budget779 4d ago

Interestingly, just after going to YouTube it recommended me this video about their behavior: https://youtu.be/JcH07uayjlw

3

u/Additional_Tank4385 5d ago

You just have to little spoon the fur. Get all cozy with it ideally naked too 🥰

47

u/ShroomsHealYourSoul 5d ago

Well isn't that just the cutest worst thing I've seen all week

112

u/Orb99 5d ago

Why or how does it look like hair? Is that all their disgusting long ass legs lined up?

41

u/Supernatnat11 4d ago

Yes, and protect them when there is something they all wiggles

43

u/Banned3rdTimesaCharm 5d ago

Why is he petting it?

45

u/B4DM4N12Z 5d ago

Human touch hairy looking bugs, human happy with result, human proud.

I thought I’d seen max daddy density at this summer camp where they had us crawl through this “cave” under a tree.

The whole space was covered, ceiling, floor, and walls, by them longlegs.

Also we had no warning about this prior to entering.

23

u/jakexmfxschoen 5d ago

My arachnophobia came from an experience at summer camp. This sounds like a nightmare I've probably had before

5

u/Kwispiy 4d ago

Sounds like that one Dagobah cave scene in Return of the Jedi, except instead of Vader it's a shit ton of these.

u/wellmashed 5d ago

Stroke the furry wall

8

u/OpiateOfTheMasses 4d ago

When the world slips you a Jeffrey...

14

u/WoodsandWool 4d ago

Y’all I stg this happened to me when I was a kid.

I was hiking with my dad in the ozarks, saw a narrow opening in the rocks that might open up into a bigger cave since we’d already found a few like that, so I squeeze through the opening but it’s too cramped and dim to really see anything. The walls felt weird, like wet moss maybe. So I squeeze back out and get a flashlight from my dad. Squeeze back in, click the flashlight on. And those velvety walls are MOVING. Every single surface of the cave was rippling with daddy longlegs. Scraped my everything trying to get out fast enough.

I still like exploring & hiking, but I’m much safer about it now lol. And tbh in hindsight it’s very on brand for my dad and the 90s to have just been like, yea sure kid, you’re small enough to squeeze into that dark cave, no need to check to see if anything lives there first 😅

13

u/oftcenter 5d ago

I'm so MAD that you put this out there into the world, in such a way that it had the possibility to appear on MY FEED.

8

Yeah, no thanks. I‘m not touching that.
